Sharp partial regularity of Hamiltonian stationary and special Lagrangian graphs

We prove a sharp partial regularity result for Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian Lipschitz submanifolds in arbitrary smooth almost Kähler manifolds: every weak solution of the corresponding equation is smooth away from a relatively closed singular set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-5$. We show that the estimate is optimal by constructing a nonzero two-homogeneous viscosity solution \[ U\in C^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^5)\setminus C^2(\mathbb{R}^5) \] of the phase-zero special Lagrangian equation, whose level sets on $\mathbb{S}^4$ are the leaves of Cartan's isoparametric foliation. Its gradient graph is a non-flat calibrated cone, real analytic away from the vertex. This also gives the first $C^{1,1}$ but non-$C^2$ solution of the special Lagrangian equation, and shows that the same dimensional estimate is sharp in the case of special Lagrangian graphs.

On the geometric properties of multi-operator two-phase elliptic measure

We provide a structural characterization of a given boundary using two-phase elliptic measure in a multi-operator setting, extending to this novel setting results of Kenig, Preiss & Toro, Toro & Zhao and Azzam & Mourgoglou, including the validity of Oksendal's conjecture for two-sided NTA domains under the assumption of mutual absolute continuity of the elliptic measures. Our techniques rely on a reduction to a multi-operator two-phase free-boundary problem combined with an extension of the powerful tools introduced by Preiss in his Density Theorem.

Minimizing clusters with prescribed asymptotic geometry

We construct locally minimizing $(1,2)$-clusters whose exterior interfaces are asymptotic to various prescribed singular area-minimizing cones. For $n+1 \leq 7$, Bronsard & Novack characterized all minimizing $(1,2)$-clusters as standard lenses, whose exterior interface is planar. For $n+1 \in [8,2700]$, the authors together with Bronsard showed the existence of a locally minimizing $(1,2)$-cluster whose exterior interface blows down to some (unknown, possibly non-unique) singular area-minimizing hypercone. For $n+1=8$, this was shown independently by Novaga, Paolini & Tortorelli. Here we develop a refined construction using the Hardt-Simon foliation that realizes prescribed cones. For a singular area-minimizing hypercone $C$ that has an isolated singularity or is cylindrical, we show that if $C$ satisfies an explicit energy bound, then there is a locally minimizing $(1,2)$-cluster whose exterior interface is asymptotic to $C$ with quantitative rates. In fact, if $C$ is an area minimizing Lawson cone satisfying this energy bound, we produce a countably infinite family of distinct locally minimizing clusters asymptotic to $C$, distinguished by their prescribed asymptotic decay to leading order. We verify this energy bound for the generalized Simons cones $C_{k,k}$ in every even ambient dimension $n+1 = 2k+2\geq 8$, and for the cylindrical cone $C_{3,3}\times\mathbb{R}$ in $\mathbb{R}^9$, where $C_{3,3}$ is the Simons cone, therefore answering the cone realization problem in these cases. This in particular removes the upper bound of 2700 on the ambient dimension when $n+1$ is even in our preceding work.

Free boundary regularity for semilinear variational problems with a topological constraint

We study a class of semilinear free boundary problems in which admissible functions $u$ have a topological constraint, or spanning condition, on their 1-level set. This constraint forces $\{u=1\}$, which is the free boundary, to behave like a surface with some special types of singularities attached to a fixed boundary frame, in the spirit of the Plateau problem \cite{HP16}. Two such free boundary problems are the minimization of capacity among surfaces sharing a common boundary and an Allen-Cahn formulation of the Plateau problem. We establish the existence of minimizers and study their regularity properties, obtaining the optimal Lipschitz regularity of minimizers and analytic regularity for the free boundaries away from a codimension two singular set. The singularity models for these problems are given by conical critical points of the minimal capacity problem, which are closely related to spectral optimal partition and segregation problems.

On the non-uniqueness of locally minimizing clusters via singular cones

We construct partitions of $\mathbb{R}^n$ into three sets $\{\mathscr{X}(1),\mathscr{X}(2),\mathscr{X}(3)\}$ that locally minimize interfacial area among compactly supported volume preserving variations and that blow down at infinity to singular area-minimizing cones. As a consequence, we prove the non-uniqueness of the standard lens cluster in a large number of dimensions starting from $8$.

