Convergence and error analysis for pure collisional breakage equation

Collisional breakage in the particulate process has a lot of recent curiosity. We study the pure collisional breakage equation which is nonlinear in nature accompanied by locally bounded breakage kernel and collision kernel. The continuous equation is discretized using a finite volume scheme (FVS) and the weak convergence of the approximated solution towards the exact solution is analyzed for non-uniform mesh. The idea of the analysis is based on the weak $L^1$ compactness and a suitable stable condition on time step is introduced. Furthermore, theoretical error analysis is developed for a uniform mesh when kernels are taken in $W_{loc}^{1,\infty}$ space. The scheme is shown to be first-order convergent which is verified numerically for three test examples of the kernels.

Numerical analysis for coagulation-fragmentation equations with singular rates

This article deals with the convergence of finite volume scheme (FVS) for solving coagulation and multiple fragmentation equations having locally bounded coagulation kernel but singularity near the origin due to fragmentation rates. Thanks to the Dunford-Pettis and De La Vall$\acute{e}$e-Poussin theorems which allow us to have the convergence of numerically truncated solution towards a weak solution of the continuous model using a weak $L^1$ compactness argument. A suitable stable condition on time step is taken to achieve the result. Furthermore, when kernels are in $W^{1,\infty}_{loc}$ space, first order error approximation is demonstrated for a uniform mesh. It is numerically validated by attempting several test problems.

Global existence to the discrete Safronov-Dubovskiǐ coagulation equations and failure of mass-conservation

This paper presents the existence of global solutions to the discrete Safronov-Dubvoskiǐ coagulation equations for a large class of coagulation kernels satisfying $Λ_{i,j} = θ_i θ_j + κ_{i,j}$ with $κ_{i,j} \leq Aθ_i θ_j, \ \ \forall \ \ i,j\ge 1$ where the sequence $(θ_i)_{i\geq 1}$ grows linearly or superlinearly with respect to $i$. Moreover, the failure of mass-conservation of the solution is also addressed which confirms the occurrence of the gelation phenomenon.

Instantaneous gelation and nonexistence for the Oort-Hulst-Safronov coagulation model

The possible occurrence of instantaneous gelation to Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for a certain class of unbounded coagulation kernels. The existence of instantaneous gelation is confirmed by showing the nonexistence of mass-conserving weak solutions. Finally, it is shown that for such kernels, there is no weak solution to the OHS coagulation equation at any time interval.

Weak Solutions to the Collision-Induced Breakage Equation with Dominating Coagulation

Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the collision-induced breakage and coag-ulation equation are shown when coagulation is the dominant mechanism for small volumes. The collision kernel may feature a stronger singularity for small volumes than the ones considered in previous contributions. In addition, when the collision kernel is locally bounded, the class of fragment daughter distribution functions included in the analysis is broader. Mass-conserving solutions are also constructed when the collision kernel grows at most linearly at infinity and are proved to be unique for initial conditions decaying sufficiently fast at infinity. The existence proofs relies on a weak compactness approach in L 1 .

Existence and non-existence for the collision-induced breakage equation

A mathematical model for collision-induced breakage is considered. Existence of weak solutions to the continuous nonlinear collision-induced breakage equation is shown for a large class of unbounded collision kernels and daughter distribution functions, assuming the collision kernel $K$ to be given by $K(x,y)= x^α y^β + x^β y^α$ with $α\le β\le 1$. When $α+ β\in [1,2]$, it is shown that there exists at least one weak mass-conserving solution for all times. In contrast, when $α+ β\in [0,1)$ and $α\ge 0$, global mass-conserving weak solutions do not exist, though such solutions are constructed on a finite time interval depending on the initial condition. The question of uniqueness is also considered. Finally, for $α<0$ and a specific daughter distribution function, the non-existence of mass-conserving solutions is also established.

A novel two-point gradient method for Regularization of inverse problems in Banach spaces

In this paper, we introduce a novel two-point gradient method for solving the ill-posed problems in Banach spaces and study its convergence analysis. The method is based on the well known iteratively regularized Landweber iteration method together with an extrapolation strategy. The general formulation of iteratively regularized Landweber iteration method in Banach spaces excludes the use of certain functions such as total variation like penalty functionals, $L^1$ functions etc. The novel scheme presented in this paper allows to use such non-smooth penalty terms that can be helpful in practical applications involving the reconstruction of several important features of solutions such as piecewise constancy and sparsity. We carefully discuss the choices for important parameters, such as combination parameters and step sizes involved in the design of the method. Additionally, we discuss an example to validate our assumptions.

