Uplink Positioning for PASS in Multipath Environments

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) enhance wireless propagation by activating or placing pinching antennas (PAs) near users. Therefore, accurate uplink positioning is essential for efficient communication. In this paper, an uplink multi-carrier positioning framework is established for PASS in multipath environments. Matrix pencil (MP)-based and low-complexity Rank-1 ranging algorithms are proposed to estimate the distances between the PAs and the user. For the MP-based ranging algorithm, the line-of-sight (LoS) component is separated from non-line-of-sight components by exploiting the shift-invariance property of the Hankel matrix, thereby enabling accurate distance estimation. For the Rank-1 ranging algorithm, the dominant LoS delay is directly isolated through truncated singular value decomposition, thereby avoiding matrix inversions. Subsequently, a two-stage weighted nonlinear least-squares (WNLS) positioning algorithm is designed to estimate the three-dimensional user position. To gain further insights, a comprehensive theoretical performance analysis of the proposed ranging and positioning algorithms is conducted. The closed-form ranging variances and position error bound (PEB) are derived to reveal the error propagation mechanism. Numerical results demonstrate that: i) The MP-based algorithm achieves higher accuracy and robustness than the Rank-1-based algorithm, while the Rank-1-based algorithm has lower computational complexity. ii) The positioning error of the MP-based algorithm follows the same trend as the derived PEB, whereas the Rank-1 algorithm exhibits an error floor due to multipath bias. iii) The positioning accuracy of the MP algorithm improves as the number of subcarriers increases.

On the Performance of Fluid Antenna Systems under Block-Diagonal Correlation Model

Fluid antenna systems (FASs) have recently emerged as a promising reconfigurable antenna technology for future wireless networks, owing to their unique ability to exploit fine-grained spatial channel variations within a compact aperture. In this paper, a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) FAS employing maximum-ratio combining (MRC) is investigated under the block-diagonal correlation model, where the ports of FAS are partitioned into independent blocks and the strongest port within each block is selected for MRC combining. Exact outage probability (OP) expressions are first derived in both convolution and characteristic-function forms. To gain further insights, closed-form high-SNR asymptotic expressions are developed, from which the diversity order is shown to approximate the number of ports. This result reveals that block partitioning influences only the coding gain and can therefore be optimized without compromising the diversity performance. For the ergodic rate (ER), a Gamma-matching approximation together with a tighter Jensen-based approximation is derived in closed form. Simulation results corroborate the analytical framework and demonstrate that: i) increasing either the number of ports or the number of blocks improves the system performance; ii) the diversity order depends solely on the number of ports; and iii) the proposed SIMO-FAS achieves comparable or superior outage performance to conventional MRC receivers despite employing fewer combining branches.

Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)-Based User-Side Navigation: An Anchor-Line-based Approach

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) are capable of dynamically reconfiguring wireless channels by flexibly repositioning pinching antennas (PAs) along the waveguides to establish short-range line-of-sight links. In this paper, a user-side navigation framework for PASS is proposed, where mobile users determine their own positions using only downlink broadcast signals without any prior knowledge of the PA positions. First, a Lambert W function-based PA positioning and pseudorange estimation (LWF-PAP) algorithm is developed, in which the closed-form expressions for both the PA positions along the waveguide and the PA-user pseudoranges are derived. Second, a weighted least squares-based PASS navigation (WLS-PAN) algorithm is formulated, where the nonlinear PASS-based navigation equations are transformed into a closed-form linear system, and the optimal weight matrix is derived, achieving minimum-variance unbiased estimation. Third, the PA-derived position dilution of precision (PA-PDOP) metric is further defined to characterize the theoretical accuracy bound. Simulation results demonstrate that centimeter-level positioning accuracy is achieved for both PAs and users within the breakpoint distance. It is also shown that uniform PA deployment and a moderate increase in the number of PAs effectively improve navigation accuracy, thereby validating the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed framework for distributed real-time user-side self-navigation.