Structure of two-dimensional mod$(q)$ area-minimizing currents near flat singularities: the codimension one case

We obtain a fine structural result for two-dimensional mod$(q)$ area-minimizing currents of codimension one, close to flat singularities. Precisely, we show that, locally around any such singularity, the current is a $C^{1,α}$-perturbation of the graph of a radially homogeneous special multiple-valued function that arises from a superposition of homogeneous harmonic polynomials. Additionally, as a preliminary step towards an analogous result in arbitrary codimension, we prove in general that the set of flat singularities of density $\frac{q}{2}$, where the current is ``genuinely mod$(q)$", consists of isolated points.

Hausdorff measure bounds for density-$Q$ flat singularities of minimizing integral currents

In this article we prove that the set of flat singular points of locally highest density of area-minimizing integral currents of dimension $m$ and general codimension in a smooth Riemannian manifold $Σ$ has locally finite $(m-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. In fact, the set of such flat singular points can be split into a union of two sets, one of which we show is locally $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-negligible, while for the other we obtain local $(m-2)$-dimensional Minkowski content bounds.

The fine structure of the singular set of area-minimizing integral currents I: the singularity degree of flat singular points

We consider an area-minimizing integral current of dimension $m$ and codimension at least $2$ and fix an arbitrary interior singular point $q$ where at least one tangent cone is flat. For any vanishing sequence of scales around $q$ along which the rescaled currents converge to a flat cone, we define a suitable singularity degree of the rescalings, which is a real number bigger than or equal to $1$. We show that this number is independent of the chosen sequence and we prove several interesting properties linked to its value. Our study prepares the ground for two companion works, where we show that the singular set is $(m-2)$-rectifiable and the tangent cone is unique at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. point.

Variational integrals on Hessian spaces: partial regularity for critical points

We develop regularity theory for critical points of variational integrals defined on Hessian spaces of functions on open, bounded subdomains of $\mathbb{R}^n$, under compactly supported variations. The critical point solves a fourth order nonlinear equation in double divergence form. We show that for smooth convex functionals, a $W^{2,\infty}$ critical point with bounded Hessian is smooth provided that its Hessian has a small bounded mean oscillation (BMO). We deduce that the interior singular set of a critical point has Hausdorff dimension at most $n-p_0$, for some $p_0 \in (2,3)$. We state some applications of our results to variational problems in Lagrangian geometry. Finally, we use the Hamiltonian stationary equation to demonstrate the importance of our assumption on the a priori regularity of the critical point.

A look into some of the fine properties of functions with bounded $\mathscr A$-variation

We establish certain fine properties for functions of bounded $\mathscr A$-variation known in the classical $BV$ setting. Here, $\mathscr A$ is a $k$th order constant-coefficient homogeneous linear differential operator with a finite-dimensional kernel (also known as a complex-elliptic operator). We prove that if $\mathscr Au$ can be represented by a finite Radon measure, then the potential $u$ has one-sided $L^p$-approximate limits on Lipschitz hypersurfaces, and, more generally, on countably rectifiable sets of codimension one. We use this to give pointwise characterizations of the (functional) interior and exterior traces. We also establish a quantitative scale-dependent continuity result, which allows us to prove that the Lebesgue discontinuity set has zero $(n-1)$-dimensional Riesz capacity. Lastly, we introduce a decomposition that reduces the complexity of analyzing $k$th-order operators to that of first-order methods and allows us to establish the $k$th order $L^p$-differentiability of $BV^{\mathscr A}$ maps.

Rectifiability of the singular set and uniqueness of tangent cones for semicalibrated currents

We prove that the singular set of an $m$-dimensional integral current $T$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n + m}$, semicalibrated by a $C^{2, κ_0}$ $m$-form $ω$ is countably $(m - 2)$-rectifiable. Furthermore, we show that there is a unique tangent cone at $\mathcal{H}^{m - 2}$-a.e. point in the interior singular set of $T$. Our proof adapts techniques that were recently developed in [DLS23a, DLS23b, DLMS23] for area-minimizing currents to this setting.

