On the monodromy conjecture for non-degenerate hypersurfaces

The monodromy conjecture is an umbrella term for several conjectured relationships between poles of zeta functions, monodromy eigenvalues and roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials in arithmetic geometry and singularity theory. Even the weakest of these relations -- the Denef--Loeser conjecture on topological zeta functions -- is open for surface singularities. We prove it for a wide class of multidimensional singularities that are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedra, including all such singularities of functions of four variables. A crucial difference from the known case of three variables is the existence of degenerate singularities arbitrarily close to a non-degenerate one. Thus, even aiming at the study of non-degenerate singularities, we have to go beyond this setting. We develop new tools to deal with such multidimensional phenomena, and conjecture how the proof for non-degenerate singularities of arbitrarily many variables might look like.

The holomorphy conjecture for nondegenerate surface singularities

The holomorphy conjecture states roughly that Igusa's zeta function associated to a hypersurface and a character is holomorphic on $\mathbb{C}$ whenever the order of the character does not divide the order of any eigenvalue of the local monodromy of the hypersurface. In this article we prove the holomorphy conjecture for surface singularities which are nondegenerate over $\mathbb{C}$ with respect to their Newton polyhedron. In order to provide relevant eigenvalues of monodromy, we first show a relation between the normalized volume (which appears in the formula of Varchenko for the zeta function of monodromy) of faces in a simplex in arbitrary dimension. We then study some specific character sums that show up when dealing with false poles. In contrast with the context of the trivial character, we here need to show fakeness of certain poles in addition to the candidate poles contributed by $B_1$-facets.

The monodromy conjecture for plane meromorphic germs

A notion of Milnor fibration for meromorphic functions and the corresponding concepts of monodromy and monodromy zeta function have been introduced in [GZLM1]. In this article we define the topological zeta function for meromorphic germs and we study its poles in the plane case. We show that the poles do not behave as in the holomorphic case but still do satisfy a generalization of the monodromy conjecture.

Poincaré series for filtrations defined by discrete valuations with arbitrary center

To study singularities on complex varieties we study Poincaré series of filtrations that are defined by discrete valuations on the local ring at the singularity. In all previous papers on this topic one poses restrictions on the centers of these valuations and often one uses several definitions for Poincaré series. In this article we show that these definitions can differ when the centers of the valuations are not zero-dimensional, i.e. do not have the maximal ideal as center. We give a unifying definition for Poincaré series which also allows filtrations defined by valuations that are all nonzero-dimensional. We then show that this definition satisfies a nice relation between Poincaré series for embedded filtrations and Poincaré series for the ambient space and we give some application for singularities which are nondegenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedron.

Poincare series of embedded filtrations

In this article we define a Poincare series on a subspace of a complex analytic germ, induced by a multi-index filtration on the ambient space. We compute this Poincare series for subspaces defined by principal ideals. For plane curve singularities and nondegenerate singularities this Poincare series yields topological and geometric information. We compare this Poincare series with the one introduced in [E,G-Z]. In few cases they are equal and we show that the Poincare series we consider in this paper in general yields more information.

The holomorphy conjecture for ideals in dimension two

The holomorphy conjecture predicts that the local Igusa zeta function associated to a hypersurface and a character is holomorphic on $\mathbb{C}$ whenever the order of the character does not divide the order of any eigenvalue of the local monodromy of the hypersurface. In this note we propose the holomorphy conjecture for arbitrary subschemes at the level of the topological zeta function and we prove this conjecture for subschemes defined by an ideal that is generated by a finite number of complex polynomials in two variables.

Poles of the topological zeta function for plane curves and Newton polyhedra

The local topological zeta function is a rational function associated to a germ of a complex holomorphic function. This function can be computed from an embedded resolution of singularities of the germ. For nondegenerate functions it is also possible to compute it from the Newton polyhedron. Both ways give rise to a set of candidate poles of the topological zeta function, containing all poles. For plane curves, Veys showed how to filter the actual poles out of the candidate poles induced by the resolution graph. In this note we show how to determine from the Newton polyhedron of a nondegenerate plane curve which candidate poles are actual poles.

Zeta functions and monodromy for surfaces that are general for a toric idealistic cluster

In this article we consider surfaces that are general with respect to a 3- dimensional toric idealistic cluster. In particular, this means that blowing up a toric constellation provides an embedded resolution of singularities for these surfaces. First we give a formula for the topological zeta function directly in terms of the cluster. Then we study the eigenvalues of monodromy. In particular, we derive a useful criterion to be an eigenvalue. In a third part we prove the monodromy and the holomorphy conjecture for these surfaces.

Poincare series of a toric variety

For an affine toric variety X we compute the Poincare series of the multi-index filtration defined by a finite number of monomial divisorial valuations on the ring O_{X,0}. We give an alternative description of the Poincare series as an integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the projectivization of the space of germs O_{X,0}. In particular we study divisorial valuations on the ring O_{C^d,0} that arise by considering toric constellations. We give an explicit formula for the Poincare series and a nice geometric description. This generalizes an expression of the Poincare series for curves and rational surface singularities.

On the poles of topological zeta functions

We study the topological zeta function Z_{top,f}(s) associated to a polynomial f with complex coefficients. This is a rational function in one variable and we want to determine the numbers that can occur as a pole of some topological zeta function; by definition these poles are negative rational numbers. We deal with this question in any dimension. Denote P_n := {s_0 | \exists f in C[x_1,..., x_n] : Z_{top,f}(s) has a pole in s_0}. We show that {-(n-1)/2-1/i | i in Z_{>1}} is a subset of P_n; for n=2 and n=3, the last two authors proved before that these are exactly the poles less then -(n-1)/2. As main result we prove that each rational number in the interval [-(n-1)/2,0) is contained in P_n.