On the Performance of Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS) Under Dynamic Channels with Blockages

The performance of pinching-antenna systems (PASS) is fundamentally affected by line-of-sight (LoS) blockage in practical environments. In this paper, PASS is investigated under realistic, obstacle-induced blockage by jointly considering the LoS and non-LoS (NLoS) components, rather than relying on a LoS channel or a probabilistic blockage model. A geometry-aware blockage model is adopted, where a blockage region on the waveguide is defined according to the actual locations and geometric features of obstacles, such that a pinching-antenna (PA) located within the blockage region is unable to establish a LoS link to the user equipment (UE). The channel models of PASS are developed by jointly accounting for in-waveguide attenuation and spatial propagation loss. To quantify the impact of channel factors on PASS performance, a single-PA single-UE scenario is studied under Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability are derived for both cases. For the ergodic rate, a closed-form expression is obtained in the Rayleigh case, while a complete analytical expression and an approximate closed-form expression are derived in the Rician case. Analytical expressions are derived for the endpoints of the blockage region, and the deployment criteria of optimal PA are provided. Simulation results validate the analysis and reveal that: i) NLoS scattering has a twofold effect on PASS performance, potentially degrading the outage performance while improving the rate performance under Rician fading; ii) Sufficiently strong NLoS scattering can still sustain communication in the presence of LoS blockage; iii) The optimal PA position is jointly determined by the environment geometry and the interplay between spatial propagation loss and in-waveguide attenuation.

Constrained Pinching Antenna Array Design for Sum-Rate Maximization in Multi-User PASS

Pinching antenna systems (PASS) have recently emerged as a promising architecture for flexible indoor wireless communications. However, most existing pinching antenna (PA) array designs for multi-user PASS either offer limited beam adaptation accuracy or require prohibitively high deployment cost. In this paper, we investigate a more practical constrained pinching antenna array (C-PAA)-assisted downlink PASS, where multiple PAs are grouped into a movable array and can be finely adjusted within the array at the wavelength scale. To improve the system spectral efficiency, a sum-rate maximization problem is formulated by jointly considering the array-center position and the fine-grained antenna distribution within the C-PAA. First, the structural properties of the C-PAA are characterized, and an explicit upper bound on the array aperture is derived. Then, tractable approximations for the effective channel gain and the achievable user rate are developed. Furthermore, the optimization problem of the multi-user sum-rate is analyzed, where the system sum-rate function is shown to exhibit a favorable unimodal behavior under practically relevant conditions, which enables an efficient one-dimensional search for the optimal C-PAA position. To further reduce the computational complexity, a closed-form approximate solution for the near-optimal array-center position is derived. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the developed analysis and demonstrate that the proposed C-PAA scheme closely approaches the ideal upper bound and significantly outperforms conventional fixed-spacing and existing PA array benchmarks.

Rate Maximization for Multi-Waveguide PASS: A Hierarchical User Scheduling and Joint Optimization Framework

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) have emerged as a promising flexible-antenna architecture capable of dynamically reconfiguring wireless channels by activating dielectric particles along waveguides. The sum rate maximization problem in multi-waveguide PASS is investigated in this study. Both in-waveguide propagation loss and coupling effects are explicitly modeled. To tackle the optimization problem, a hierarchical user scheduling (HUS) algorithm is proposed. The HUS algorithm minimizes the sum of squared distances between users and their associated waveguides to mitigate path loss. Additionally, spatially separated users are assigned within each time slot to reduce inter-user interference. Furthermore, a joint optimization framework integrating power allocation and pinching-antenna (PA) positioning is developed to further improve system sum rate. Specifically, PAs' positions are optimized via one-dimensional search, while the power allocation problem is solved by using the Lagrangian duality and fractional programming. Numerical results show that the HUS algorithm clearly outperforms random pairing, and the proposed power allocation algorithm shows a marked performance improvement over the maximum ratio transmission algorithm. Moreover, the results explicitly demonstrate the considerable impact of in-waveguide propagation loss and coupling effects on the performance of PASS.

