Non-vanishing $U_{e3}$ and $\cos{2 θ_{23}}$ from a broken $Z_2$ symmetry

It is shown that the neutrino mass matrices in the flavour basis yielding a vanishing $U_{e3}$ are characterized by invariance under a class of $Z_2$ symmetries. A specific $Z_2$ in this class also leads to a maximal atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$. The breaking of that $Z_2$ can be parameterized by two dimensionless quantities, $\e$ and $\e'$; the effects of $\e, \e' \neq 0$ are studied perturbatively and numerically. The induced value of $\ue3$ strongly depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. We find that $\ue3$ is less than 0.07 for a normal mass hierarchy, even when $\e, \e' \sim 30 %$. For an inverted mass hierarchy $\ue3$ tends to be around 0.1 but can be as large as 0.17. In the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, $\ue3$ could be close to its experimental upper bound 0.2. In contrast, $| \cos{2θ_{23}} |$ can always reach its experimental upper bound 0.28. We propose a specific model, based on electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM, for $\e$ and $\e'$. In that model, both $\ue3$ and $| \cos{2 θ_{23}} |$, could be close to their respective experimental upper bounds if neutrinos are quasi-degenerate.

Summary of Model Predictions for $U_{e3}$

We present a short discussion on the expected magnitude of $|U_{e3}|$ in the context of various scenarios proposed to describe neutrino masses and mixing. Generic expectation is relatively large ($>0.05$) values for $\ue3$ which occur in many well-motivated theoretical scenarios and models.

Constraints on flavour-dependent long-range forces from atmospheric neutrino observations at Super-Kamiokande

In the minimal standard model it is possible to gauge any one of the following global symmetries in an anomaly free way: (i)$L_{e}-L_μ$, (ii) $L_{e}-L_τ$ or (iii) $L_μ-L_τ$. If the gauge boson corresponding to (i) or (ii) is (nearly) massless then it will show up as a long range composition dependent fifth force between macroscopic objects. Such a force will also influence neutrino oscillations due to its flavour-dependence. We show that the latter effect is quite significant in spite of very strong constraints on the relevant gauge couplings from the fifth force experiments. In particular, the $L_{e}- L_{μ,τ}$ potential of the electrons in the Sun and the earth is shown to suppress the atmospheric neutrino $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ oscillations which have been observed at Super-Kamiokande. The Super-K data of oscillation of multi-GeV atmospheric neutrinos can be used to put an upper bound on coupling $α_{eτ}< 6.4 \times 10^{-52}$ and $α_{eμ}< 5.5 \times 10^{-52}$at 90% CL when the range of the force is the earth-sun distance. This is an improvement by two orders on the earlier fifth force bounds in this range.

Implications of partially degenerate neutrinos at a high scale in the light of KamLAND and WMAP

Electroweak radiative corrections can generate the neutrino (mass)$^2$ difference required for the large mixing angle solution (LMA) to the solar neutrino problem if two of the neutrinos are assumed degenerate at high energy. We test this possibility with the existing experimental knowledge of the low energy neutrino mass and mixing parameters. We derive restrictions on ranges of the high scale mixing matrix elements and obtain predictions for the low energy parameters required in order to get the LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem picked out by KamLAND. We find that in the case of standard model this is achieved only when the (degenerate) neutrino masses lie in the range $(0.7-2) \eV$ which is at odds with the cosmological limit $m_ν<0.23 \eV$ (at $95 % C.L$) established recently using WMAP results. Thus SM radiative corrections cannot easily generate the LMA solution in this scenario. However, the LMA solution is possible in case of the MSSM electroweak corrections with (almost) degenerate spectrum or with inverted mass hierarchy for limited ranges in the high scale parameters.

Radiatively Generated $ν_e$ Oscillations: General Analysis, Textures and Models

We study the consequences of assuming that the mass scale $Δ_{odot}$ corresponding to the solar neutrino oscillations and mixing angle $U_{e3}$ corresponding to the electron neutrino oscillation at CHOOZ are radiatively generated through the standard electroweak gauge interactions. All the leptonic mass matrices having zero $Δ_{odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ at a high scale lead to a unique low energy value for the $Δ_{odot}$ which is determined by the (known) size of the radiative corrections, solar and the atmospheric mixing angle and the Majorana mass of the neutrino observed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This prediction leads to the following consequences: ($i$) The MSSM radiative corrections generate only the dark side of the solar neutrino solutions. ($ii$) The inverted mass hierarchy ($m,-m,0$) at the high scale fails in generating the LMA solution but it can lead to the LOW or vacuum solutions. ($iii$) The $Δ_{odot}$ generated in models with maximal solar mixing at a high scale is zero to the lowest order in the radiative parameter. It tends to get suppressed as a result of this and lies in the vacuum region. We discuss specific textures which can lead to the LMA solution in the present framework and provide a gauge theoretical realization of this in the context of the seesaw model.