Iteratively regularized landweber iteration method: Convergence analysis via Hölder Stability

In this paper, the local convergence of Iteratively regularized Landweber iteration method is investigated for solving non-linear inverse problems in Banach spaces. Our analysis mainly relies on the assumption that the inverse mapping satisfies the Hölder stability estimate locally. We consider both noisy as well as non-noisy data in our analysis. Under the a-priori choice of stopping index for noisy data, we show that the iterates remain in a certain ball around exact solution and obtain the convergence rates. The convergence of the Iteratively regularized Landweber iterates to the exact solution is shown under certain assumptions in the case of non-noisy data and as a by-product, under different conditions, two different convergence rates are obtained.

Convergence rates for inverse Problems in Hilbert spaces: A Comparative Study

In this paper, we apply a new kind of smoothness concept, i.e. Hölder stability estimates for the determination of convergence rates of Tikhonov regularization for linear and non-linear inverse problems in Hilbert spaces. For linear inverse problems, we obtain the convergence rates without incorporating the classical concept of spectral theory and for non-linear inverse problems, we obtain the convergence rates without incorporating any additional non-linearity estimate. Further, we employ the smoothness concept of inhomogeneous variational inequalities to deduce the convergence rates for non-linear inverse problems. In addition to Tikhonov regularization, we also consider Lavrentiev's regularization method for non-linear inverse problems and determine its convergence rates by incorporating the Hölder stability estimates as well as inhomogeneous variational inequalities. And finally, we discuss the co-action between the variational inequalities and the Hölder stability estimates.

Mass-conserving weak solutions to Oort-Hulst-Safronov coagulation equation with singular rates

Existence of global weak solutions to the continuous Oort-Hulst-Safronov (OHS) coagulation equation is investigated for coagulation kernels capturing a singularity near zero and growing linearly at infinity. The proof mainly relies on a relation, between classical Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) and OHS coagulation equation, which is introduced in [16] as generalized coagulation equation. Moreover, all weak solutions formulated in a suitable sense are demonstrated to be mass-conserving. We obtain here a similar result for OHS coagulation equation as the one in [6] for SCE.

Mass-conserving weak solutions to the coagulation and collisional breakage equation with singular rates

In this article, the existence of mass-conserving solutions is investigated to the continuous coagulation and collisional breakage equation with singular coagulation kernels. Here, the probability distribution function attains singularity near the origin. The existence result is constructed by using both conservative and non-conservative truncations to the continuous coagulation and collisional breakage equation. The proof of the existence result relies on a classical weak L1 compactness method.

Weak solutions to the continuous coagulation model with collisional breakage

A global existence theorem on weak solutions is shown for the continuous coagulation equation with collisional breakage under certain classes of unbounded collision kernels and distribution functions. This model describes the dynamics of particle growth when binary collisions occur to form either a single particle via coalescence or two/more particles via breakup with possible transfer of mass. Each of these processes may take place with a suitably assigned probability depending on the volume of particles participating in the collision. The distribution function may have a possibility to attain an algebraic singularity for small volumes.

Mass-conserving solutions to the Smoluchowski coagulation equation with singular kernel

Global weak solutions to the continuous Smoluchowski coagulation equation (SCE) are constructed for coagulation kernels featuring an algebraic singularity for small volumes and growing linearly for large volumes, thereby extending previous results obtained in Norris (1999) and Cueto Camejo \& Warnecke (2015). In particular, linear growth at infinity of the coagulation kernel is included and the initial condition may have an infinite second moment. Furthermore, all weak solutions (in a suitable sense) including the ones constructed herein are shown to be mass-conserving, a property which was proved in Norris (1999) under stronger assumptions. The existence proof relies on a weak compactness method in $L^1$ and a by-product of the analysis is that both conservative and non-conservative approximations to the SCE lead to weak solutions which are then mass-conserving.

Well-posedness to the continuous coagulation processes with collision-induced multiple fragmentation

An existence result on weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with collision-induced multiple fragmentation is established for certain classes of unbounded coagulation, collision and breakup kernels. In this model, a pair of particles can coagulate into a larger one if their confrontation is a completely inelastic collision; otherwise, one of them will split into many smaller particles due to a destructive collision. In the present work, both coagulation and fragmentation processes are considered to be intrinsically nonlinear. The breakup kernel may have a possibility to attain a singularity at the origin. The proof is based on the classical weak L^1 compactness method applied to suitably chosen approximating equations. In addition, we study the uniqueness of weak solutions under additional growth conditions on collision and breakup kernels which mainly relies on the integrability of higher moments. Finally, it is obtained that the unique weak solution is mass-conserving.

In addition, it is shown that solutions are mass conserving. The coagulation and breakup kernels may have singularities on both the co-ordinate axes whereas the collision kernel grows up to bilinearity.
