Multi-task Video Enhancement for Dental Interventions

A microcamera firmly attached to a dental handpiece allows dentists to continuously monitor the progress of conservative dental procedures. Video enhancement in video-assisted dental interventions alleviates low-light, noise, blur, and camera handshakes that collectively degrade visual comfort. To this end, we introduce a novel deep network for multi-task video enhancement that enables macro-visualization of dental scenes. In particular, the proposed network jointly leverages video restoration and temporal alignment in a multi-scale manner for effective video enhancement. Our experiments on videos of natural teeth in phantom scenes demonstrate that the proposed network achieves state-of-the-art results in multiple tasks with near real-time processing. We release Vident-lab at https://doi.org/10.34808/1jby-ay90, the first dataset of dental videos with multi-task labels to facilitate further research in relevant video processing applications.

Labeler-hot Detection of EEG Epileptic Transients

Preventing early progression of epilepsy and so the severity of seizures requires an effective diagnosis. Epileptic transients indicate the ability to develop seizures but humans overlook such brief events in an electroencephalogram (EEG) what compromises patient treatment. Traditionally, training of the EEG event detection algorithms has relied on ground truth labels, obtained from the consensus of the majority of labelers. In this work, we go beyond labeler consensus on EEG data. Our event descriptor integrates EEG signal features with one-hot encoded labeler category that is a key to improved generalization performance. Notably, boosted decision trees take advantage of singly-labeled but more varied training sets. Our quantitative experiments show the proposed labeler-hot epileptic event detector consistently outperforms a consensus-trained detector and maintains confidence bounds of the detection. The results on our infant EEG recordings suggest datasets can gain higher event variety faster and thus better performance by shifting available human effort from consensus-oriented to separate labeling when labels include both, the event and the labeler category.

Proximal primal-dual best approximation algorithm with memory

We propose a new modified primal-dual proximal best approximation method for solving convex not necessarily differentiable optimization problems. The novelty of the method relies on introducing memory by taking into account iterates computed in previous steps in the formulas defining current iterate. To this end we consider projections onto intersections of halfspaces generated on the basis of the current as well as the previous iterates. To calculate these projections we are using recently obtained closed-form expressions for projectors onto polyhedral sets. The resulting algorithm with memory inherits strong convergence properties of the original best approximation proximal primal-dual algorithm. Additionally, we compare our algorithm with the original (non-inertial) one with the help of the so called attraction property defined below. Extensive numerical experimental results on image reconstruction problems illustrate the advantages of including memory into the original algorithm.

Spatially variant PSF modeling in confocal macroscopy

Point spread function (PSF) plays an essential role in image reconstruction. In the context of confocal microscopy, optical performance degrades towards the edge of the field of view as astigmatism, coma and vignetting. Thus, one should expect the related artifacts to be even stronger in macroscopy, where the field of view is much larger. The field aberrations in macroscopy fluorescence imaging system was observed to be symmetrical and to increase with the distance from the center of the field of view. In this paper we propose an experiment and an optimization method for assessing the center of the field of view. The obtained results constitute a step towards reducing the number of parameters in macroscopy PSF model.

A Majorize-Minimize subspace approach for l2-l0 image regularization

In this work, we consider a class of differentiable criteria for sparse image computing problems, where a nonconvex regularization is applied to an arbitrary linear transform of the target image. As special cases, it includes edge-preserving measures or frame-analysis potentials commonly used in image processing. As shown by our asymptotic results, the l2-l0 penalties we consider may be employed to provide approximate solutions to l0-penalized optimization problems. One of the advantages of the proposed approach is that it allows us to derive an efficient Majorize-Minimize subspace algorithm. The convergence of the algorithm is investigated by using recent results in nonconvex optimization. The fast convergence properties of the proposed optimization method are illustrated through image processing examples. In particular, its effectiveness is demonstrated on several data recovery problems.