Integrated Positioning and Communications for PASS: A Robust Approach

The pinching-antenna systems (PASS), which dynamically activate and relocate the pinching-antennas (PAs) along the dielectric waveguide, offer unprecedented potential for integrated positioning and communication. The multi-waveguide-based uplink positioning approaches for indoor environments are first proposed in this paper, and the downlink communication performance is analyzed. Two possible scenarios, multi-waveguide single-PA (MWSP) and multi-waveguide multi-PA (MWMP), are considered under the assumptions of line-of-sight channels and a single, stationary user. For the MWSP scenario, the received signal strength indication (RSSI)-based ranging method and the MWSP-based least square (LS) positioning algorithm are developed. To gain deeper insights, a comprehensive error analysis of the LS positioning algorithm is conducted. Subsequently, for the MWMP scenario, the closed-form expression of the superposed signal is derived. According to the signal power, the MWMP-based grid search algorithm is proposed and the estimation error of proposed algorithm is analyzed. Then, based on the user's positioning result, the PAs are relocated to provide downlink communication service, and the achievable data rate of MWSP and MWMP scenarios are analyzed. Numerical results validate the correctness of our analysis, which show that: i) For the MWSP scenario, a smaller geometric dilution of precision (GDoP) leads to a lower average positioning error. Furthermore, even when the GDoP is large, the regions where the distances to PAs are nearly equal achieve the best accuracy. ii) For the MWMP scenario, non-parallel waveguide deployment improves positioning accuracy, although errors increase with the number of PAs. iii) The noise has a serious double-impact on data rate. There is a trade-off between positioning accuracy and communication performance.

Multi-/Uni-Cast Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access-Based INAC

With the rapid development of satellite communication and navigation, there is an urgent need to integrate both technologies to achieve reliable communication and precise navigation services within the same satellite system. By combining multi-/uni-cast (MUC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technologies, we propose a novel MUC-NOMA-based integrated navigation and communication (INAC) signal structure, in which the navigation and communication signals share a common pseudo noise (PN) sequence, thereby integrating satellite communication and navigation at the signal level. According to different power allocation strategies, two scenarios are defined: multi-cast-oriented (MO-) INAC and uni-cast-oriented (UO-) INAC, where a greater portion of power is assigned to either the multi-cast or the uni-cast signal, respectively. To mitigate co-channel interference, we employ successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver and design a signal processing algorithm for the proposed INAC signal. Then, closed-form expressions are subsequently derived for the bit error rates (BER) of both the navigation and communication signals, along with the positioning accuracy of the navigation signal. To gain further insights, the impacts of power allocation factors and communication rates are evaluated. Our analysis results show that: i) In the MO-INAC scenario, the positioning and BER performance of navigation signal are excellent when more power is assigned to the multi-cast signal; ii) In the UO-INAC scenario, interference in the shared resources is reduced when more power is assigned to the uni-cast signal; iii) The ranging accuracy decreases as the communication data rate increases. Numerical results confirm the superior BER and positioning accuracy of the MO-INAC scenario for MEO satellites.

Satellite Navigation: A Transmitting Intelligent Surface (TIS)-aided Indoor System

A transmitting intelligent surfaces (TISs) aided satellite indoor navigation system is investigated. By leveraging the unique features of TIS, we address the limitations of conventional global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in providing reliable positioning services within indoor environments. To facilitate the extension of GNSS indoor signals, we establish an extended line-of-sight link using TIS which has the capability to change signal direction. A three-stage TIS-aided satellite indoor positioning algorithm (TSIPA), which utilizes the positions of TIS arrays and the angle of arrival, is proposed to locate indoor users. To evaluate the distribution of TIS arrays, we propose TIS position dilution of precision (TPDoP) to evaluate centroid deviation and utilize the root mean square error (RMSE) to represent compactness.

On the Performance of Single/Dual Fluid Antenna Systems

The emerging technology of fluid antenna systems (FASs) represents a promising next-generation reconfigurable antenna solution, capable of exploiting the full spatial diversity within a predefined space by finely reconfiguring the positions of radiating elements. In this paper, the performance of FAS over spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels is investigated for two distinct scenarios: a multiple-input single-output (MISO) configuration, where a receiver with a single-antenna FAS is served by a multi-antenna transmitter (MISO-FAS), and a single-input single-output setup where single-antenna FASs are equipped at both the transmitter and receiver (Dual-FAS). Exact expressions and closed-form approximations for the outage probability (OP) of both the MISO-FAS and Dual-FAS models are derived as the core contributions of this work. To provide deeper insights into system performance, the diversity orders for each model are also derived and analyzed. Analytical results demonstrate that increasing the number of ports significantly enhances system performance. The theoretical analysis is corroborated by key findings from our simulations, demonstrating that: $i$) Both the MISO-FAS and Dual-FAS models achieve considerable performance gains as the number of ports is increased; $ii$) System performance for both configurations is inversely related to the level of port correlation; lower correlation leads to better performance; $iii$) In the high signal-to-noise ratio regime, the Dual-FAS model surpasses the performance of the MISO-FAS model.

