On the transverse stability of smooth solitary waves in a two-dimensional Camassa-Holm equation

We consider the propagation of smooth solitary waves in a two-dimensional generalization of the Camassa--Holm equation. We show that transverse perturbations to one-dimensional solitary waves behave similarly to the KP-II theory. This conclusion follows from our two main results: (i) the double eigenvalue of the linearized equations related to the translational symmetry breaks under a transverse perturbation into a pair of the asymptotically stable resonances and (ii) small-amplitude solitary waves are linearly stable with respect to transverse perturbations.

Stability of smooth periodic traveling waves in the Degasperis-Procesi equation

We derive a precise energy stability criterion for smooth periodic waves in the Degasperis--Procesi (DP) equation. Compared to the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the number of negative eigenvalues of an associated Hessian operator changes in the existence region of smooth perodic waves. We utilize properties of the period function with respect to two parameters in order to obtain a smooth existence curve for the family of smooth periodic waves of a fixed period. The energy stability condition is derived on parts of this existence curve which correspond to either one or two negative eigenvalues of the Hessian operator. We show numerically that the energy stability condition is satisfied on either part of the curve and prove analytically that it holds in a neighborhood of the boundary of the existence region of smooth periodic waves.

Persistence of periodic traveling waves and Abelian integrals

It is well known that the existence of traveling wave solutions (TWS) for many partial differential equations (PDE) is a consequence of the fact that an associated planar ordinary differential equation (ODE) has certain types of solutions defined for all time. In this paper we address the problem of persistence of TWS of a given PDE under small perturbations. Our main results deal with the situation where the associated ODE has a center and, as a consequence, the original PDE has a continuum of periodic traveling wave solutions. We prove that the TWS that persist are controlled by the zeroes of some Abelian integrals. We apply our results to several famous PDE, like the Ostrovsky, Klein-Gordon, sine-Gordon, Korteweg-de Vries, Rosenau-Hyman, Camassa-Holm, and Boussinesq equations.

Stability of smooth periodic traveling waves in the Camassa-Holm equation

Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a precise condition for the spectral and orbital stability of the smooth periodic travelling waves and show numerically that this condition is satisfied in the open region where the smooth periodic waves exist.

Well-posedness of a highly nonlinear shallow water equation on the circle

We present a comprehensive introduction and overview of a recently derived model equation for waves of large amplitude in the context of shallow water waves and provide a literature review of all the available studies on this equation. Furthermore, we establish a novel result concerning the local well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem for space-periodic solutions with initial data from the Sobolev space $H^s$ on the circle for $s>3/2$.

Spectral instability of the peaked periodic wave in the reduced Ostrovsky equation

We show that the peaked periodic traveling wave of the reduced Ostrovsky equations with quadratic and cubic nonlinearity is spectrally unstable in the space of square integrable periodic functions with zero mean and the same period. The main novelty is that we discover a new instability phenomenon: the instability of the peaked periodic waves is induced by spectrum of a linearized operator which completely covers a closed vertical strip of the complex plane.

Linear instability and uniqueness of the peaked periodic wave in the reduced Ostrovsky equation

Stability of the peaked periodic waves in the reduced Ostrovsky equation has remained an open problem for a long time. In order to solve this problem we obtain sharp bounds on the exponential growth of the $L^2$ norm of co-periodic perturbations to the peaked periodic wave, from which it follows that the peaked periodic wave is linearly unstable. We also prove that the peaked periodic wave with parabolic profile is the unique peaked wave in the space of periodic $L^2$ functions with zero mean and a single minimum per period.

Shallow water models for stratified equatorial flows

Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a detailed analysis of the effect of a given density distribution on the depth-structure of the corresponding traveling waves.

