Existence of uniform Temple charts and applications to null distance

In this paper, we prove that Temple's cylindrical future null coordinate charts can be constructed uniformly and we estimate the gradients of their optical functions. We then apply these charts to study a spacetime $(N,g)$ that has been converted into a definite metric space $(N,\hat{d}_τ)$, where $\hat{d}_τ$ is the null distance of Sormani and Vega defined using a weak temporal function $τ$. In particular, we prove that $(N, \hat{d}_τ)$ is a rectifiable metric space, where the causal structure is locally encoded by $τ$ and $\hat{d}_τ$. As a consequence, applying a classical theorem of Hawking and following a technique developed by Sakovich and Sormani, we can prove a Lorentzian isometry theorem, generalizing our earlier result.

Introducing Various Notions of Distances between Space-Times

We introduce the notion of causally-null-compactifiable space-times which can be canonically converted into a compact timed-metric-spaces using the cosmological time of Andersson-Howard-Galloway and the null distance of Sormani-Vega. We produce a large class of such space-times including future developments of compact initial data sets and regions which exhaust asymptotically flat space-times. We then present various notions of intrinsic distances between these space-times (introducing the timed-Hausdorff distance) and prove some of these notions of distance are definite in the sense that they equal zero iff there is a time-oriented Lorentzian isometry between the space-times. These definite distances enable us to define various notions of convergence of space-times to limit space-times which are not necessarily smooth. Many open questions and conjectures are included throughout.

A definition of the mass aspect function for weakly regular asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

In contrast to the well-known and unambiguous notion of ADM mass for asymptotically Euclidean manifolds, the notion of mass for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds admits several interpretations. Historically, there are two approaches to defining the mass in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting: the mass aspect function of Wang defined on the conformal boundary at infinity, and the mass functional of Chruściel and Herzlich which may be thought of as the closest asymptotically hyperbolic analogue of the ADM mass. In this paper we unify these two approaches by introducing an ADM-style definition of the mass aspect function that applies to a broad range of asymptotics and in very low regularity. Additionally, we show that the mass aspect function can be computed using the Ricci tensor. Finally, we demonstrate that this function exhibits favorable covariance properties under changes of charts at infinity, which includes a proof of the asymptotic rigidity of hyperbolic space in the context of weakly regular metrics.

A density theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic initial data satisfying the dominant energy condition

When working with asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets for general relativity it is convenient to assume certain simplifying properties. We prove that the subset of initial data sets with such properties is dense in the set of physically reasonable asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets. More specifically, we show that an asymptotically hyperbolic initial data set with non-negative local energy density can be approximated by an initial data set with strictly positive local energy density and a simple structure at infinity, while changing the mass arbitrarily little. This is achieved by suitably modifying the argument used by Eichmair, Huang, Lee and Schoen in the asymptotically Euclidean case.

On center of mass and foliations by constant spacetime mean curvature surfaces for isolated systems in General Relativity

We propose a new foliation of asymptotically Euclidean initial data sets by 2-spheres of constant spacetime mean curvature (STCMC). The leaves of the foliation have the STCMC-property regardless of the initial data set in which the foliation is constructed which asserts that there is a plethora of STCMC 2-spheres in a neighborhood of spatial infinity of any asymptotically flat spacetime. The STCMC-foliation can be understood as a covariant relativistic generalization of the CMC-foliation suggested by Huisken and Yau. We show that a unique STCMC-foliation exists near infinity of any asymptotically Euclidean initial data set with non-vanishing energy which allows for the definition of a new notion of total center of mass for isolated systems. This STCMC-center of mass transforms equivariantly under the asymptotic Poincaré group of the ambient spacetime and in particular evolves under the Einstein evolution equations like a point particle in Special Relativity. The new definition also remedies subtle deficiencies in the CMC-approach to defining the total center of mass suggested by Huisken and Yau which were described by Cederbaum and Nerz.

On the center of mass of asymptotically hyperbolic initial data sets

We define the (total) center of mass for suitably asymptotically hyperbolic time-slices of asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in general relativity. We do so in analogy to the picture that has been consolidated for the (total) center of mass of suitably asymptotically Euclidean time-slices of asymptotically Minkowskian spacetimes (isolated systems). In particular, we unite -- an altered version of -- the approach based on Hamiltonian charges with an approach based on CMC-foliations near infinity. The newly defined center of mass transforms appropriately under changes of the asymptotic coordinates and evolves in the direction of an appropriately defined linear momentum under the Einstein evolution equations.

Asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with small mass

For asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds of dimension $n$ with scalar curvature at least equal to $-n(n-1)$ the conjectured positive mass theorem states that the mass is non-negative, and vanishes only if the manifold is isometric to hyperbolic space. In this paper we study asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds which are also conformally hyperbolic outside a ball of fixed radius, and for which the positive mass theorem holds. For such manifolds we show that the conformal factor tends to one as the mass tends to zero.

Penrose type inequalities for asymptotically hyperbolic graphs

In this paper we study asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds given as graphs of asymptotically constant functions over hyperbolic space $\bH^n$. The graphs are considered as subsets of $\bH^{n+1}$ and carry the induced metric. For such manifolds the scalar curvature appears in the divergence of a 1-form involving the integrand for the asymptotically hyperbolic mass. Integrating this divergence we estimate the mass by an integral over an inner boundary. In case the inner boundary satisfies a convexity condition this can in turn be estimated in terms of the area of the inner boundary. The resulting estimates are similar to the conjectured Penrose inequality for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The work presented here is inspired by Lam's article concerning the asymptotically Euclidean case.

A large class of non constant mean curvature solutions of the Einstein constraint equations on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold

We construct solutions of the constraint equation with non constant mean curvature on an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold by the conformal method. Our approach consists in decreasing a certain exponent appearing in the equations, constructing solutions of these sub-critical equations and then in letting the exponent tend to its true value. We prove that the solutions of the sub-critical equations remain bounded which yields solutions of the constraint equation unless a certain limit equation admits a non-trivial solution. Finally, we give conditions which ensure that the limit equation admits no non-trivial solution.

Harmonic morphisms from the classical non-compact semisimple Lie groups

We construct the first known complex valued harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups SL(n,R), SU*(2n) and Sp(n,R) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We then introduce the notion of a bi-eigenfamily and employ this to construct the first known solutions on the non-compact Riemannian SO*(2n), SO(p,q), SU(p,q) and Sp(p,q). Applying a duality principle we then show how to manufacture the first known complex valued harmonic morphisms from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with semi-Riemannian metrics.

Harmonic morphisms from the classical compact semisimple Lie groups

In this paper we introduce a new method for manufacturing harmonic morphisms from semi-Riemannian manifolds. This is employed to yield a variety of new examples from the compact Lie groups SO(n), SU(n) and Sp(n) equipped with their standard Riemannian metrics. We develop a duality principle and show how this can be used to construct the first known examples of harmonic morphisms from the non-compact Lie groups SL(n,R), SU(2n), Sp(n,R), SO(2n), SO(p,q), SU(p,q) and Sp(p,q) equipped with their standard dual semi-Riemannian metrics.

Invariant metric $f$-structures on specific homogeneous reductive spaces

For homogeneous reductive spaces G/H with reductive complements decomposable into an orthogonal sum \mathfrak{m}=\mathfrak{m}_1 \oplus \mathfrak{m}_2 \oplus \mathfrak{m}_3 of three Ad(H)-invariant irreducible mutually inequivalent submodules we establish simple conditions under which an invariant metric f-structure (f,g) belongs to the classes G_1 f, NKf, and Kill f of generalized Hermitian geometry. The statements obtained are then illustrated with four examples. Namely we consider invariant metric f-structures on the manifolds of oriented flags SO(n)/SO(2)\times SO(n-3) (n>=4), the Stiefel manifold SO(4)/SO(2), the complex flag manifold SU(3)/T_{max}, and the quaternionic flag manifold Sp(3)/SU(2)\times SU(2)\times SU(2).

We consider manifolds of oriented flags SO(n)/SO(2)xSO(n-3) (n>=4) as 4- and 6-symmetric spaces and indicate characteristic conditions for invariant Riemannian metrics under which the canonical f-structures on these homogeneous $Φ$-spaces belong to the classes Kill f, NKf and G_1f of generalized Hermitian geometry.
