CEM-TUDASR: Computationally efficient multi-modality transformer based unsupervised domain adaptive super-resolution approach

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) enables non-invasive visualization of the gastrointestinal tract, but its miniaturized optics, sensor limitations, and wireless transmission constraints result in low-resolution images with reduced visibility of diagnostically important structures. This paper proposes CEM-TUDASR, a computationally efficient unsupervised Transformer-based super-resolution framework for WCE image enhancement without paired low-resolution (LR) and high-resolution (HR) training data. A domain-adaptive degradation network synthesizes realistic WCE-like LR images from HR conventional endoscopy images, reducing the domain gap and enabling effective unpaired learning. The SR generator integrates Deep Attention Blocks (DABs) and a Fusion Attention Block (FAB) to capture long-range contextual dependencies and fine local structures while preserving perceptual and structural fidelity. The model is trained on a curated dataset derived from Kvasir Capsule and evaluated on KID and GIANA for cross-dataset generalization. No-reference quality metrics, including BRISQUE, PIQE, NIQE, and the domain-specific EndoQM, show that CEM-TUDASR consistently outperforms existing unsupervised SR methods. Qualitative results further demonstrate improved restoration of mucosal textures, vascular patterns, and clinically relevant anatomical details. Cross-domain experiments on retinal images additionally demonstrate the adaptability of the framework. With only 2.67 million parameters and 169.94 GFLOPs, CEM-TUDASR achieves high-quality reconstruction while maintaining computational efficiency, making it suitable for resource-constrained clinical and embedded endoscopic applications.

UnCapsTSR: An Unsupervised Transformer-based Image Super-Resolution Approach for Capsule Endoscopy Images

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) captures and streams video while passing through a patient's Gastrointestinal (GI) tract and is used to examine its irregularities. Although advantageous over conventional endoscopy, WCE suffers from limitations related to capsule size and wireless transmission, resulting in images with coarser resolution. This work presents UnCapsTSR, an unsupervised transformer-based Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) framework for improving the spatial resolution of Low-Resolution (LR) WCE images. The proposed method accomplishes SR without explicit degradation estimation of real-world LR data and eliminates the need for true LR-HR pairs. UnCapsTSR employs a Bilateral Total Variation (BTV) loss to ensure spatial continuity in SR images. A newly curated dataset from the Kvasir Capsule dataset is also presented for training WCE SR models. Generalizability is validated on KID and GIANA datasets that are not used during training. A new non-reference metric, Endoscopy Quality Metric (EndoQM), is introduced for quantitative evaluation of domain-specific WCE data. Experiments demonstrate consistent improvement over state-of-the-art unsupervised SR approaches using NIQE, BRISQUE, PIQE, and EndoQM. Statistical evaluation shows 40 to 80 percent improvement in EndoQM from LR to SR across the evaluated datasets.

NTIRE 2024 Challenge on Image Super-Resolution (x4): Methods and Results

This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 challenge on image super-resolution ($\times$4), highlighting the solutions proposed and the outcomes obtained. The challenge involves generating corresponding high-resolution (HR) images, magnified by a factor of four, from low-resolution (LR) inputs using prior information. The LR images originate from bicubic downsampling degradation. The aim of the challenge is to obtain designs/solutions with the most advanced SR performance, with no constraints on computational resources (e.g., model size and FLOPs) or training data. The track of this challenge assesses performance with the PSNR metric on the DIV2K testing dataset. The competition attracted 199 registrants, with 20 teams submitting valid entries. This collective endeavour not only pushes the boundaries of performance in single-image SR but also offers a comprehensive overview of current trends in this field.

NTIRE 2025 Challenge on Image Super-Resolution (x4): Methods and Results

This paper presents the NTIRE 2025 image super-resolution ($\times$4) challenge, one of the associated competitions of the 10th NTIRE Workshop at CVPR 2025. The challenge aims to recover high-resolution (HR) images from low-resolution (LR) counterparts generated through bicubic downsampling with a $\times$4 scaling factor. The objective is to develop effective network designs or solutions that achieve state-of-the-art SR performance. To reflect the dual objectives of image SR research, the challenge includes two sub-tracks: (1) a restoration track, emphasizes pixel-wise accuracy and ranks submissions based on PSNR; (2) a perceptual track, focuses on visual realism and ranks results by a perceptual score. A total of 286 participants registered for the competition, with 25 teams submitting valid entries. This report summarizes the challenge design, datasets, evaluation protocol, the main results, and methods of each team. The challenge serves as a benchmark to advance the state of the art and foster progress in image SR.

Learned Smartphone ISP on Mobile NPUs with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

As the quality of mobile cameras starts to play a crucial role in modern smartphones, more and more attention is now being paid to ISP algorithms used to improve various perceptual aspects of mobile photos. In this Mobile AI challenge, the target was to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image signal processing (ISP) pipeline that can replace classical hand-crafted ISPs and achieve nearly real-time performance on smartphone NPUs. For this, the participants were provided with a novel learned ISP dataset consisting of RAW-RGB image pairs captured with the Sony IMX586 Quad Bayer mobile sensor and a professional 102-megapixel medium format camera. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ platform with a dedicated AI processing unit capable of accelerating both floating-point and quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU and are capable of processing Full HD photos under 60-100 milliseconds while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in this challenge is provided in this paper.