Symmetric solutions of evolutionary partial differential equations

We show that for a large class of evolutionary nonlinear and nonlocal partial differential equations, symmetry of solutions implies very restrictive properties of the solutions and symmetry axes. These restrictions are formulated in terms of three principles, based on the structure of the equations. The first principle covers equations that allow for steady solutions and shows that any spatially symmetric solution is in fact steady with a speed determined by the motion of the axis of symmetry at the initial time. The second principle includes equations that admit breathers and steady waves, and therefore is less strong: it holds that the axes of symmetry are constant in time. The last principle is a mixed case, when the equation contains terms of the kind from both earlier principles, and there may be different outcomes; for a class of such equations one obtains that a spatially symmetric solution must be constant in both time and space. We list and give examples of more than 30 well-known equations and systems in one and several dimensions satisfying these principles; corresponding results for weak formulations of these equations may be attained using the same techniques. Our investigation is a generalisation of a local and one-dimensional version of the first principle from [E., Holden, and Raynaud, 2009] to nonlocal equations, systems and higher dimensions, as well as a study of the standing and mixed cases.

Spectral stability of periodic waves in the generalized reduced Ostrovsky equation

We consider stability of periodic travelling waves in the generalized reduced Ostrovsky equation with respect to co-periodic perturbations. Compared to the recent literature, we give a simple argument that proves spectral stability of all smooth periodic travelling waves independently on the nonlinearity power. The argument is based on the energy convexity and does not use coordinate transformations of the reduced Ostrovsky equations to the semi-linear equations of the Klein--Gordon type.

On the number of limit cycles for perturbed pendulum equations

We consider perturbed pendulum-like equations on the cylinder of the form $ \ddot x+\sin(x)= \varepsilon \sum_{s=0}^{m}{Q_{n,s} (x)\, \dot x^{s}}$ where $Q_{n,s}$ are trigonometric polynomials of degree $n$, and study the number of limit cycles that bifurcate from the periodic orbits of the unperturbed case $\varepsilon=0$ in terms of $m$ and $n$. Our first result gives upper bounds on the number of zeros of its associated first order Melnikov function, in both the oscillatory and the rotary regions. These upper bounds are obtained expressing the corresponding Abelian integrals in terms of polynomials and the complete elliptic functions of first and second kind. Some further results give sharp bounds on the number of zeros of these integrals by identifying subfamilies which are shown to be Chebyshev systems.

On the wave length of smooth periodic traveling waves of the Camassa-Holm equation

This paper is concerned with the wave length $λ$ of smooth periodic traveling wave solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. The set of these solutions can be parametrized using the wave height $a$ (or "peak-to-peak amplitude"). Our main result establishes monotonicity properties of the map $a\longmapsto λ(a)$, i.e., the wave length as a function of the wave height. We obtain the explicit bifurcation values, in terms of the parameters associated to the equation, which distinguish between the two possible qualitative behaviours of $λ(a)$, namely monotonicity and unimodality. The key point is to relate $λ(a)$ to the period function of a planar differential system with a quadratic-like first integral, and to apply a criterion which bounds the number of critical periods for this type of systems.

Singular solutions for a class of traveling wave equations arising in hydrodynamics

We give an exhaustive characterization of singular weak solutions for ordinary differential equations of the form $\ddot{u}\,u + \frac{1}{2}\dot{u}^2 + F'(u) =0$, where $F$ is an analytic function. Our motivation stems from the fact that in the context of hydrodynamics several prominent equations are reducible to an equation of this form upon passing to a moving frame. We construct peaked and cusped waves, fronts with finite-time decay and compact solitary waves. We prove that one cannot obtain peaked and compactly supported traveling waves for the same equation. In particular, a peaked traveling wave cannot have compact support and vice versa. To exemplify the approach we apply our results to the Camassa-Holm equation and the equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude, and show how the different types of singular solutions can be obtained varying the energy level of the corresponding planar Hamiltonian systems.

Traveling surface waves of moderate amplitude in shallow water

We study traveling wave solutions of an equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude arising as a shallow water approximation of the Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible and homogenous fluids. We obtain solitary waves of elevation and depression, including a family of solitary waves with compact support, where the amplitude may increase or decrease with respect to the wave speed. Our approach is based on techniques from dynamical systems and relies on a reformulation of the evolution equation as an autonomous Hamiltonian system which facilitates an explicit expression for bounded orbits in the phase plane to establish existence of the corresponding periodic and solitary traveling wave solutions.
