Chaoticity of generic analytic convex billiards

We show that a generic analytic strongly convex billiard is "maximally chaotic" in the sense that, for every rational number $\frac{p}{q} \in \mathbb{Q} \cap (0,1)$, all intersections between the stable and unstable manifolds of maximizing periodic orbits with rotation number $\frac{p}{q}$ are transverse.

Measure of maximal entropy for H-flows on non-compact manifolds

In this work, we introduce a natural class of chaotic flows on non-compact manifolds, called H-flows, which includes geodesic flows on non-compact manifolds with pinched negative curvature. We show that, under the additional assumption, called strong positive recurrence, that their entropy at infinity is strictly smaller than the topological entropy, such flows admit an invariant probability measure maximizing entropy. In particular, we compare several notions of entropy in a non-compact setting.

On the rigidity of the stable norm and Mather's {\beta}-function for geodesic flows

We investigate rigidity phenomena associated to the stable norm and Mather's $\beta$-function for Riemannian geodesic flows on closed manifolds. Given two metrics $g_1$ and $g_2$, we compare these objects pointwise at individual homology classes. Our main result establishes that if Mather's $\beta$-function (or the stable norm) of $g_2$ at a non-zero homology class h equals that of $g_1$ at $h$ multiplied by a suitable factor determined by the metrics, then the two metrics are homothetic on the Mather set of homology h associated to $g_1$. In the case of conformally equivalent metrics, this yields a pointwise criterion for homothety on the projected Mather set. Some consequences are discussed, including a pointwise rigidity result on the 2-torus implying that if a metric has the same Mather's $\beta$-function at some non-zero homology class as a normalized flat metric in the same conformal class, then the metric must be flat. This result can be considered a pointwise version of a similar global result by Bangert. Finally, an extension of these results to Ma\~n\'e's perturbations of general Tonelli Lagrangians is discussed.

Birkhoff attractors for dissipative symplectic billiards

The aim of the present paper is to propose and study a dissipative variant of symplectic billiards within planar strictly convex domains. The associated billiard map is dissipative, thus it admits a compact invariant set, the so-called Birkhoff attractor. Its complexity depends on the rate of the dissipation as well as on the geometry of the billiard table. We prove that (a) for strong dissipation, the Birkhoff attractor is a normally contracted graph over the zero section; (b) for mild dissipation, the Birkhoff attractor within a centrally symmetric domain is an indecomposable continuum whose restricted dynamics has positive topological entropy. We compare these results with the case of dissipative Birkhoff billiards, studied in a paper by Bernardi-Florio-Leguil

Birkhoff attractors of dissipative billiards

We study the dynamics of dissipative billiard maps within planar convex domains. Such maps have a global attractor. We are interested in the topological and dynamical complexity of the attractor, in terms both of the geometry of the billiard table and of the strength of the dissipation. We focus on the study of an invariant subset of the attractor, the so-called Birkhoff attractor. On the one hand, we show that for a generic convex table with "pinched" curvature, the Birkhoff attractor is a normally contracted manifold when the dissipation is strong. On the other hand, for a mild dissipation, we prove that generically the Birkhoff attractor is complicated, both from the topological and the dynamical point of view.

Vanishing asymptotic Maslov index for conformally symplectic flows

Motivated by Mather theory of minimizing measures for symplectic twist dynamics, we study conformally symplectic flows on a cotangent bundle. These dynamics are the most general dynamics for which it makes sense to look at (asymptotic) dynamical Maslov index. Our main result is the existence of invariant measures with vanishing index without any convexity hypothesis, in the general framework of conformally symplectic flows. A degenerate twist-condition hypothesis implies the existence of ergodic invariant measures with zero dynamical Maslov index and thus the existence of points with zero dynamical Maslov index.

Steady Euler flows on $\mathbb{R}^3$ with wild and universal dynamics

Understanding complexity in fluid mechanics is a major problem that has attracted the attention of physicists and mathematicians during the last decades. Using the concept of renormalization in dynamics, we show the existence of a locally dense set $\mathscr G$ of stationary solutions to the Euler equations in $\mathbb R^3$ such that each vector field $X\in \mathscr G$ is universal in the sense that any area preserving diffeomorphism of the disk can be approximated (with arbitrary precision) by the Poincar\'e map of $X$ at some transverse section. We remark that this universality is approximate but occurs at all scales. In particular, our results establish that a steady Euler flow may exhibit any conservative finite codimensional dynamical phenomenon; this includes the existence of horseshoes accumulated by elliptic islands, increasing union of horseshoes of Hausdorff dimension $3$ or homoclinic tangencies of arbitrarily high multiplicity. The steady solutions we construct are Beltrami fields with sharp decay at infinity. To prove these results we introduce new perturbation methods in the context of Beltrami fields that allow us to import deep techniques from bifurcation theory: the Gonchenko-Shilnikov-Turaev universality theory and the Newhouse and Duarte theorems on the geometry of wild hyperbolic sets. These perturbation methods rely on two tools from linear PDEs: global approximation and Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorems. These results imply a strong version of V.I. Arnold's vision on the complexity of Beltrami fields in Euclidean space.

Quantitative conditions for right-handedness of flows

We give a numerical condition for right-handedness of a dynamically convex Reeb flow on the $3$-sphere. Our condition is stated in terms of an asymptotic ratio between the amount of rotation of the linearised flow and the linking number of trajectories with a periodic orbit that spans a disk-like global surface of section. As an application, we find an explicit constant $\delta_* < 0.7225$ such that if a Riemannian metric on the $2$-sphere is $\delta$-pinched with $\delta > \delta_*$, then its geodesic flow lifts to a right-handed flow on the $3$-sphere. In particular, all finite non-empty collections of periodic orbits of such a geodesic flow bind open books whose pages are global surfaces of section.

