The $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers

The $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic is a refinement in algebraic geometry of the classical topological Euler characteristic, which can be constructed using motivic homotopy theory. This invariant is a quadratic form rather than an integer, which carries a lot of information, but is difficult to compute in practice. In this survey, we discuss a conjectural way for computing the $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a variety in terms of the $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of the variety itself formulated using the theory of power structures. We discuss evidence towards the conjecture so far, techniques to approach it, and applications.

Compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of cellular varieties

The compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic, introduced by Hoyois and later refined by Levine and others, is an anologue in motivic homotopy theory of the classical Euler characteristic of complex topological manifolds. It is an invariant on the Grothendieck ring of varieties $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Var}_k)$ taking values in the Grothendieck-Witt ring $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ of the base field $k$. The former ring has a natural power structure induced by symmetric powers of varieties. In a recent preprint, Pajwani and Pál construct a power structure on $\mathrm{GW}(k)$ and show that the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects these two power structures for $0$-dimensional varieties, or equivalently étale $k$-algebras. In this paper, we define the class $\mathrm{Sym}_k$ of symmetrisable varieties to be those varieties for which the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic respects the power structures and study the algebraic properties of $\mathrm{K}_0(\mathrm{Sym}_k)$. We show that it includes all cellular varieties, and even linear varieties as introduced by Totaro. Moreover, we show that it includes non-linear varieties such as elliptic curves. As an application of our main result, we compute the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristics of symmetric powers of Grassmannians and certain del Pezzo surfaces.

Quadratic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$ and some other smooth proper toric threefolds

Using virtual localization in Witt sheaf cohomology, we show that the generating series of quadratic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$, valued in the Witt ring of $\mathbb{R}$, $W(\mathbb{R})\cong \mathbb{Z}$, is equal to $M(q^2)^{-8}$, where $M(q)$ is the MacMahon function. This confirms a modified version of a conjecture of Viergever. We also show that a localized version of this conjecture holds for certain iterated blow-ups of $(\mathbb{P}^1)^3$ and other related smooth proper toric varieties.

Quadratic Euler Characteristic of Symmetric Powers of Curves

We compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of the symmetric powers of a smooth, projective curve over any field $k$ that is not of characteristic two, using the Motivic Gauss-Bonnet Theorem of Levine-Raksit. As an application, we show over a field of characteristic zero that the power structure on the Grothendieck-Witt ring introduced by Pajwani-Pál computes the compactly supported $\mathbb{A}^1$-Euler characteristic of symmetric powers for all curves.

Low degree motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the three-dimensional projective space

Levine has constructed motivic analogues of virtual fundamental classes, living in cohomology of Witt sheaves. We use this to define motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants $\tilde{I}_n$ for $\mathbb{P}^3$ over $\mathbb{R}$. We show that for $n$ odd, $\tilde{I}_n = 0$ and we compute $\tilde{I}_2 = 10, \tilde{I}_4 = 25$ and $\tilde{I}_6 = -50$. We then make a conjecture about the general case, which could be a motivic analogue of a classical theorem of Maulik-Nekrasov-Okounkov-Pandharipande. The results presented here also form a chapter in the authors thesis, which was submitted on May 30'th, 2023.

The quadratic Euler characteristic of a smooth projective same-degree complete intersection

We find an algorithm to compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of a smooth projective complete intersection of hypersurfaces of the same degree. As an example, we compute the quadratic Euler characteristic of a smooth projective complete intersection of two generalized Fermat hypersurfaces. The results presented here also form a chapter in the author's thesis, which was submitted on May 30'th, 2023.