The fine structure of the singular set of area-minimizing integral currents II: rectifiability of flat singular points with singularity degree larger than $1$

We consider an area-minimizing integral current $T$ of codimension higher than $1$ in a smooth Riemannian manifold $Σ$. In a previous paper we have subdivided the set of interior singular points with at least one flat tangent cone according to a real parameter, which we refer to as ``singularity degree''. This parameter determines the infinitesimal order of contact at the point in question between the ``singular part'' of $T$ and its ``best regular approximation''. In this paper we show that the set of points for which the singularity degree is strictly larger than $1$, is $(m-2)$-rectifiable. In a subsequent work we prove that the remaining flat singular points form an $(m-2)$-null set, thus concluding that the singular set of $T$ is $m-2$-rectifiable.

Fine Structure of Singularities in Area-Minimizing Currents Mod$(q)$

We study fine structural properties related to the interior regularity of $m$-dimensional area minimizing currents mod$(q)$ in arbitrary codimension. We show: (i) the set of points where at least one tangent cone is translation invariant along $m-1$ directions is locally a connected $C^{1,β}$ submanifold, and moreover such points have unique tangent cones; (ii) the remaining part of the singular set is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable, with a unique flat tangent cone (with multiplicity) at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. flat singular point. These results are consequences of fine excess decay theorems as well as almost monotonicity of a universal frequency function.

Sobolev extension in a simple case

In this paper, we establish the existence of a bounded, linear extension operator $T: L^{2,p}(E) \to L^{2,p}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ when $1<p<2$ and $E$ is a finite subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ contained in a line.

The Fine Structure of the Singular Set of Area-Minimizing Integral Currents III: Frequency 1 Flat Singular Points and $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. Uniqueness of Tangent Cones

We consider an area-minimizing integral current $T$ of codimension higher than 1 ins a smooth Riemannian manifold $Σ$. We prove that $T$ has a unique tangent cone, which is a superposition of planes, at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. point in its support. In combination with works of the first and third authors, we conclude that the singular set of $T$ is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable.

Flat interior singularities for area almost-minimizing currents

The interior regularity of area-minimizing integral currents and semi-calibrated currents has been studied extensively in recent decades, with sharp dimension estimates established on their interior singular sets in any dimension and codimension. In stark contrast, the best result in this direction for general almost-minimizing integral currents is due to Bombieri in the 1980s, and demonstrates that the interior regular set is dense. The main results of this article show the sharpness of Bombieri's result by constructing two families of examples of area almost-minimizing integral currents whose flat singular sets contain any closed, empty interior subset $K$ of an $m$-dimensional plane in $\mathbb{R}^{m+n}$. The first family of examples are codimension one currents induced by a superposition of $C^{k,α_*}$ graphs with $K$ contained in the boundary of their zero set. The second family of examples are two dimensional area almost-minimizing integral currents in $\mathbb{R}^4$ whose set of branching singularities contains $K$.

Rectifiability of flat singular points for area-minimizing mod$(2Q)$ hypercurrents

Consider an $m$-dimensional area minimizing mod$(2Q)$ current $T$, with $Q\in\mathbb{N}$, inside a sufficiently regular Riemannian manifold of dimension $m + 1$. We show that the set of singular density-$Q$ points with a flat tangent cone is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable and has locally finite $(m-2)$-dimensional upper Minkowski content. This complements the thorough structural analysis of the singularities of area-minimizing hypersurfaces modulo $p$ that has been completed in the series of works of De Lellis-Hirsch-Marchese-Stuvard and De Lellis-Hirsch-Marchese-Stuvard-Spolaor, and the work of Minter-Wickramasekera.

Higher integrability for measures satisfying a PDE constraint

We establish higher integrability estimates for constant-coefficient systems of linear PDEs \[ \mathcal{A} μ= σ, \] where $μ\in \mathcal{M}(Ω;V)$ and $σ\in \mathcal{M}(Ω;W)$ are vector measures and the polar $\frac{\mathrm{d} μ}{\mathrm{d} |μ|}$ is uniformly close to a convex cone of $V$ intersecting the wave cone of $\mathcal{A}$ only at the origin. More precisely, we prove local compensated compactness estimates of the form \[ \|μ\|_{\mathrm{L}^p(Ω')} \lesssim |μ|(Ω) + |σ|(Ω), \qquad Ω' \Subset Ω. \] Here, the exponent $p$ belongs to the (optimal) range $1 \leq p < d/(d-k)$, $d$ is the dimension of $Ω$, and $k$ is the order of $\mathcal{A}$. We also obtain the limiting case $p = d/(d-k)$ for canceling constant-rank operators. We consider applications to compensated compactness and {applications to the theory of} functions of bounded variation and bounded deformation.