Predictive Framework with a Pair of Degenerate Neutrinos at a high scale

Radiative generation of the solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ is discussed in the presence of leptonic CP violation. We assume that both the solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are zero at a high scale and the weak radiative corrections generate them. It is shown that all leptonic mass matrices satisfying these requirements lead to a unique prediction $Δ_{\odot} \cos 2θ_{\odot}\approx 4 δ_τ\sin^2 θ_A |m_{ee}|^2$ for the solar scale in terms of the radiative correction parameter $δ_τ$, the physical solar (atmospheric) mixing angles $θ_{odot} (θ_A)$ and the Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This relation is independent of the mixing matrix and CP-violating phases at the high scale. The presence of CP-violating phases leads to dilution in the solar mixing angle defined at the high scale. Because of this, bi-maximal mixing pattern at the high energy leads to large but non-maximal solar mixing in the low-energy theory. An illustrative model with this feature is discussed.

Radiative origin of solar scale and U_{e3}

We make a general study of possibility of generating solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ and the CHOOZ angle $U_{e3}$ radiatively by assuming that they are zero at some high scale. The most general neutrino mass matrix leading to this result is determined in a CP conserving theory. This matrix contains four independent parameters which can be fixed in terms of physical observables. The standard weak radiative corrections then lead to non-zero $Δ_{\odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ without drastically altering the other tree level results. As a consequence, both $Δ_{\odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ are predicted in terms of other physically observable parameters. These predictions are insensitive to specific form of the neutrino mass matrix. The solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are strongly correlated with the effective neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. In particular, the LMA solution to the solar neutrino problem arise for $m_{ee}$ close to the present experimental limit. An example of specific texture is presented which predicts maximal atmospheric mixing and $\tan^2 θ_{\odot}\approx 0.5$ for the solar mixing angle $θ_{\odot}$.

Bi-maximal mixing and Bilinear R violation

We perform a general analytic study of feasibility of obtaining a combined explanation for the deficits in the solar and the atmospheric neutrino fluxes with two large mixing angles in supersymmetric model with bilinear R parity violations. The required hierarchy among the solar and atmospheric neutrino mass scales follows in this framework in the presence of an approximate Higgs - slepton universality at the weak scale. The solar mixing angle is shown to be related to non-universality in slepton mass terms specifically to differences in soft parameters of the first two leptonic generations. It is shown that this flavour universality violation should be as strong as the Higgs-slepton universality violation if solar neutrino mixing angle is to be large. The standard supergravity models with universal boundary conditions at a high scale lead to the required Higgs-slepton universality violations but the predicted violation of flavour universality among the first two generations is much smaller than required. This model therefore cannot provide an explanation of large solar neutrino mixing angle unless some universality violations in soft supersymmetry breaking parameters are introduced at a high scale itself.

Bounds on neutrino magnetic moment tensor from solar neutrinos

Solar neutrinos with non-zero magnetic moments will contribute to the electron scattering rates in the Super-Kamiokande experiment. The magnetic moment scattering events in Super-K can be accommodated in the standard VO or MSW solutions by a change of the parameter space of mass square difference and mixing angle-but the shifted neutrino parameters obtained from Super-K will (for some values of neutrino magnetic moments) become incompatible with the fits from SNO, Gallium and Chlorine experiments. We compute the upper bounds on the Dirac and Majorana magnetic moments of solar neutrinos by simultaneously fitting all the observed solar neutrino rates. The bounds the magnetic moment matrix elements are of the order of 10^{-10} Bohr magnetron.

Constraints on decay plus oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem

We examine the constraints on non-radiative decay of neutrinos from the observations of solar neutrino experiments. The standard oscillation hypothesis among three neutrinos solves the solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. Decay of a massive neutrino mixed with the electron neutrino results in the depletion of the solar neutrino flux. We introduce neutrino decay in the oscillation hypothesis and demand that decay does not spoil the successful explanation of solar and atmospheric observations. We obtain a lower bound on the ratio of the lifetime over the mass of $ν_2$, $(τ_2/m_2) > 22.7 (\srm/\MeV)$ for the MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem and $(τ_2/m_2) > 27.8 (\srm/\MeV)$ for the VO solution (at 99% C.L.).

A predictive scheme for neutrino masses

The solar and atmospheric data and possibly large value for the effective neutrino mass in neutrinoless double beta decay experiment together indicate that all the three neutrinos are nearly degenerate. A verifiable texture for the neutrino mass matrix is proposed to accommodate these results. This texture allows almost degenerate neutrino masses two of which are exactly degenerate at tree level. The standard model radiative corrections lift this degeneracy and account for the solar deficit. The solar scale is correlated with the effective neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The model can accommodate a large value of O(eV) for $m_{ee}$. Six observables corresponding to three neutrino masses and three mixing angles are determined in terms of only three unknown parameters within the proposed texture.

