Spectral Stieltjes-Type Integration and Some Applications

This paper presents Stieltjes-type integration for operator-valued functions with respect to spectral families. The relation between Riemann-Stieltjes integrals associated with some classes of spectral families including, in particular, those that arise in the context of the Stone representation theorem for Banach spaces is established. The developed approach is applied to the structural analysis of the operators commuting with a one-parameter representation satisfying the Generalized Stone theorem.

On single commutators in II_1-factors

We investigate the question of whether all elements of trace zero in a II_1-factor are single commutators. We show that all nilpotent elements are single commutators, as are all normal elements of trace zero whose spectral distributions are discrete measures. Some other classes of examples are considered.

Higher order spectral shift

We construct higher order spectral shift functions, extending the perturbation theory results of M. G. Krein and L. S. Koplienko on representations for the remainders of the first and second order Taylor-type approximations of operator functions. The higher order spectral shift functions represent the remainders of higher order Taylor-type approximations; they can be expressed recursively via the lower order (in particular, Krein's and Koplienko's) ones. We also obtain higher order spectral averaging formulas generalizing the Birman-Solomyak spectral averaging formula. The results are obtained in the semi-finite von Neumann algebra setting, with the perturbation taken in the Hilbert-Schmidt class of the algebra.

Higher order spectral shift, II. Unbounded case

We construct higher order spectral shift functions, which represent the remainders of Taylor-type approximations for the value of a function at a perturbed self-adjoint operator by derivatives of the function at an initial unbounded operator. In the particular cases of the zero and the first order approximations, the corresponding spectral shift functions have been constructed by M. G. Krein and L. S. Koplienko, respectively. The higher order spectral shift functions obtained in this paper can be expressed recursively via the lower order ones, in particular, Krein's and Koplienko's spectral shift functions. This extends the recent results of Dykema and Skripka for bounded operators.

The Birman-Schwinger principle in von Neumann algebras of finite type

We introduce a relative index for a pair of dissipative operators in a von Neumann algebra of finite type and prove an analog of the Birman-Schwinger principle in this setting. As an application of this result, revisiting the Birman-Krein formula in the abstract scattering theory, we represent the de la Harpe-Skandalis determinant of the characteristic function of dissipative operators in the algebra in terms of the relative index.
