On the empirical spectral distribution for certain models related to sample covariance matrices with different correlations

Given $n,m\in \mathbb{N}$, we study two classes of large random matrices of the form $$ \mathcal{L}_n =\sum_{α=1}^mξ_α\mathbf{y}_α\mathbf{y}_α^T\quad\text{and}\quad \mathcal{A}_n =\sum_{α=1}^mξ_α(\mathbf{y}_α\mathbf{x}_α^T+\mathbf{x}_α\mathbf{y}_α^T), $$ where for every $n$, $(ξ_α)_α\subset \mathbb{R}$ are iid random variables independent of $(\mathbf{x}_α,\mathbf{y}_α)_α$, and $(\mathbf{x}_α)_α$, $(\mathbf{y}_α)_α\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ are two (not necessarily independent) sets of independent random vectors having different covariance matrices and generating well concentrated bilinear forms. We consider two main asymptotic regimes as $n,m(n)\to \infty$: a standard one, where $m/n\to c$, and a slightly modified one, where $m/n\to\infty$ and $\mathbf{E}ξ\to 0$ while $m\mathbf{E}ξ/n\to c$ for some $c\ge 0$. Assuming that vectors $(\mathbf{x}_α)_α$ and $(\mathbf{y}_α)_α$ are normalized and isotropic "in average", we prove the convergence in probability of the empirical spectral distributions of $\mathcal{L}_n $ and $\mathcal{A}_n $ to a version of the Marchenko-Pastur law and so called effective medium spectral distribution, correspondingly. In particular, choosing normalized Rademacher random variables as $(ξ_α)_α$, in the modified regime one can get a shifted semicircle and semicircle laws. We also apply our results to the certain classes of matrices having block structures, which were studied in [9, 21].

On delocalization of eigenvectors of random non-Hermitian matrices

We study delocalization of null vectors and eigenvectors of random matrices with i.i.d entries. Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d real subgaussian entries of zero mean and unit variance. We show that with probability at least $1-e^{-\log^{2} n}$ $$ \min\limits_{I\subset[n],\,|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq \frac{m^{3/2}}{n^{3/2}\log^Cn}\|{\bf v}\| $$ for any real eigenvector ${\bf v}$ and any $m\in[\log^C n,n]$, where ${\bf v}_I$ denotes the restriction of ${\bf v}$ to $I$. Further, when the entries of $A$ are complex, with i.i.d real and imaginary parts, we show that with probability at least $1-e^{-\log^{2} n}$ all eigenvectors of $A$ are delocalized in the sense that $$ \min\limits_{I\subset[n],\,|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq \frac{m}{n\log^Cn}\|{\bf v}\| $$ for all $m\in[\log^C{n},n]$. Comparing with related results, in the range $m\in[\log^{C'}{n},n/\log^{C'}{n}]$ in the i.i.d setting and with weaker probability estimates, our lower bounds on $\|{\bf v}_I\|$ strengthen an earlier estimate $\min\limits_{|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq c(m/n)^6\|{\bf v}\| $ obtained in [M. Rudelson, R. Vershynin, Geom. Func. Anal., 2016], and bounds $\min\limits_{|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq c(m/n)^2\|{\bf v}\|$ (in the real setting) and $\min\limits_{|I|= m}\|{\bf v}_I\| \geq c(m/n)^{3/2}\|{\bf v}\|$ (in the complex setting) established in [K. Luh, S. O'Rourke, arXiv:1810.00489]. As the case of real and complex Gaussian matrices shows, our bounds are optimal up to the polylogarithmic multiples. We derive stronger estimates without the polylogarithmic error multiples for null vectors of real $(n-1)\times n$ random matrices.

Structure of eigenvectors of random regular digraphs

Let $d$ and $n$ be integers satisfying $C\leq d\leq \exp(c\sqrt{\ln n})$ for some universal constants $c, C>0$, and let $z\in \mathbb{C}$. Denote by $M$ the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we study the structure of the kernel of submatrices of $M-z\,{\rm Id}$, formed by removing a subset of rows. We show that with large probability the kernel consists of two non-intersecting types of vectors, which we call very steep and gradual with many levels. As a corollary, we show, in particular, that every eigenvector of $M$, except for constant multiples of $(1,1,\dots,1)$, possesses a weak delocalization property: its level sets have cardinality less than $Cn\ln^2 d/\ln n$. For a large constant $d$ this provides a principally new structural information on eigenvectors, implying that the number of their level sets grows to infinity with $n$. As a key technical ingredient of our proofs we introduce a decomposition of $\mathbb{C}^n$ into vectors of different degrees of `structuredness', which is an alternative to the decomposition based on the least common denominator in the regime when the underlying random matrix is very sparse.

The rank of random regular digraphs of constant degree

Let $d$ be a fixed large integer. For any $n$ larger than $d$, let $A_n$ be the adjacency matrix of the random directed $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices, with the uniform distribution. We show that $A_n$ has rank at least $n-1$ with probability going to one as $n$ goes to infinity. The proof combines the method of simple switchings and a recent result of the authors on delocalization of eigenvectors of $A_n$.

The smallest singular value of a shifted $d$-regular random square matrix

We derive a lower bound on the smallest singular value of a random $d$-regular matrix, that is, the adjacency matrix of a random $d$-regular directed graph. More precisely, let $C_1<d< c_1 n/\log^2 n$ and let $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $0/1$-valued square $n\times n$ matrices such that each row and each column of a matrix $M\in \mathcal{M}_{n,d}$ has exactly $d$ ones. Let $M$ be uniformly distributed on $\mathcal{M}_{n,d}$. Then the smallest singular value $s_{n} (M)$ of $M$ is greater than $c_2 n^{-6}$ with probability at least $1-C_2\log^2 d/\sqrt{d}$, where $c_1$, $c_2$, $C_1$, and $C_2$ are absolute positive constants independent of any other parameters.

