A Twin gradient method for unconstrained optimization

We propose a new strategy for gradient-based unconstrained optimization, involving two parallel sequences of iterates that cooperate to determine their stepsizes via a \textit{Twin-Step} principle. Rather than minimizing the objective function individually, the algorithm selects steplengths that minimize the Euclidean distance between the two gradient based processes occurring simultaneously at each iteration. The theoretical analysis shows that the convergence of the mutual distance is governed by the angle between the search directions. In particular the effectiveness of the overall process degrades as the directions approach parallelism. To ensure robustness against collinearity, we introduce a hybrid framework, Twin-ABB$_{\min}$, which switches to the Adaptive Barzilai--Borwein method when the geometric cooperation becomes ineffective. Extensive and very promising numerical results evidence that the Twin phase creates favorable initial conditions for subsequent BB-type iterations.

Functional Clustering of Survival Data via Smoothed Log-Hazard Trajectories: A Risk-Dynamics Perspective

This paper investigates clustering in survival data by shifting the analytical focus from cumulative survival probabilities to instantaneous risk, as characterized by the hazard function. We model smoothed log-hazard trajectories as functional objects that capture the temporal evolution of risk and propose a clustering framework based on Functional Principal Component Analysis applied to B-spline smoothed log-hazard trajectories. The number of retained functional principal components is selected before clustering using a 95% cumulative explained-variance rule, and clustering is then performed on the unstandardized FPCA scores. The proposed methodology is evaluated through simulation studies covering progressively complex scenarios, including overlapping and crossing hazard functions, cohort imbalance, heterogeneous risk profiles, and outlier contamination. The framework is further illustrated on two real-world clinical datasets, the German Breast Cancer Study and the Primary Biliary Cirrhosis dataset. Results show that the proposed log-hazard-based functional clustering framework provides an interpretable representation of relative temporal risk dynamics, with competitive internal cohesion and explicit robustness diagnostics when compared with cumulative-survival-based benchmarks.

Conformal prediction for functional Ordinary kriging

Functional Ordinary Kriging is the most widely used method to predict a curve at a given spatial point. However, uncertainty remains an open issue. In this article a distribution-free prediction method based on two different modulation functions and two conformity scores is proposed. Through simulations and benchmark data analyses, we demonstrate the advantages of our approach when compared to standard methods.

Roughness regularization for functional data analysis with free knots spline estimation

In the era of big data, an ever-growing volume of information is recorded, either continuously over time or sporadically, at distinct time intervals. Functional Data Analysis (FDA) stands at the cutting edge of this data revolution, offering a powerful framework for handling and extracting meaningful insights from such complex datasets. The currently proposed FDA me\-thods can often encounter challenges, especially when dealing with curves of varying shapes. This can largely be attributed to the method's strong dependence on data approximation as a key aspect of the analysis process. In this work, we propose a free knots spline estimation method for functional data with two penalty terms and demonstrate its performance by comparing the results of several clustering methods on simulated and real data.
