Polarization vector conjugation in a photonic integrated circuit

We show how to perform polarization conjugation of light in a simple apparatus without any nonlinear optical materials, based on self-configuring Mach-Zehnder interferometers fed by a polarization splitter. This allows us to completely and automatically remove the polarization variations on a single beam or mode propagating through an optical system with arbitrary birefringence, such as a conventional optical fiber, and compensate polarization variations experienced in the forward direction by propagating the conjugated beam back through the system and recreating the original polarization at the source. We demonstrate this polarization conjugation in an optical fiber setup in different orientations with a measured polarization extinction ratio of -30 dB for the returned beam.

Integrated Photonic Polarization Synthesizer and Analyzer

Polarization-resolved control and measurement of the optical field are essential for a wide range of photonic systems, including coherent communication, polarimetric sensing, and quantum information processing. We present a photonic integrated circuit that enables the generation and analysis of arbitrary polarization states. The device provides reconfigurable access to the full polarization degree of freedom of coherent light within a single integrated platform. We experimentally demonstrate arbitrary polarization state generation spanning the Poincare sphere, as well as Stokes vector measurement on chip. Unlike conventional Stokes measurements that rely on direct detection, polarization analysis utilizing this architecture is intrinsically non-destructive, preserving the optical signal for further optical domain processing. The devices are fabricated in a commercial foundry using CMOS-compatible processes, enabling scalable and reproducible integration. By combining polarization generation and analysis in a compact and stable photonic circuit, this work eliminates the need for external polarization optics and provides a foundation for robust, polarization-enabled photonic integrated systems.

Three-Wave Interaction Grating Coupler with Sub-Decibel Insertion Loss at Normal Incidence

We report the design, fabrication in a commercial foundry, and experimental results of high-efficiency, normal incidence grating couplers for silicon photonics. We observe a maximum coupling efficiency of 85.4% (-0.69 dB) with a 1 dB bandwidth of 20 nm at a central wavelength of 1546 nm. These experimental results verify earlier theoretical and simulation results and pave the way for the use of perfectly vertical grating couplers, as an alternative to edge coupling, in silicon photonics applications that are sensitive to input coupling loss. Further, these results enable the use of grating couplers for vertically oriented elements, such as multicore fibers and VCSELs, and address challenges associated with coupling to free space beams.
