Interaction-free measurement of multiple objects using a universal integrated photonic processor

The phenomenon of interaction-free measurement (IFM) enables the probabilistic detection of an absorbing object with reduced photon absorption. We report the experimental implementation of a generalized IFM of multiple objects using a single quantum probe on the cloud-based Ascella photonic processor developed by Quandela. We demonstrate sequential IFM of up to 5 emulated absorbers using a single photon, significantly extending the original IFM scheme for a single object. The experimental error-mitigated results confirm the theoretical predictions for this sequential IFM setup, and demonstrate a practical approach to scaling IFM to more complex quantum interrogation tasks.

A Physically-Informed Subgraph Isomorphism Approach to Molecular Docking Using Quantum Annealers

Molecular docking is a crucial step in the development of new drugs as it guides the positioning of a small molecule (ligand) within the pocket of a target protein. In the literature, a feasibility study explored the potential of D-Wave quantum annealers for purely geometric molecular docking, neglecting physicochemical interactions between the protein and the ligand and focusing solely on their simplified geometries. To achieve this, the ligands were represented as graphs incorporating their geometric properties and then mapped onto a grid that discretized the three-dimensional space of the protein pocket. The quality of the ligand pose on the protein pocket was evaluated through the isomorphism between the ligand graph and the spatial grid. This paper builds on the previous study by introducing physicochemical interactions between the protein-ligand pair into the QUBO problem to improve the accuracy of the docking results. This paper presents a novel QUBO formulation that includes Coulomb and van der Waals forces, together with components representing H-bond and hydrophobic interactions. We integrate these physical interactions as corrective terms to the previous purely geometric QUBO formulation, and provide experimental results using the D-Wave quantum annealers to demonstrate their impact on the accuracy of the docking results.

Optimal distillation of photonic indistinguishability

Imperfect photons' indistinguishability limits the performance of photonic quantum communication and computation . Distillation protocols, inspired by entanglement purification, enhance photons' indistinguishability by leveraging quantum interference in linear optical circuits. In this work, we present a three-photon distillation protocol optimized to achieve the maximum visibility gain, which requires consideration of multi-photon effects such as collective photonic phases. We employ interferometers with the minimum number of modes, optimizing also over the protocol's success probability. The developed protocol is experimentally validated with a platform featuring a demultiplexed quantum dot source interfaced with a programmable eight-mode laser-written integrated photonic processor. We achieve indistinguishability distillation with limited photonic resources and for several multi-photon distinguishability scenarios. This work helps to strengthen the role of distillation as a practical tool for photon-based quantum technologies.

Experimental validation of boson sampling using detector binning

We experimentally demonstrate a testing strategy for boson samplers that is based on efficiently computable expressions for the output photon counting distributions binned over multiple optical modes. We apply this method to validate boson sampling experiments with three photons on a reconfigurable photonic chip, which implements a four-mode interferometer, analyzing 50 Haar-random unitary transformations while tuning photon distinguishability via controlled delays. We show that for high values of indistinguishability, the experiment accurately reproduces the ideal boson sampling binned-mode distributions, which exhibit variations that depend both on the specific interferometer implemented as well as the choice of bin, confirming the usefulness of the method to diagnose imperfections such as partial distinguishability or imperfect chip control. Finally, we analyze the behavior of Haar-averaged binned-mode distributions with partial distinguishability and demonstrate analytically that its variance is proportional to the average of the square of the photons' indistinguishability parameter. These findings highlight the central role of binning in boson sampling validation, offering a scalable and efficient framework for assessing multiphoton interference and experimental performance.

Coherence and contextuality in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer

We analyse nonclassical resources in interference phenomena using generalized noncontextuality inequalities and basis-independent coherence witnesses. We use recently proposed inequalities that witness both resources within the same framework. We also propose, in view of previous contextual advantage results, a systematic way of applying these tools to characterize advantage provided by coherence and contextuality in quantum information protocols. We instantiate this methodology for the task of quantum interrogation, famously introduced by the paradigmatic bomb-testing interferometric experiment, showing contextual quantum advantage for such a task.

Experimental certification of contextuality, coherence and dimension in a programmable universal photonic processor

Quantum superposition of high-dimensional states enables both computational speed-up and security in cryptographic protocols. However, the exponential complexity of tomographic processes makes certification of these properties a challenging task. In this work, we experimentally certify coherence witnesses tailored for quantum systems of increasing dimension, using pairwise overlap measurements enabled by a six-mode universal photonic processor fabricated with a femtosecond laser writing technology. In particular, we show the effectiveness of the proposed coherence and dimension witnesses for qudits of dimensions up to 5. We also demonstrate advantage in a quantum interrogation task, and show it is fueled by quantum contextuality. Our experimental results testify to the efficiency of this novel approach for the certification of quantum properties in programmable integrated photonic platforms

Reconfigurable continuously-coupled 3D photonic circuit for Boson Sampling experiments

Boson Sampling is a computational paradigm representing one of the most viable and pursued approaches to demonstrate the regime of quantum advantage. Recent results have demonstrated significant technological leaps in single-photon generation and detection, leading to progressively larger experimental instances of Boson Sampling experiments in different photonic systems. However, a crucial requirement for a fully-fledged platform solving this problem is the capability of implementing large-scale interferometers, that must simultaneously exhibit low losses, high degree of reconfigurability and the realization of arbitrary transformations. In this work, we move a step forward in this direction by demonstrating the adoption of a compact and reconfigurable 3D-integrated platform for photonic Boson Sampling. We perform 3- and 4-photon experiments by using such platform, showing the possibility of programming the circuit to implement a large number of unitary transformations. These results show that such compact and highly-reconfigurable layout can be scaled up to experiments with larger number of photons and modes, and can provide a viable direction for hybrid computing with photonic processors.
