Bernoulli principle in ferroelectrics

Ferroelectric materials, characterized by spontaneous electric polarization, exhibit remarkable parallels with fluid dynamics, where polarization flux behaves similarly to fluid flow. Understanding polarization distribution in confined geometries at the nanoscale is crucial for both fundamental physics and technological applications. Here, we show that the classical Bernoulli principle, which describes the conservation of the energy flux along velocity streamlines in a moving fluid, can be extended to the conservation of polarization flux in ferroelectric nanorods with varying cross-sectional areas. Geometric constrictions lead to an increase in polarization, resembling fluid acceleration in a narrowing pipe, while expansions cause a decrease. Beyond a critical expansion, phase separation occurs, giving rise to topological polarization structures such as polarization bubbles, curls and Hopfions. This effect extends to soft ferroelectrics, including ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals, where polarization flux conservation governs the formation of complex mesoscale states.

Multiferroic Properties of Electrospun CFO-BCTSn Nanocomposites for Magnetoelectric and Magnetic Field Sensing Applications

Multiferroic CFO-BCTSn composite nanofibers were synthesized using a sol-gel electrospinning method. Electron microscopy revealed well-defined fibers with diameters of 120-150 nm. Structural analyses using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the coexistence of the spinel CFO phase and the perovskite BCTSn phase without detectable secondary phases. Magnetic hysteresis measurements demonstrated the magnetic behavior of the nanofibers, while piezoresponse force microscopy confirmed their piezoelectric properties. Magnetoelectric coupling was evidenced by differences between the magnetic hysteresis loops of electrically poled and unpoled samples. These lead-free composite nanofibers show potential for nanoscale magnetoelectric devices and magnetic field sensing applications.

Morphology of Polarization States in Strained Ferroelectric Films

Ferroelectric thin films under epitaxial strain exhibit a variety of vortex-like topological polarization textures. To analyze them, we build on the Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire framework and extend the previously introduced soft-domain approach. This formulation provides a compact variational theoretical description of polarization morphologies in strained PbTiO$_3$ films. It yields phase diagrams as a function of temperature, strain, and thickness, and clarifies the morphological structure of emergent topological states. The method is computationally efficient and offers practical guidance for experimental studies of ferroelectric nanostructures.

Topological ferroelectric chirality

Chirality, an inherent property of most objects of the universe, is a dynamic research topic in material science, physics, chemistry, and biology. The fundamental appeal of this extensive study is supported by the technological quest to manufacture materials with configurable chiralities for emerging applications ranging from optoelectronics and photonics to pharmaceutics and medicine. Recent advances put forth ferroelectrics as a host of chiral topological states in the form of Bloch domain walls, skyrmions, merons, and Hopfions, offering thus a unique ground for making chirality switchable and tunable. Here we review current developments, milestones achieved, and future routes of chiral ferroelectric materials. We focus on insights into the topological origin of the chirality in the nanostructured ferroelectrics, bringing new controllable functionalities. We pay special attention to novel developments enabling tunability and manipulating the chiroptical response and enantioselectivity, leading to new applications in nano-optoelectronics, plasmonics, pharmaceutics, and bio-medical industries.

Impact of Polymeric precursor and Auto-combustion on the Structural, Microstructural, Magnetic, and Magnetocaloric Properties of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3

In this work, La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSMO) nanopowders are synthesized using two different methods: Pechini (LSMO-PC) and auto-combustion (LSMO-AC). Nanoparticle sizes, structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties were determined and compared. The X-ray diffraction confirms the coexistence of two phases; rhombohedral symmetry with space group R-3c and orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbnm, with the rhombohedral phase dominating. The scanning electron microscope images show that LSMO-PC has larger nanoparticle sizes (~495 nm) than LSMO-AC (~195 nm). The samples exhibit ferromagnetic properties with distinct hysteresis loops and Curie temperatures 340 K and 290 K for LSMO-PC and LSMO-AC respectively. The variation of the magnetic entropy was measured indirectly using the Maxwell approach with increasing magnetic field. For LSMO-PC it reaches a maximum -dSM=1.69 J/kg.K at 340 K and dH= 5 T. The associated adiabatic temperature change dTM is 1.04 K. While LSMO-PC demonstrates superior magnetic and magnetocaloric properties, LSMO-AC displays significant magnetocaloric thermal stability. The obtained values make LSMO-PC and LSMO-AC promising candidates for eco-friendly room-temperature magnetocaloric applications.

