Optimization of two-photon excitation by indistinguishable photons in a three-level atom

We investigate the excitation of a three-level ladder-type atom by a unidirectional field with a pair of indistinguishable photons. Starting from an analytical expression for the two-photon absorption probability, we determine the two-photon state that maximizes the population of the upper atomic state at a chosen time and show that in the limit of an infinitely long pulse, perfect excitation is possible. The optimal state is identified as the time-reversed counterpart of the two-photon state emitted in spontaneous cascade decay. We then compare this ideal excitation strategy with experimentally accessible families of states, including symmetrized Gaussian product states, temporally correlated Gaussian states, and coherent pulses. We analyze how the optimal excitation conditions depend on the ratio of atomic decay rates and on the separation of the atomic transition frequencies. For indistinguishable photons, quantum interference may shift the maxima of the marginal spectral distribution away from the atomic resonances and qualitatively modify the optimal excitation strategy. Our results clarify the role of indistinguishability and correlations in two-photon absorption and provide guidance for designing realistic excitation schemes in quantum-optical light-matter interfaces.

Optimization of two-photon absorption for three-level atom

This work discusses the problem of optimal excitation of a three-level atom of ladder-configuration by light in the two-photon state and coherent light carrying an average of two photons. The applied atom-light interaction model is based on the Wigner-Weisskopf approximation. We characterize the properties of the optimal two-photon state that excites an atom perfectly, i.e. with probability equal to one: We find that the spectro-temporal shape of the optimal state of light is determined by the lifetimes of the atomic states, with the degree of photonic entanglement in the optimal state depends on the lifetime ratio. In consequence, two distinct interaction regimes can be identified in which the entanglement of the input state of light has qualitatively different impact. As the optimal states may be challenging to prepare in general, we compare the results with those obtained for photon pairs of selected experimentally-relevant pulse shapes. As these shapes are optimized for maximal atomic excitation probability, the results can be interpreted in terms of the overlap between the optimal and investigated pulse shapes.

Stochastic approach to evolution of a quantum system interacting with a wave packet in squeezed number state

We determine filtering and master equations for a quantum system interacting with wave packet of light in a continuous-mode squeezed number state. We formulate the problem of conditional evolution of a quantum system making use of model of repeated interactions and measurements. In this approach the quantum system undergoes a sequence of interactions with an environment defined by a chain of harmonic oscillators. We assume that the environment is prepared in an entangled state being a discrete analogue of a continuous-mode number state. We present a derivation of a discrete stochastic dynamics that depends on the results of measurement performed on the field after its interaction with the system. In this paper we consider a photon counting measurement scheme. By taking a continuous time limit, we finally obtain differential stochastic equations for the system. Analytical formulae for quantum trajectories and exclusive probability densities that allow to fully characterize the statistics of photons in the output field are given.

Photon counting probabilities of the output field for a single-photon input

We derive photon counting statistics for an output field of a single-photon wave packet interacting with a quantum system (e.g. a quantum harmonic oscillator or a two-level atom). We determine the exclusive probability densities for the output field by making use of quantum filtering theory. The quantum trajectories for continuous in time measurements of the output field (reflected and transmitted), are determined starting from a collision model and difference filtering equations. We provide analytical formulae for quantum trajectories associated with a two-dimensional stochastic counting process, we describe their structure, and give a physical interpretation to them. Moreover, we provide analytical expressions for probability densities for the times of successive photon detections for a single-photon field scattered on a two-level atom, for an arbitrary photon profile and any initial state of the atom.

Eternally non-Markovian dynamics of a qubit interacting with a single-photon wavepacket

An evolution of a two-level system (qubit) interacting with a single-photon wave packet is analyzed. It is shown that a hierarchy of master equations gives rise to phase covariant qubit evolution. The temporal correlations in the input field induce nontrivial memory effects for the evolution of a qubit. It is shown that in the resonant case whenever time-local generator is regular (does not display singularities) the qubit evolution never displays information backflow. However, in general the generator might be highly singular leading to intricate non-Markovian effects. A detailed analysis of the exponential profile is provided which allows to illustrate all characteristic feature of the qubit evolution.

Quantum trajectories for a system interacting with environment in N-photon state

We derive stochastic master equation for a quantum system interacting with an environment prepared in a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. To determine the conditional evolution of the quantum system depending on continuous in time measurements of the output field the model of repeated interactions and measurements is applied. The environment is defined as an infinite chain of harmonic oscillators which do not interact between themselves and they are prepared initially in an entangled state being a discrete analogue of a continuous-mode $N$-photon state. We provide not only the quantum trajectories but also the analytical formulae for the whole statistics of the output photons and the solution to the master equation. The solution in the continuous case is represented by a simple diagrammatic technique with very transparent "Feynmann rules". This technique considerably simplifies the structure of the solution and enables one to find physical interpretation for the solution in terms of a few elementary processes.

Quantum Trajectories for Squeezed Input Processes: Explicit Solutions

We consider the quantum (trajectories) filtering equation for the case when the system is driven by Bose field inputs prepared in an arbitrary non-zero mean Gaussian state. The a posteriori evolution of the system is conditioned by the results of a single or double homodyne measurements. The system interacting with the Bose field is a single cavity mode taken initially in a Gaussian state. We show explicit solutions using the method of characteristic functions to the filtering equations exploiting the linear Gaussian nature of the problem.
