Statistics on Yau's conjecture: Variance asymptotics

We investigate the probabilistic counterpart of Yau's conjecture on the nodal volume of Laplace eigenfunctions on compact manifolds, by studying the high-frequency variance asymptotics of Riemannian random waves. We establish (Theorem A) a quantitative bound for the fluctuations of their nodal volumes, depending on different regimes of spectral windows, including the monochromatic one, of spectral size 1. Notably, our bounds improve, by more than a power 2, the existing results in the literature, cf. Canzani and Hanin (2020), in the case of manifolds without conjugate points, in particular negatively curved ones. As a corollary, we prove that Berry's cancellation phenomenon occurs for monochromatic Riemannian Random Waves on such chaotic manifolds. Our proofs rely on a local and global analysis combining the Kac-Rice formula, the new Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition of Stecconi and Todino (2025), and a sharp analysis of the error in the pointwise Weyl law associated to an arbitrary spectral window (Theorem B). We introduce a general machinery (Theorem C), which ensures variance decay under broad geometric conditions, subject to correlation decay assumptions.

Berry-Heisenberg Random Waves

We construct a new family of random fields on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$, the sub-Riemannian analog of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. These fields are generalized random eigenfunctions of the sub-Laplacian on $\mathbb{H}$, and can be viewed as the sub-Riemannian counterpart to the Berry random wave model in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. The construction of such waves relies on the representation theory of $\mathbb{H}$, and differs from the Euclidean case because of the presence of infinite-dimensional unitary irreducible representations. This work represents a first step towards studying random waves and their geometry in sub-Riemannian spaces.

New chaos decomposition of Gaussian nodal volumes

We investigate the random variable defined by the volume of the zero set of a smooth Gaussian field, on a general Riemannian manifold possibly with boundary, a fundamental object in probability and geometry. We prove a new explicit formula for its Wiener-Itô chaos decomposition that is notably simpler than existing alternatives and which holds in greater generality, without requiring the field to be compatible with the geometry of the manifold. A key advantage of our formulation is a significant reduction in the complexity of computing the variance of the nodal volume. Unlike the standard Hermite expansion, which requires evaluating the expectation of products of $2+2n$ Hermite polynomials, our approach reduces this task--in any dimension $n$--to computing the expectation of a product of just four Hermite polynomials. As a consequence, we establish a new exact formula for the variance, together with lower and upper bounds. Importantly, in contrast to previous results, our approach applies to highly non-isotropic situations, allowing the study of Riemannian random waves on arbitrary manifolds. By introducing two parameters associated to any Gaussian field: the frequency and the eccentricity, we quantify the deviation from the standard settings (e.g., spheres) and establish a quantitative version of Berry's cancellation phenomenon valid on all manifolds.

On the Euler-Poincaré Characteristic of the planar Berry's random wave: fluctuations and a perturbation study

We prove the Central Limit Theorem for the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of Berry's random wave model in a growing domain. We also show Gaussian fluctuations for a class of Berry's mixture models that correspond to a perturbation of the initial random field. Finally, some statistical applications, explicit calculations of the variance of the perturbed Berry's model and numerical investigations are provided to support our theoretical results.

Small fluctuations for time-dependent spherical random fields

We consider time-dependent space isotropic and time stationary spherical Gaussian random fields. We establish Chung's law of the iterated logarithm and solve the small probabilities problem. Our results depend on the high-frequency behaviour of the angular power spectrum: the speed of decay of the small ball probability is faster as either the memory parameter or the space-parameter decreases.

Laguerre Expansion for Nodal Volumes and Applications

We investigate the nodal volume of random hyperspherical harmonics $\lbrace T_{\ell;d}\rbrace_{\ell\in \mathbb N}$ on the $d$-dimensional unit sphere ($d\ge 2$). We exploit an orthogonal expansion in terms of Laguerre polynomials; this representation entails a drastic reduction in the computational complexity and allows to prove \emph{isotropy} for chaotic components, an issue which was left open in the previous literature. As a further application, we establish our main result, i.e., variance bounds for the nodal volume in any dimension; for $d\ge 3$ and as the eigenvalues diverge (i.e., as $\ell\to +\infty$), we obtain the upper bound $O(\ell^{-(d-2)})$ (that we conjecture to be \emph{sharp}). As a consequence, we show that the so-called Berry's cancellation phenomenon holds in any dimension: namely, the nodal variance is one order of magnitude smaller than the variance of the volume of level sets at any non-zero threshold, in the high-energy limit.

Spherical Poisson Waves

We introduce a model of Poisson random waves in $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ and we study Quantitative Central Limit Theorems when both the rate of the Poisson process and the energy (i.e., frequency) of the waves (eigenfunctions) diverge to infinity. We consider finite-dimensional distributions, harmonic coefficients and convergence in law in functional spaces, and we investigate carefully the interplay between the rates of divergence of eigenvalues and Poisson governing measures.

Fluctuations of Polyspectra in Spherical and Euclidean Random Wave Models

We consider polynomial transforms (polyspectra) of Berry's model -- the Euclidean Random Wave model -- and of Random Hyperspherical Harmonics. We determine the asymptotic behavior of variance for polyspectra of any order in the high-frequency limit. In particular, we are able to treat polyspectra of any odd order $q\geq 5$, whose asymptotic behavior was left as a conjecture in the case of Random Hyperspherical Harmonics by Marinucci and Wigman (\emph{Comm. Math. Phys.} 2014). To this end, we exploit a relation between the variance of polyspectra and the distribution of uniform random walks on Euclidean space with finitely many steps, which allows us to rely on technical results in the latter context.