Rethinking Satellite Networks: When Navigation Meets Communications

This paper investigates satellite navigation and communication systems in both low-Earth-orbit (LEO) and medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) satellites, which systematically outlines the fundamental principles of satellite navigation systems (SNS), satellite communication systems (SCS), and integrated navigation and communication (INAC) systems. By exploring the enhanced capabilities of satellite systems, the article emphasizes how INAC systems improve overall functionality by enabling efficient signal multiplexing and multiple access, positioning multi-functional satellites as promising alternatives to traditional architectures. Moreover, it introduces emerging frontiers for LEO-based SNS and MEO-based SCS through the integration of advanced sixth-generation (6G) wireless technologies, which cannot be realized through mere extensions of existing communication or navigation techniques. Motivated by these insights, the article further discusses various conceptual transitions required to unlock the full potential of INAC systems, with particular focus on channel capacity, positioning accuracy, and artificial intelligence-enabled waveform design.

Industrial overcapacity can enable seasonal flexibility in electricity use

In many countries, declining demand in energy-intensive industries (EIIs) such as cement, steel, and aluminum is leading to industrial overcapacity. Although industrial overcapacity is traditionally envisioned as problematic and resource-wasteful, it could unlock EIIs' flexibility in electricity use. Here, using China's aluminum smelting industry as a case study, we evaluate the system-level cost-benefit of retaining EII overcapacity for flexible electricity use in decarbonized energy systems. We find that overcapacity can enable aluminum smelters to adopt a seasonal operation paradigm, ceasing production during winter load peaks that are exacerbated by heating electrification and renewable seasonality. This seasonal operation paradigm could reduce the investment and operational costs of China's decarbonized electricity system by 23-32 billion CNY/year (11-15% of the aluminum smelting industry's product value), sufficient to offset the increased smelter maintenance and product storage costs associated with overcapacity. It may also create labor complementarities between the aluminum and thermal power sectors.

Scaling green hydrogen and CCUS via cement-methanol co-production in China

High costs of green hydrogen and of carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) have hindered policy ambition and slowed real-world deployment, despite their importance for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, including cement and methanol. Given the economic challenges of adopting CCUS in cement and green hydrogen in methanol production separately, we propose a renewable-powered co-production system that couples electrolytic hydrogen and CCUS through molecule exchange. We optimize system configurations using an hourly-resolved, process-based model incorporating operational flexibility, and explore integrated strategies for plant-level deployment and CO2 source-sink matching across China. We find that co-production could reduce CO2 abatement costs to USD 41-53 per tonne by 2035, significantly lower than approximately USD 75 for standalone cement CCUS and over USD 120 for standalone renewable-based methanol. Co-production is preferentially deployed at cement plants in renewable-rich regions, potentially reshaping national CO2 infrastructure planning. This hydrogen-CCUS coupling paradigm could accelerate industrial decarbonization and scaling for other applications.

Pinching-Antenna Systems (PASS)-based Indoor Positioning

Pinching antenna (PA), a flexible waveguide integrated with dielectric particles, intelligently reconstructs line-of-sight channels. Utilizing its geometric deterministic model and meter-level reconstruction, PA systems (PASS) are applied to uplink indoor positioning. In this paper, the uplink positioning system model for PASS is firstly proposed. A PASS-based received signal strength indication (RSSI) method is proposed to measure the distance from the users to each PA, which is efficient and suitable for PASS. PASS-based weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm is designed to calculate the two-dimensional coordinates of the users. Several critical observations can be drawn from our results: i) More PAs on the waveguide improves the positioning accuracy and robustness. ii) When the number of PAs exceeds a certain threshold, the performance gain becomes marginal. iii) User locations between and near PAs yield superior positioning accuracy.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface aided Integrated-Navigation-and-Communication in Urban Canyons: A Satellite Selection Approach