Circular law for sparse random regular digraphs

Fix a constant $C\geq 1$ and let $d=d(n)$ satisfy $d\leq \ln^{C} n$ for every large integer $n$. Denote by $A_n$ the adjacency matrix of a uniform random directed $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. We show that, as long as $d\to\infty$ with $n$, the empirical spectral distribution of appropriately rescaled matrix $A_n$ converges weakly in probability to the circular law. This result, together with an earlier work of Cook, completely settles the problem of weak convergence of the empirical distribution in directed $d$-regular setting with the degree tending to infinity. As a crucial element of our proof, we develop a technique of bounding intermediate singular values of $A_n$ based on studying random normals to rowspaces and on constructing a product structure to deal with the lack of independence between the matrix entries.

The variance of the $\ell_p^n$-norm of the Gaussian vector, and Dvoretzky's theorem

Let $n$ be a large integer, and let $G$ be the standard Gaussian vector in $R^n$. Paouris, Valettas and Zinn (2015) showed that for all $p\in[1,c\log n]$, the variance of the $\ell_p^n$--norm of $G$ is equivalent, up to a constant multiple, to $\frac{2^p}{p}n^{2/p-1}$, and for $p\in[C\log n,\infty]$, $\mathbb{Var}\|G\|_p\simeq (\log n)^{-1}$. Here, $C,c>0$ are universal constants. That result left open the question of estimating the variance for $p$ logarithmic in $n$. In this note, we resolve the question by providing a complete characterization of $\mathbb{Var}\|G\|_p$ for all $p$. We show that there exist two transition points (windows) in which behavior of $\mathbb{Var}\|G\|_p$, viewed as a function of $p$, significantly changes. We also discuss some implications of our result in context of random Dvoretzky's theorem for $\ell_p^n$.

CLT for linear eigenvalue statistics for a tensor product version of sample covariance matrices

For $k,m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, we consider $n^k\times n^k$ random matrices of the form $$ \mathcal{M}_{n,m,k}(\mathbf{y})=\sum_{α=1}^mτ_α{Y_α}Y_α^T,\quad Y_α=\mathbf{y}_α^{(1)}\otimes...\otimes\mathbf{y}_α^{(k)}, $$ where $τ_{α}$, $α\in[m]$, are real numbers and $\mathbf{y}_α^{(j)}$, $α\in[m]$, $j\in[k]$, are i.i.d. copies of a normalized isotropic random vector $\mathbf{y}\in \mathbb{R}^n$. For every fixed $k\ge 1$, if the Normalized Counting Measures of $\{τ_{α}\}_α$ converge weakly as $m,n\rightarrow \infty$, $m/n^k\rightarrow c\in \lbrack 0,\infty )$ and $\mathbf{y}$ is a good vector in the sense of Definition 1.1, then the Normalized Counting Measures of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{M}_{n,m,k}(\mathbf{y})$ converge weakly in probability to a non-random limit found in [15]. For $k=2$, we define a subclass of good vectors $\mathbf{y}$ for which the centered linear eigenvalue statistics $n^{-1/2}\text{Tr} \,φ(\mathcal{M}_{n,m,2}(\mathbf{y}))^\circ$ converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable, i.e., the Central Limit Theorem is valid.

Adjacency matrices of random digraphs: singularity and anti-concentration

Let ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ be the set of all $d$-regular directed graphs on $n$ vertices. Let $G$ be a graph chosen uniformly at random from ${\mathcal D}_{n,d}$ and $M$ be its adjacency matrix. We show that $M$ is invertible with probability at least $1-C\ln^{3} d/\sqrt{d}$ for $C\leq d\leq cn/\ln^2 n$, where $c, C$ are positive absolute constants. To this end, we establish a few properties of $d$-regular directed graphs. One of them, a Littlewood-Offord type anti-concentration property, is of independent interest. Let $J$ be a subset of vertices of $G$ with $|J|\approx n/d$. Let $δ_i$ be the indicator of the event that the vertex $i$ is connected to $J$ and define $δ= (δ_1, δ_2, ..., δ_n)\in \{0, 1\}^n$. Then for every $v\in\{0,1\}^n$ the probability that $δ=v$ is exponentially small. This property holds even if a part of the graph is "frozen".

On a Limiting Distribution of Singular Values of Random Band Matrices

An equation is obtained for the Stieltjes transform of the normalized distribution of singular values of non-symmetric band random matrices in the limit when the band width and rank of the matrix simultaneously tend to infinity. Conditions under which this limit agrees with the quarter-circle law are found. An interesting particular case of lower triangular random matrices is also considered and certain properties of the corresponding limiting singular value distribution are given.

On Non-Gaussian Limiting Laws for the Certain Statistics of the Wigner Matrices

We continue investigations of our previous papers, in which there were proved central limit theorems (CLT) for linear eigenvalue statistics Tr f(M_n) and there were found the limiting probability laws for the normalised matrix elements of differential functions f(M_n) of nxn real symmetric Wigner matrices M_n. Here we consider another spectral characteristic of Wigner matrices, namely, Tr f(M_n)A_n, where {A_n, n=1,2,...} is a certain sequence of non-random matrices. We show first that if M_n belongs to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, then Tr f(M_n)A_n satisfies CLT. Then we consider Wigner matrices with i.i.d. entries possessing entire characteristic function and find the limiting probability law for Tr f(M_n)A_n, which in general is not Gaussian.