Neutrino Anomalies and Quasi-Dirac neutrinos

We discuss possibility of describing solar, atmospheric and LSND results with four neutrinos forming two quasi-degenerate pairs. The simplest versions of this 2+2 scheme with either $ν_e$ or $ν_μ$ mixing exclusively with sterile neutrino is disfavored by the SNO and atmospheric neutrino results respectively. A generalized scheme with sterile state participating in both the solar and atmospheric oscillations is still allowed. We show thasolar and atmospheric oscillations is still allowed. We show that the complex pattern of mixing needed for this purpose follows from a simple L_e+L_μ-L_τ-L_s symmetry. Specific form of L_e+L_μ-L_τ-L_s symmetric mass matrix is determined from experimental results. Two theoretical schemes which lead to this form and a proper breaking of L_e+L_μ-L_τ-L_s symmetry are discussed.

Neutrino Anomalies in Gauge Mediated Model with Trilinear R violation

The structure of neutrino masses and mixing resulting from trilinear $R$ violating interactions is studied in the presence of the gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. Neutrino masses arise in this model at tree level through the RG-induced vacuum expectation values of the sneutrinos and also through direct contribution at 1-loop. The relative importance of these contributions is determined by the values of the strong and weak coupling constants. In case of purely $λ'$ couplings, the tree contribution dominates over the 1-loop diagram. In this case, one simultaneously obtains atmospheric neutrino oscillations and quasi-vacuum oscillations of the solar neutrinos if all the $ł'$ couplings are assumed to be of similar magnitudes. If R parity violation arises from the trilinear $ł$ couplings, then the loop induced contribution dominates over the tree level. One cannot simultaneously explain the solar and atmospheric deficit in this case if all the $ł$ couplings are of similar magnitude. This however becomes possible with hierarchical $ł$ and we give a specific example of this.

Bounds on tau neutrino magnetic moment and charge radius from Super-K and SNO observations

Neutrinos can scatter electrons in water detectors through their magnetic moments and charge radii in addition to the charged and neutral currents channels. The recent solar neutrino charged current event rates announced by SNO with the earlier solar and atmospheric neutrino observations from Super-Kamiokande allows us to put upper bounds of $μ<10^{-9} μ_B$ on neutrino magnetic moments and $ < 10^{-31} cm^2$ on the neutrino charge radii. For the electron and muon neutrinos these bounds are comparable with existing bounds but for tau neutrinos these bounds are three orders of magnitude more stringent than earlier terrestrial bounds. These bounds are independent of any specific model of neutrino oscillations.

Neutrino anomalies and large extra dimensions

Theories with large extra dimensions can generate small neutrino masses when the standard model neutrinos are coupled to singlet fermions propagating in higher dimensions. The couplings can also generate mass splittings and mixings among the flavour neutrinos in the brane. We systematically study the minimal scenario involving only one singlet bulk fermion coupling weakly to the flavour neutrinos. We explore the neutrino mass structures in the brane that can potentially account for the atmospheric, solar and LSND anomalies simultaneously in a natural way. We demonstrate that in the absence of a priori mixings among the SM neutrinos, it is not possible to reconcile all these anomalies. The presence of some structure in the mass matrix of the SM neutrinos can solve this problem. This is exemplified by the Zee model, which when embedded in extra dimensions in a minimal way can account for all the neutrino anomalies.

No-go for exactly degenerate neutrinos at high scale?

We show in a model independent manner that, if the magnitudes of Majorana masses of neutrinos are exactly equal at some high scale, the radiative corrections cannot reproduce the observed masses and mixing spectrum at the low scale, irrespective of the Majorana phases or the mixing angles at the high scale.

Phenomenology of Pseudo Dirac Neutrinos

We formulate general conditions on $3\times 3$ neutrino mass matrices under which a degenerate pair of neutrinos at a high scale would split at low scale by radiative corrections involving only the standard model fields. This generalizes the original observations of Wolfenstein on pseudo Dirac neutrinos to three generations. A specific model involving partially broken discrete symmetry and solving the solar and atmospheric anomalies is proposed. The symmetry pattern of the model naturally generates two large angles one of which can account for the large angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem.

U(1) symmetry and R parity violation

The patterns of $R$ violation resulting from imposition of a gauged U(1) horizontal symmetry on the minimal supersymmetric standard model are systematically analyzed. We concentrate on class of models with integer U(1) charges chosen to reproduce the quark masses and mixings as well as charged lepton masses exactly or approximately. The U(1) charges are further restricted by the requirement that very large bilinear lepton number violating terms should not be allowed in the superpotential. It is shown that this leads to severely constrained patterns of trilinear interactions. Specifically, only choice compatible with phenomenological restrictions is the one in which all the trilinear $λ'_{ijk}$ and all but at most two trilinear $λ_{ijk}$ couplings vanish or are enormously suppressed. The U(1) symmetry can allow effective generation of bilinear lepton number violating parameters through terms in the Kahler potential. Resulting models are identified and structure of neutrino masses in some of these is briefly discussed.
