Quantifying the Memorization-to-Generalization Transition: Scaling Laws and Phase Structure in Grokking

Neural networks trained past memorization frequently undergo a delayed transition to generalization, a phenomenon known as grokking. Despite theoretical progress on \emph{why} this transition occurs, the quantitative structure of \emph{when} it occurs in hyperparameter space remains uncharacterized. We map the memorization-to-generalization boundary across 384 configurations of two-hidden-layer MLPs on modular arithmetic, fitting a power-law scaling relation for generalization onset time: $T_{\mathrm{grok}} \propto H^{-0.27}\, D^{-2.04}\, \eta^{-0.50}\, \lambda^{-0.64}$ ($R^2 = 0.732$; $0.821$ with interactions). The exponent hierarchy reveals that data complexity ($D^{-2.04}$) is the dominant driver of regime transition, not model capacity ($H^{-0.27}$): doubling data accelerates generalization by ${\sim}4\times$, while doubling width yields only ${\sim}1.2\times$. A sharp phase boundary at weight decay $\lambda \gtrsim 1.0$ separates grokking from non-grokking configurations, and weight norm trajectories show monotonic compression during the transition, consistent with implicit regularization selecting low-complexity solutions. These results provide a quantitative foundation for predicting and controlling regime transitions in overparameterized networks.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Large Language Models in Detecting Fake News: A Comparative Analysis

In an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, the detection of fake news is crucial, especially in contexts like election seasons where misinformation can have significant societal impacts. This study evaluates the effectiveness of various LLMs in identifying and filtering fake news content. Utilizing a comparative analysis approach, we tested four large LLMs -- GPT-4, Claude 3 Sonnet, Gemini Pro 1.0, and Mistral Large -- and two smaller LLMs -- Gemma 7B and Mistral 7B. By using fake news dataset samples from Kaggle, this research not only sheds light on the current capabilities and limitations of LLMs in fake news detection but also discusses the implications for developers and policymakers in enhancing AI-driven informational integrity.

Innovations in Agricultural Forecasting: A Multivariate Regression Study on Global Crop Yield Prediction

The prediction of crop yields internationally is a crucial objective in agricultural research. Thus, this study implements 6 regression models (Linear, Tree, Gradient Descent, Gradient Boosting, K Nearest Neighbors, and Random Forest) to predict crop yields in 37 developing countries over 27 years. Given 4 key training parameters, insecticides (tonnes), rainfall (mm), temperature (Celsius), and yield (hg/ha), it was found that our Random Forest Regression model achieved a determination coefficient (r2) of 0.94, with a margin of error (ME) of .03. The models were trained and tested using the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations data, along with the World Bank Climate Change Data Catalog. Furthermore, each parameter was analyzed to understand how varying factors could impact overall yield. We used unconventional models, contrary to generally used Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) models, combined with recently collected data to implement a unique approach in our research. Existing scholarship would benefit from understanding the most optimal model for agricultural research, specifically using the United Nations data.
