Quantum Fisher Information and the Curvature of Entanglement

We explore the relationship between quantum Fisher information (QFI) and the negative of the second derivative of concurrence with respect to the coupling between two qubits, referred to as the curvature of entanglement (CoE). The two-qubit system serves as a minimal model to study the connection between QFI and dynamically generated entanglement in scenarios where the measured quantity is a two- or many-body coupling strength. We analyze in detail the pure-state lossless case for which general results can be inferred and we also consider a simple interaction Hamiltonian in the case of one form of loss applied to the qubits. For a two-qubit quantum probe used to estimate the coupling constant appearing in the interaction Hamiltonian we show, for certain initial conditions, that there are times such that CoE = QFI. These times can be associated with the concurrence, viewed as a function of the coupling parameter, being a maximum. We examine the time evolution of the concurrence of the eigenstates of the symmetric logarithmic derivative (SLD). Measurements using the SLD eigenstates as basis are optimal for saturating the quantum Cramer bound. We show that, for several families of initially separable and initially entangled states, the SLD eigenstates are simple product states when CoE = QFI.

Fault Tolerant Quantum Error Mitigation

Typically, fault-tolerant operations and code concatenation are reserved for quantum error correction due to their resource overhead. Here, we show that fault tolerant operations have a large impact on the performance of symmetry based error mitigation techniques. We also demonstrate that similar to results in fault tolerant quantum computing, code concatenation in fault-tolerant quantum error mitigation (FTQEM) can exponentially suppress the errors to arbitrary levels. For a family of circuits, we provide analytical error thresholds for FTQEM with the repetition code. These circuits include a set of quantum circuits that can generate all of reversible classical computing. The post-selection rate in FTQEM can also be increased by correcting some of the outcomes. Our threshold results can also be viewed from the perspective of quantifying the number of gate operations we can delay checking the stabilizers in a concatenated code before errors overwhelm the encoding. The benefits of FTQEM are demonstrated with numerical simulations and hardware demonstrations.

Finding good quantum codes using the Cartan form

We present a simple and fast numerical procedure to search for good quantum codes for storing logical qubits in the presence of independent per-qubit noise. In a key departure from past work, we use the worst-case fidelity as the figure of merit for quantifying code performance, a much better indicator of code quality than, say, entanglement fidelity. Yet, our algorithm does not suffer from inefficiencies usually associated with the use of worst-case fidelity. Specifically, using a near-optimal recovery map, we are able to reduce the triple numerical optimization needed for the search to a single optimization over the encoding map. We can further reduce the search space using the Cartan decomposition, focusing our search over the nonlocal degrees of freedom resilient against independent per-qubit noise, while not suffering much in code performance.
