Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz Law for ultracold atomic gases

We study energy and particle transport for one-dimensional strongly interacting bosons through a single channel connecting two atomic reservoirs. We show the emergence of particle- and energy- current separation, leading to the violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law. As a consequence, we predict different time scales for the equilibration of temperature and particle imbalances between the reservoirs. Going beyond the linear spectrum approximation, we show the emergence of ther- moelectric effects, which could be controlled by either tuning interactions or the temperature. Our results describe in a unified picture fermions in condensed matter devices and bosons in ultracold atom setups. We conclude discussing the effects of a controllable disorder.

Structural transitions of nearly second order in classical dipolar gases

Particles with repulsive power-law interactions undergo a transition from a single to a double chain (zigzag) by decreasing the confinement in the transverse direction. We theoretically characterize this transition when the particles are classical dipoles, polarized perpendicularly to the plane in which the motion occurs, and argue that this transition is of first order, even though weakly. The nature of the transition is determined by the coupling between transverse and axial modes of the chain and contrasts with the behaviour found in Coulomb systems, where the linear-zigzag transition is continuous and belongs to the universality class of the ferromagnetic transition. Our results hold for classical systems with power-law interactions $1/r^α$ when $α> 2$, and show that structural transitions in dipolar systems and Rydberg atoms can offer the testbed for simulating the critical behaviour of magnets with lattice coupling.

Optimal Persistent Currents for Interacting Bosons on a Ring with a Gauge Field

We study persistent currents for interacting one-dimensional bosons on a tight ring trap, subjected to a rotating barrier potential, which induces an artificial U(1) gauge field. We show that, at intermediate interactions, the persistent current response is maximal, due to a subtle interplay of effects due to the barrier, the interaction and quantum fluctuations. These results are relevant for ongoing experiments with ultracold atomic gases on mesoscopic rings.

Effect of one-, two-, and three-body atom loss processes on superpositions of phase states in Bose-Josephson junctions

In a two-mode Bose-Josephson junction formed by a binary mixture of ultracold atoms, macroscopic superpositions of phase states are produced during the time evolution after a sudden quench to zero of the coupling amplitude. Using quantum trajectories and an exact diagonalization of the master equation, we study the effect of one-, two-, and three-body atom losses on the superpositions by analyzing separately the amount of quantum correlations in each subspace with fixed atom number. The quantum correlations useful for atom interferometry are estimated using the quantum Fisher information. We identify the choice of parameters leading to the largest Fisher information, thereby showing that, for all kinds of loss processes, quantum correlations can be partially protected from decoherence when the losses are strongly asymmetric in the two modes.

Macroscopic superpositions in Bose-Josephson junctions: Controlling decoherence due to atom losses

We study how macroscopic superpositions of coherent states produced by the nondissipative dynamics of binary mixtures of ultracold atoms are affected by atom losses. We identify different decoherence scenarios for symmetric or asymmetric loss rates and interaction energies in the two modes. In the symmetric case the quantum coherence in the superposition is lost after a single loss event. By tuning appropriately the energies we show that the superposition can be protected, leading to quantum correlations useful for atom interferometry even after many loss events.

Polar bosons in one-dimensional disordered optical lattices

We analyze the effects of disorder and quasi-disorder on the ground-state properties of ultra-cold polar bosons in optical lattices. We show that the interplay between disorder and inter-site interactions leads to rich phase diagrams. A uniform disorder leads to a Haldane-insulator phase with finite parity order, whereas the density-wave phase becomes a Bose-glass at very weak disorder. For quasi-disorder, the Haldane insulator connects with a gapped generalized incommesurate density wave without an intermediate critical region.

Long range correlations in a 97% excitonic one-dimensional polariton condensate

We report on the realization of an out-of-equilibrium polariton condensate under pulsed excitation in a one-dimensional geometry. We observe macroscopic occupation of a polaritonic mode with only 3% photonic fraction, and a nature strikingly close to that of a bare exciton condensate. With the help of this tiny photonic fraction, the condensate is found to display first-order coherence over distances as large as 10 microns. Based on a driven-dissipative mean field model, we find that the correlations length is limited by the effects of a shallow disorder under non-equilibrium conditions.