No smooth Phase Transition for the Nodal Length of Band-limited Spherical Random Fields

In this paper, we investigate the variance of the nodal length for band-limited spherical random waves. When the frequency window includes a number of eigenfunctions that grows linearly, the variance of the nodal length is linear with respect to the frequency, while it is logarithmic when a single eigenfunction is considered. Then, it is natural to conjecture that there exists a smooth transition with respect to the number of eigenfunctions in the frequency window; however, we show here that the asymptotic variance is logarithmic whenever this number grows sublinearly, so that the window "shrinks". The result is achieved by exploiting the Christoffel-Darboux formula to establish the covariance function of the field and its first and second derivatives. This allows us to compute the two-point correlation function at high frequency and then to derive the asymptotic behaviour of the variance.

On the correlation between critical points and critical values for random spherical harmonics

We study the correlation between the total number of critical points of random spherical harmonics and the number of critical points with value in any interval $I \subset \mathbb{R}$. We show that the correlation is asymptotically zero, while the partial correlation, after controlling the random $L^2$-norm on the sphere of the eigenfunctions, is asymptotically one. Our findings complement the results obtained by Wigman (2012) and Marinucci and Rossi (2021) on the correlation between nodal and boundary length of random spherical harmonics.

Flexible-bandwidth Needlets

We investigate here a generalized construction of spherical wavelets/needlets which admits extra-flexibility in the harmonic domain, i.e., it allows the corresponding support in multipole (frequency) space to vary in more general forms than in the standard constructions. We study the analytic properties of this system and we investigate its behaviour when applied to isotropic random fields: more precisely, we establish asymptotic localization and uncorrelation properties (in the high-frequency sense) under broader assumptions than typically considered in the literature.

Asymptotic Behaviour of Level Sets of Needlet Random Fields

We consider sequences of needlet random fields defined as weighted averaged forms of spherical Gaussian eigenfunctions. Our main result is a Central Limit Theorem in the high energy setting, for the boundary lengths of their excursion sets. This result is based on Stein-Malliavin techniques and Wiener chaos expansion for nonlinear functionals of random fields. To this end, a careful analysis of the variances of each chaotic component of the boundary length is carried out, showing that they are asymptotically constant, after normalisation, for all terms of the expansion and no leading component arises.

Limiting Behavior for the Excursion Area of Band-Limited Spherical Random Fields

In this paper, we investigate some geometric functionals for band limited Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields in dimension 2. In particular, we focus on the area of excursion sets, providing its behavior in the high energy limit. Our result is based on Wiener chaos expansion for non linear transform of Gaussian fields and on an explicit derivation on the high-frequency limit of the covariance function of the field. As a simple corollary we establish also the Central Limit Theorem for the excursion area.

Moderate Deviation estimates for Nodal Lengths of Random Spherical Harmonics

We prove Moderate Deviation estimates for nodal lengths of random spherical harmonics both on the whole sphere and on shrinking spherical domains. Central Limit Theorems for the latter were recently established in Marinucci, Rossi and Wigman (2020) and Todino (2020) respectively. Our proofs are based on the combination of a Moderate Deviation Principle by Schulte and Thäle (2016) for sequences of random variables living in a fixed Wiener chaos with a well-known result based on the concept of exponential equivalence.

Nodal Lengths in Shrinking Domains for Random Eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{S}^2$

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the nodal lines for random spherical harmonics restricted to shrinking domains, in the 2-dimensional case: i.e., the length of the zero set $\mathcal{Z}_{\ell,r_\ell} := \mathcal{Z}^{B_{r_{\ell}}}(T_\ell)=\text{len}(\{x \in \mathbb{S}^2 \cap B_{r_\ell}: T_\ell(x)=0 \})$, where $B_{r_{\ell}}$ is the spherical cap of radius $r_\ell$. We show that the variance of the nodal length is logarithmic in the high energy limit; moreover, it is asymptotically fully equivalent, in the $L^2$-sense, to the "local sample trispectrum", namely, the integral on the ball of the fourth-order Hermite polynomial. This result extends and generalizes some recent findings for the full spherical case. As a consequence a Central Limit Theorem is established.

A Quantitative Central Limit Theorem for the Excursion Area of Random Spherical Harmonics over Subdomains of $\mathbb{S}^2$

In recent years, considerable interest has been drawn by the analysis of geometric functionals for the excursion sets of random eigenfunctions on the unit sphere (spherical harmonics). In this paper, we extend those results to proper subsets of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, i.e., spherical caps, focussing in particular on the excursion area. Precisely, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the excursion area is dominated by the so-called second-order chaos component, and we exploit this result to establish a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem, in the high energy limit. These results generalize analogous findings for the full sphere; their proofs, however, requires more sophisticated techniques, in particular a careful analysis (of some independent interest) for smooth approximations of the indicator function for spherical caps subsets.

A Numerical Investigation on the High-Frequency Geometry of Spherical Random Eigenfunctions

A lot of attention has been drawn over the last few years by the investigation of the geometry of spherical random eigenfunctions (random spherical harmonics) in the high frequency regime, i.e ., for diverging eigenvalues. In this paper, we present a review of these results and we collect for the first time a comprehensive numerical investigation, focussing on particular on the behaviour of Lipschitz-Killing curvatures/Minkowski functionals (i.e., the area, the boundary length and the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of excursion sets) and on critical points. We show in particular that very accurate analytic predictions exist for their expected values and variances, for the correlation among these functionals, and for the cancellation that occurs for some specific thresholds (the variances becoming an order of magnitude smaller - the so-called Berry's cancellation phenomenon). Most of these functionals can be used for important statistical applications, for instance in connection to the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background data.