Vortex states in a PbTiO$_3$ ferroelectric cylinder

The past decade's discovery of topological excitations in nanoscale ferroelectrics has turned the prevailing view that the polar ground state in these materials is uniform. However, the systematic understanding of the topological polar structures in ferroelectrics is still on track. Here we study stable vortex-like textures of polarization in the nanocylinders of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$, arising due to the competition of the elastic and electrostatic interactions. Using the phase-field numerical modeling and analytical calculations, we show that the orientation of the vortex core with respect to the cylinder axis is tuned by the geometrical parameters and temperature of the system.

Enhanced electrocaloric and energy-storage properties of environment-friendly ferroelectric Ba0.9Sr0.1Ti1-xSnxO3 ceramics

The electrocaloric (EC) effect and energy storage properties of eco-friendly ferroelectric Ba0.9Sr0.1Ti1-xSnxO3 (BSTS-x) ceramics prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method were studied. Significant energy efficiency exceeding 80% was found in our samples. In particular, BSTS-5 and BSTS-10 samples exhibit 92% and 88% efficiency, respectively, over a wide temperature range around room temperature (RT). Direct EC measurement and an indirect method based on the thermodynamic approach were used to characterize the EC effect, and both yielded consistent results. The largest electrocaloric responsivity of 0.73 K mm/kV was obtained for BSTS-0 at 368 K with an adiabatic temperature change DT(EC) of 0.55 K at a low applied electric field of only 7.4 kV/cm. With increasing Sn-content, the EC response of BSTS-x ceramics decreases, while their diffuseness increases over an extensive temperature range, centered at RT. A significant coefficient of performance (COP > 26) was found for our samples. The obtained results demonstrate the possibility of designing eco-friendly materials with higher EC effect and energy efficiency for potential solid-state refrigeration and energy storage devices.

High Energy Storage Efficiency and Large Electrocaloric Effect in Lead-Free BaTi0.89Sn0.11O3 Ceramic

Lead-free BaTi0.89Sn0.11O3 (BTSn) ceramic was elaborated via a solid-state reaction method and its dielectric, ferroelectric, energy storage, electromechanical as well as electrocaloric properties were investigated at 25 kV/cm. Pure perovskite structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The maximum of the dielectric constant was found to be 17390 at 41 °C. The enhanced total energy density, the recovered energy density, and the energy storage efficiency of 92.7 mJ/cm3, 84.4 mJ/cm3, and 91.04%, respectively, were observed at 60 °C, whereas the highest storage efficiency of 95.87 % was obtained at 100 °C. At room temperature, the electromechanical strain and the large-signal piezoelectric coefficient reached a maximum of 0.07 % and 280 pm/V. The large electrocaloric effect of 0.71 K and the electrocaloric responsivity of 0.28. 10-6 K.mm/kV at 49 °C under 25 kV/cm were indirectly calculated via Maxwell relation from the ferroelectric polarization P (T, E) that was determined from the P-E hysteresis loops. By exploiting the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological theory, the electrocaloric response was estimated to be of 0.61 K at 50 °C under 25 kV/cm. We conclude that BTSn lead-free ceramic is a promising candidate for potential applications in high-efficiency energy storage devices and solid-state refrigeration technology.

Dynamics of Field Induced Polarization Reversal in Strained Perovskite Ferroelectric Films with c-oriented Polarization

The field-induced polarization reversal in $c$-oriented ferroelectric phase of strained perovskite film has been studied. We show that in additional to the conventional longitudinal switching mechanism, when c-oriented polarization vector changes its modulus, the longitudinal-transversal and transversal mechanisms when the perpendicular component of polarization is dynamically admixed are possible. The later process can occurs either via the straight-abrupt or initially-continues polarization turnover scenario. We specified the obtained results for the case of PbTiO$_{3}$ and BaTiO$_{3}$ ferroelectrics and propose the experimental methods for their investigation.
