Subconvexity Implies Effective Quantum Unique Ergodicity for Hecke-Maa{\ss} Cusp Forms on $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$

It is a folklore result in arithmetic quantum chaos that quantum unique ergodicity on the modular surface with an effective rate of convergence follows from subconvex bounds for certain triple product $L$-functions. The physical space manifestation of this result, namely the equidistribution of mass of Hecke-Maass cusp forms, was proven to follow from subconvexity by Watson, whereas the phase space manifestation of quantum unique ergodicity has only previously appeared in the literature for Eisenstein series via work of Jakobson. We detail the analogous phase space result for Hecke-Maass cusp forms. The proof relies on the Watson-Ichino triple product formula together with a careful analysis of certain archimedean integrals of Whittaker functions.

A New Upper Bound For the Growth Factor in Gaussian Elimination with Complete Pivoting

The growth factor in Gaussian elimination measures how large the entries of an LU factorization can be relative to the entries of the original matrix. It is a key parameter in error estimates, and one of the most fundamental topics in numerical analysis. We produce an upper bound of $n^{0.2079 \ln n +0.91}$ for the growth factor in Gaussian elimination with complete pivoting -- the first improvement upon Wilkinson's original 1961 bound of $2 \, n ^{0.25\ln n +0.5}$.

Generic Classification and Asymptotic Enumeration of Dope Matrices

For a complex polynomial $P$ of degree $n$ and an $m$-tuple of distinct complex numbers $\Lambda=(\lambda_1,\ldots,\lambda_m)$, the dope matrix $D_P(\Lambda)$ is defined as the $m \times (n+1)$ matrix $(c)_{ij}$ with $c_{ij} =1$ if $P^{(j)}(\lambda_i)=0$ and $c_{ij}=0$ otherwise. We classify the set of dope matrices when the entries of $\Lambda$ are algebraically independent, resolving a conjecture of Alon, Kravitz, and O'Bryant. We also provide asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the total number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices. For $m$ much smaller than $n$, these bounds give an asymptotic estimate of the logarithm of the number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices.

The Bernardi formula for non-transitive deformations of the braid arrangement

Bernardi has given a general formula for the number of regions of a deformation of the braid arrangement as a signed sum over boxed trees. We prove that each set of boxed trees which share an underlying (rooted labeled plane) tree contributes 0, +1, or -1 to this sum, and we give an algorithm for computing this value. For Ish-type arrangements, we further construct a sign-reversing involution which reduces Bernardi's signed sum to the enumeration of a set of (rooted labeled plane) trees. We conclude by explicitly enumerating the trees corresponding to the regions of Ish-type arrangements which are nested, recovering their known counting formula.
