Contact 5-manifolds with SU(2)-structure

We consider 5-manifolds with a contact form arising from a hypo structure, which we call \emph{hypo-contact}. We provide conditions which imply that there exists such a structure on an oriented hypersurface of a 6-manifold with a half-flat SU(3)-structure. For half-flat manifolds with a Killing vector field $X$ preserving the SU(3)-structure we study the geometry of the orbits space. Moreover, we describe the solvable Lie algebras admitting a \emph{hypo-contact} structure. This allows us exhibit examples of Sasakian $η$-Einstein manifolds, as well as to prove that such structures give rise to new metrics with holonomy SU(3) and to new metrics with holonomy $G_2$.

Generalized G_2-manifolds and SU(3)-structures

We construct a compact example of 7- dimensional manifold endowed with a weakly integrable generalized G_2-structure with respect to a closed and non trivial 3-form. Moreover, we investigate which type of SU(3)-structures on a 6-dimensional manifold N give rise to a strongly integrable generalized G_2-structure with respect to a non trivial 3-form on the product $N \times S^1$.

Nearly integrable SO(3)-structures on 5-dimensional Lie groups

Recent work Bobienski-Nurowski on 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with an SO(3) structure prompts us to investigate which Lie groups admit such a geometry. The case in which the SO(3) structure admits a compatible connection with torsion is considered. This leads to a classification under special behaviour of the onnection, which enables to recover all known examples, plus others bearing torsion of pure type. Suggestive relations with special structures in other dimensions are highlighted, with attention to eight-dimensional SU(3) geometry.

Special metrics in $G_2$ geometry

We review a recent series of $G_2$ manifolds constructed via solvable Lie groups obtained in math.DG/0409137. They carry two related distinguished metrics, one negative Einstein and the other in the conformal class of a Ricci-flat metric.

Stability of Abelian Complex Structures

Let $M = Γ\backslash G$ be a nilmanifold endowed with an invariant complex structure. We prove that Kuranishi deformations of abelian complex structures are all invariant complex structures, generalizing a result of C. Maclaughlin, H. Pedersen, Y.S. Poon and S. Salamon for 2-step nilmanifolds. We characterize small deformations that remain abelian. As an application, we observe that at real dimension six, the deformation process of abelian complex structures is stable within the class of nilpotent complex structures. We give an example to show that this property does not hold in higher dimension.

Conformally parallel G_2 structures on a class of solvmanifolds

Starting from a 6-dimensional nilpotent Lie group N endowed with an invariant SU(3) structure, we construct a homogeneous conformally parallel G_2-metric on an associated solvmanifold. We classify all half-flat SU(3) structures that endow the rank-one solvable extension of N with a conformally parallel G_2 structure. By suitably deforming the SU(3) structures obtained, we are able to describe the corresponding non-homogeneous Ricci-flat metrics with holonomy contained in G_2. In the process we also find a new metric with exceptional holonomy.

On some properties of the manifolds with skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy SU(n) and Sp(n)

In this paper we provide examples of hypercomplex manifolds which do not carry HKT structure. We also prove that the existence of HKT structure is not stable under small deformations. Similarly we provide examples of compact complex manifolds with vanishing first Chern class which do not admit a Hermitian structure with restricted holonomy of its Bismut connection in SU(n). Again we prove that such property is not stable under small deformations.

Families of strong KT structures in six dimensions

This paper classifies Hermitian structures on 6-dimensional nilmanifolds M=G/L for which the fundamental 2-form is d d-bar closed, a condition that is shown to depend only on the underlying complex structure J of M. The space of such J is described when G is the complex Heisenberg group, and explicit solutions are obtained from a limacon-shaped curve in the complex plane. Related theory provides examples of various types of Ricci-flat structures.

Hyperkähler torsion structures invariant by nilpotent Lie groups

We study HKT structures on nilpotent Lie groups and on associated nilmanifolds. We exhibit three weak HKT structures on $\R^8$ which are homogeneous with respect to extensions of Heisenberg type Lie groups. The corresponding hypercomplex structures are of a special kind, called abelian. We prove that on any 2-step nilpotent Lie group all invariant HKT structures arise from abelian hypercomplex structures. Furthermore, we use a correspondence between abelian hypercomplex structures and subspaces of ${\frak sp}(n)$ to produce continuous families of compact and noncompact of manifolds carrying non isometric HKT structures. Finally, geometrical properties of invariant HKT structures on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups are obtained.