Bragg spectroscopy of clean and disordered lattice bosons in one dimension: a spectral fingerprint of the Bose glass

We study the dynamic structure factor of a one-dimensional Bose gas confined in an optical lattice and modeled by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, using a variety of numerical and analytical approaches. The dynamic structure factor, experimentally measurable by Bragg spectroscopy, is studied in three relevant cases: in the clean regime, featuring either a superfluid or a Mott phase; and in the presence of two types of (quasi-)disordered external potentials: a quasi-periodic potential obtained from a bichromatic superlattice and a random-box disorder - both featuring a Bose glass phase. In the clean case, we show the emergence of a gapped doublon mode (corresponding to a repulsively bound state) for incommensurate filling, well separated from the low-energy acoustic mode. In the disordered case, we show that the dynamic structure factor provides a direct insight into the spatial structure of the excitations, unveiling their localized nature, which represents a fundamental signature of the Bose glass phase. Furthermore, it provides a clear fingerprint of the very nature of the localization mechanism which differs for the two kinds of disorder potentials we consider. In special cases, the dynamic structure factor may provide an estimate of the position of the localization transition from superfluid to Bose glass, in a complementary manner to the information deduced from the momentum distribution.

Universal contact for a Tonks-Girardeau gas at finite temperature

We determine the finite-temperature momentum distribution of a strongly interacting 1D Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau (impenetrable-boson) limit under harmonic confinement, and explore its universal properties associated to the scale invariance of the model. We show that, at difference from the unitary Fermi gas in three dimensions, the weight of its large-momentum tails -- given by the Tan's contact -- increase with temperature, and calculate the high-temperature universal second contact coefficient using a virial expansion.

Exact solution for the degenerate ground-state manifold of a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture

We present the exact solution for the many-body wavefunction of a one-dimensional mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions with equal masses and infinitely strong repulsive interactions under external confinement. Such a model displays a large degeneracy of the ground state. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping we find the solution for the whole set of ground-state wavefunctions of the degenerate manifold and we characterize them according to group-symmetry considerations. We find that the density profile and the momentum distribution depends on the symmetry of the solution. By combining the wavefunctions of the degenerate manifold with suitable symmetry and guided by the strong-coupling form of the Bethe-Ansatz solution for the homogeneous system we propose an analytic expression for the many-body wavefunction of the inhomogeneous system which well describes the ground state at finite, large and equal interactions strengths, as validated by numerical simulations.

Dynamical spin-flip susceptibility for a strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gas

The Stoner model predicts that a two-component Fermi gas at increasing repulsive interactions undergoes a ferromagnetic transition. Using the random-phase approximation we study the dynamical properties of the interacting Fermi gas. For an atomic Fermi gas under harmonic confinement we show that the transverse (spin-flip) dynamical susceptibility displays a clear signature of the ferromagnetic phase in a magnon peak emerging from the Stoner particle-hole continuum. The dynamical spin susceptibilities could be experimentally explored via spin-dependent Bragg spectroscopy.

Effect of phase noise on useful quantum correlations in Bose Josephson junctions

In a two-mode Bose Josephson junction the dynamics induced by a sudden quench of the tunnel amplitude leads to the periodic formation of entangled states. For instance, squeezed states are formed at short times and macroscopic superpositions of phase states at later times. The two modes of the junction can be viewed as the two arms of an interferometer; use of entangled states allows to perform atom interferometry beyond the classical limit. Decoherence due to the presence of noise degrades the quantum correlations between the atoms, thus reducing phase sensitivity of the interferometer. We consider the noise induced by stochastic fluctuations of the energies of the two modes of the junction. We analyze its effect on squeezed states and macroscopic superpositions and study quantitatively the amount of quantum correlations which can be used to enhance the phase sensitivity with respect to the classical limit. To this aim we compute the squeezing parameter and the quantum Fisher information during the quenched dynamics. For moderate noise intensities we show that these useful quantum correlations increase on time scales beyond the squeezing regime. This suggests multicomponent superpositions as interesting candidates for high-precision atom interferometry.

Detection of coherent superpositions of phase states by full counting statistics in a Bose Josephson junction

For a Bose Josephson junction realized with a double-well potential we propose a strategy to observe the coherent superpositions of phase states occurring during the time evolution after a sudden rise of the barrier separating the two wells. We show that their phase content can be obtained by the full-counting statistics of the spin-boson operators characterizing the junction, which could be mapped out by repeated measurements of the population imbalance after rotation of the state. This measurement can distinguish between coherent superpositions and incoherent mixtures, and can be used for a two-dimensional, tomographic reconstruction of the phase content of the state.