This study investigates the application of a simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-aided medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) satellite network for providing both global positioning services and communication services in the urban canyons, where the direct satellite-user links are obstructed. Superposition coding (SC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) techniques are utilized for the integrated navigation and communication (INAC) networks, and the composed navigation and communication signals are reflected or transmitted to ground users or indoor users located in urban canyons. To meet diverse application needs, navigation-oriented (NO)-INAC and communication-oriented (CO)-INAC have been developed, each tailored according to distinct power allocation factors. We then proposed two algorithms, namely navigation-prioritized-algorithm (NPA) and communication-prioritized-algorithm (CPA), to improve the navigation or communication performance by selecting the satellite with the optimized position dilution of precision (PDoP) or with the best channel gain. The effectiveness of the proposed STAR-RIS-aided INAC network is quantified by analyzing the positioning error for navigation services and by evaluating communication performance through achievable ergodic rate metrics. Our satellite selection approach indicates that: the positioning services at the urban canyon users can be completed with the aid of STAR-RIS. 2) Additionally, it is observed that while a single STAR-RIS array can extend the navigational link, it fails to serve users in indoor scenarios, highlighting a limitation in the current system design.

ASTARS empowered Satellite Positioning Approach for Urban Canyons and Indoor Environments

To mitigate the loss of satellite navigation signals in urban canyons and indoor environments, we propose an active simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (ASTARS) empowered satellite positioning approach. Deployed on building structures, ASTARS reflects navigation signals to outdoor receivers in urban canyons and transmits signals indoors to bypass obstructions, providing high-precision positioning services to receivers in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) areas. The path between ASTARS and the receiver is defined as the extended line-of-sight (ELoS) path and an improved carrier phase observation equation is derived to accommodate that. The receiver compensates for its clock bias through network time synchronization, corrects the actual signal path distance to the satellite-to-receiver distance through a distance correction algorithm, and determines its position by using the least squares (LS) method. Mathematical modeling of the errors introduced by the proposed method is conducted, followed by simulation analysis to assess their impact. Simulation results show that: 1) in areas where GNSS signals are blocked, with time synchronization accuracy within a 10 ns error range, the proposed method provides positioning services with errors not exceeding 4 m for both indoor and outdoor receivers, outperforming conventional NLoS methods with positioning errors of more than 7 m; 2) the additional errors introduced by the proposed method do not exceed 3 m for time synchronization errors within 10 ns, which includes the phase shift, beamwidth error, time synchronization errors, and satellite distribution errors, outperforming traditional NLoS methods, which typically produce positioning errors greater than 5 m.

Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna System under Spatially-Correlated Rician Fading Channels

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) are among the most promising technologies for the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication networks. Unlike traditional fixed-position multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, a FAS possesses position reconfigurability to switch on-demand among $N$ predefined ports over a prescribed space. This paper explores the performance of a single-input single-output (SISO) model with a fixed-position antenna transmitter and a single-antenna FAS receiver, referred to as the Rx-SISO-FAS model, under spatially-correlated Rician fading channels. Our contributions include exact expressions and closed-form bounds for the outage probability of the Rx-SISO-FAS model, as well as exact and closed-form lower bounds for the ergodic rate. Importantly, we also analyze the performance considering both uniform linear array (ULA) and uniform planar array (UPA) configurations for the ports of the FAS. To gain insights, we evaluate the diversity order of the proposed model and our analytical results indicate that with a fixed overall system size, increasing the number of ports, $N$, significantly decreases the outage performance of FAS under different Rician fading factors. Our numerical results further demonstrate that: $i)$ the Rx-SISO-FAS model can enhance performance under spatially-correlated Rician fading channels over the fixed-position antenna counterpart; $ii)$ the Rician factor negatively impacts performance in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime; $iii$) FAS can outperform an $L$ branches maximum ratio combining (MRC) system under Rician fading channels; and $iv)$ when the number of ports is identical, UPA outperforms ULA.

dpBento: Benchmarking DPUs for Data Processing

Data processing units (DPUs, SoC-based SmartNICs) are emerging data center hardware that provide opportunities to address cloud data processing challenges. Their onboard compute, memory, network, and auxiliary storage can be leveraged to offload a variety of data processing tasks. Although recent work shows promising benefits of DPU offloading for specific operations, a comprehensive view of the implications of DPUs for data processing is missing. Benchmarking can help, but existing benchmark tools lack the focus on data processing and are limited to specific DPUs. In this paper, we present dpBento, a benchmark suite that aims to uncover the performance characteristics of different DPU resources and different DPUs, and the performance implications of offloading a wide range of data processing operations and systems to DPUs. It provides an abstraction for automated performance testing and reporting and is easily extensible. We use dpBento to measure recent DPUs, present our benchmarking results, and highlight insights into the potential benefits of DPU offloading for data processing.