Smooth conjugacy classes of 3D Axiom A flows

We show a rigidity result for 3-dimensional contact Axiom A flows: given two 3D contact Axiom A flows $Φ_1,Φ_2$ whose restrictions $Φ_1|_{Λ_1},Φ_2|_{Λ_2}$ to basic sets $Λ_1,Λ_2$ are orbit equivalent, we prove that if periodic orbits in correspondence have the same length, then the conjugacy is as regular as the flows and respects the contact structure, extending a previous result due to Feldman-Ornstein [21]. Some of the ideas are reminiscent of the work of Otal [51]. As an application, we show that the billiard maps of two open dispersing billiards without eclipse and with the same marked length spectrum are smoothly conjugated.

A Conley-type Lyapunov function for the strong chain recurrent set

Let $ϕ:X\times\mathbb{R} \rightarrow X$ be a continuous flow on a compact metric space $(X,d)$. In this article we constructively prove the existence of a continuous Lyapunov function for $ϕ$ which is strictly decreasing outside $\mathcal{SCR}_d(ϕ)$. Such a result generalizes Conley's Fundamental Theorem of Dynamical Systems for the strong chain recurrent set.

Monetary-fiscal interactions under price level targeting

The adoption of a "makeup" strategy is one of the proposals in the ongoing review of the Fed's monetary policy framework. Another suggestion, to avoid the zero lower bound, is a more active role for fiscal policy. We put together these ideas to study monetary-fiscal interactions under price level targeting. Under price level targeting and a fiscally-led regime, we find that following a deflationary demand shock: (i) the central bank increases (rather than decreases) the policy rate; (ii) the central bank, thus, avoids the zero lower bound; (iii) price level targeting is generally welfare improving if compared to inflation targeting.

Torsion of instability zones for conservative twist maps on the annulus

For a twist map $f$ of the annulus preserving the Lebesgue measure, we give sufficient conditions to assure the existence of a set of positive measure of points with non-zero asymptotic torsion. In particular, we deduce that every bounded instability region for $f$ contains a set of positive measure of points with non-zero asymptotic torsion. Moreover, for an exact symplectic twist map $f$, we provide a simple, geometric proof of a result by Cheng and Sun (see [CS96]) which characterizes $\mathcal{C}^0$-integrability of $f$ by the absence of conjugate points.

On the set of points of zero torsion for negative-torsion maps of the annulus

For negative-torsion maps on the annulus we show that on every $\mathcal{C}^1$ essential curve there is at least one point of zero torsion. As an outcome, we deduce that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points of zero torsion is greater or equal 1. As a byproduct, we obtain a Birkhoff's-theorem-like result for $\mathcal{C}^1$ essential curves in the framework of negative-torsion maps.

The generalized recurrent set, explosions and Lyapunov functions

We consider explosions in the generalized recurrent set for homeomorphisms on a compact metric space. We provide multiple examples to show that such explosions can occur, in contrast to the case for the chain recurrent set. We give sufficient conditions to avoid explosions and discuss their necessity. Moreover, we explain the relations between explosions and cycles for the generalized recurrent set. In particular, for a compact topological manifold with dimension greater or equal $2$, we characterize explosion phenomena in terms of existence of cycles. We apply our results to give sufficient conditions for stability, under $\mathscr{C}^0$ perturbations, of the property of admitting a continuous Lyapunov function which is not a first integral.

Torsion and Linking number for a surface diffeomorphism

For a $\mathcal{C}^1$ diffeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^2$ isotopic to the identity, we prove that for any value $l\in\mathbb{R}$ of the linking number at finite time of the orbits of two points there exists at least a point whose torsion at the same finite time equals $l\in\mathbb{R}$. As an outcome, we give a much simpler proof of a theorem by Matsumoto and Nakayama concerning torsion of measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$. In addition, in the framework of twist maps, we generalize a known result concerning the linking number of periodic points: indeed, we estimate such value for any couple of points for which the limit of the linking number exists.

Existence of Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov functions strict outside the strong chain recurrent set

The aim of this paper is to study in detail the relations between strong chain recurrence for flows and Lyapunov functions. For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, uniformly Lipschitz continuous on the compact subsets of the time, we first make explicit a Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov function strict -that is strictly decreasing- outside the strong chain recurrent set of the flow. This construction extends to flows some recent advances of Fathi and Pageault in the case of homeomorphisms; moreover, it improves Conley's result about the existence of a continuous Lyapunov function strictly decreasing outside the chain recurrent set of a continuous flow. We then present two consequences of this theorem. From one hand, we characterize the strong chain recurrent set in terms of Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov functions. From the other hand, in the case of a flow induced by a vector field, we establish a sufficient condition for the existence of a $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$ strict Lyapunov function and we also discuss various examples. Moreover, for general continuous flows, we show that the strong chain recurrent set has only one strong chain transitive component if and only if the only Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov functions are the constants. Finally, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition to guarantee that the strong chain recurrent set and the chain recurrent one coincide.

A Conley-type decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set

For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, the aim of this paper is to prove a Conley-type decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set. We first discuss in details the main properties of strong chain recurrent sets. We then introduce the notion of strongly stable set as an invariant set which is the intersection of the $ω$-limits of a specific family of nested and definitively invariant neighborhoods of itself. This notion strengthens the one of stable set; moreover, any attractor results strongly stable. We then show that strongly stable sets play the role of attractors in the decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set; indeed, we prove that the strong chain recurrent set coincides with the intersection of all strongly stable sets and their complementaries.