Dynamic response of 1D bosons in a trap

We calculate the dynamic structure factor S(q,omega) of a one-dimensional (1D) interacting Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap. The effective interaction depends on the strength of the confinement enforcing the 1D motion of atoms; interaction may be further enhanced by superimposing an optical lattice on the trap potential. In the compressible state, we find that the smooth variation of the gas density around the trap center leads to softening of the singular behavior of S(q,omega) at Lieb-1 mode compared to the behavior predicted for homogeneous 1D systems. Nevertheless, the density-averaged response remains a non-analytic function of q and omega at Lieb-1 mode in the limit of weak trap confinement. The exponent of the power-law non-analyticity is modified due to the inhomogeneity in a universal way, and thus, bears unambiguously the information about the (homogeneous) Lieb-Liniger model. A strong optical lattice causes formation of Mott phases. Deep in the Mott regime, we predict a semi-circular peak in S(q,ω) centered at the on-site repulsion energy, omega=U. Similar peaks of smaller amplitudes exist at multiples of U as well. We explain the suppression of the dynamic response with entering into the Mott regime, observed recently by D. Clement et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. v. 102, p. 155301 (2009), based on an f-sum rule for the Bose-Hubbard model.

Fermionization of a strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture in a one-dimensional harmonic trap

We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a harmonic trap. It consists of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with repulsive hard-core interactions) and of a non-interacting Fermi gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas), both species interacting through hard-core repulsive interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we determine the exact particle density profiles, momentum distributions and behaviour of the mixture under 1D expansion when opening the trap. In real space, bosons and fermions do not display any phase separation: the respective density profiles extend over the same region and they both present a number of peaks equal to the total number of particles in the trap. In momentum space the bosonic component has the typical narrow TG profile, while the fermionic component shows a broad distribution with fermionic oscillations at small momenta. Due to the large boson-fermion repulsive interactions, both the bosonic and the fermionic momentum distributions decay as $C p^{-4}$ at large momenta, like in the case of a pure bosonic TG gas. The coefficient $C$ is related to the two-body density matrix and to the bosonic concentration in the mixture. When opening the trap, both momentum distributions "fermionize" under expansion and turn into that of a Fermi gas with a particle number equal to the total number of particles in the mixture.

Superfluidity and Anderson localisation for a weakly interacting Bose gas in a quasiperiodic potential

Using exact diagonalisation and Density Matrix Renormalisation group (DMRG) approach, we analyse the transition to a localised state of a weakly interacting quasi-1D Bose gas subjected to a quasiperiodic potential. The analysis is performed by calculating the superfluid fraction, density profile, momentum distribution and visibility for different periodicities of the second lattice and in the presence (or not) of a weak repulsive interaction. It is shown that the transition is sharper towards the maximally incommensurate ratio between the two lattice periodicities, and shifted to higher values of the second lattice strength by weak repulsive interactions. We also relate our results to recent experiments.

Pairing fluctuations in trapped Fermi gases

Fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter govern the properties of superconducting systems close to the critical transition temperature. In the BCS regime we examine the contribution of these pairing fluctuations to the superfluid order parameter for harmonically confined atomic Fermi gases. In the limit of small systems we obtain an expression for the space dependence of the fluctuations, in good agreement with the results of numerical calculations. In this limit we also predict a parity effect, i.e. that pairing fluctuations should show a maximum or a minimum at the centre of the trap, depending on the value of the last occupied shell being even or odd. We finally propose to detect pairing fluctuations by measuring the density-density correlation function as evaluated after a ballistic expansion of the gas.

Shell structure in the density profiles for noninteracting fermions in anisotropic harmonic confinement

We develop a Green's function method to evaluate the exact equilibrium particle-density profiles of noninteracting Fermi gases in external harmonic confinement in any spatial dimension and for arbitrary trap anisotropy. While in a spherically symmetric configuration the shell effects are negligible in the case of large number of particles, we find that for very anisotropic traps the quantum effects due to single-level occupancy and the deviations from the Thomas-Fermi approximation are visible also for mesoscopic clouds.
