On the intrinsic geometry of polyhedra: Convex polygon coordinates

There is a very extensive literature dealing with convex polytopes from the standpoints of combinatorics and numerical analysis. By contrast, the current paper adopts an alternative viewpoint that regards a polytope as an autonomous space in its own right, with its own intrinsic geometry. Our attention is focused on the complete set of all the coordinate systems that serve to locate a point of the polytope; divorced, for example, from the smoothness issues that are of concern for applications in numerical analysis. We use the efficient and appropriate algebraic language of barycentric algebras to elicit the convex structure of the set of polytope coordinate systems. Specializing to convex polygons, we examine the chordal coordinate systems that are determined by the triangulations of the polygon. An algorithm to compute the coordinates of a point within such a system is presented. The algorithm relies on a coalgebra structure that transports a probability distribution on one side of a triangle to distributions on each of the remaining two sides. The Catalan number enumeration of the polygon triangulations (well-known within combinatorics) is then obtained in a natural geometric fashion from the parsing trees of the coalgebra structure of our algorithm.

In Search of Homology for Quasigroups of Bol-Moufang Type

We initiate (co)homology theory for quasigroups of Bol-Moufang type based on analysis of their extensions by affine quasigroups of the same type. We use these extensions to define second and third boundary operations, $\partial_2(x,y)$ and $\partial_3(x,y,z)$, respectively. We use these definitions to compute the second homology groups for several examples from the work of Phillips and Vojtechovsky. We speculate about the relation between these homology groups and those obtained from a small category with coefficients in a functor.

Dihedral solutions of the set theoretical Yang-Baxter equation

We introduce the notion of a \emph{braided dihedral set} (BDS) to describe set-theoretical solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) that furnish representations of the infinite dihedral group on the Cartesian square of the underlying set. BDS which lead to representations of the symmetric group on three objects are called \emph{braided triality sets} (BTS). Basic examples of BDS come from symmetric spaces. We show that Latin BDS (LBDS) can be described entirely in terms of involutions of uniquely 2-divisible Bruck loops. We show that isomorphism classes of LBDS are in one-to-one correspondence with conjugacy classes of involutions of uniquely 2-divisible Bruck loops. We describe all LBDS of prime, prime-square and 3 times prime-order, up to isomorphism. Using \texttt{GAP}, we enumerate isomorphism classes of LBDS of orders 27 and 81. Latin BTS, or LBTS, are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with involutions of commutative Moufang loops of exponent 3 (CML3), and, as with LBDS, isomorphisms classes of LBTS coincide with conjugacy classes of CML3-involutions. We classify all LBTS of order at most 81.

From affine to barycentric coordinates in polytopes

Each point of a simplex is expressed as a unique convex combination of the vertices. The coefficients in the combination are the barycentric coordinates of the point. For each point in a general convex polytope, there may be multiple representations, so its barycentric coordinates are not necessarily unique. There are various schemes to fix particular barycentric coordinates: Gibbs, Wachspress, cartographic, etc. In this paper, a method for producing sparse barycentric coordinates in polytopes will be discussed. It uses a purely algebraic treatment of affine spaces and convex sets, with barycentric algebras. The method is based on a certain decomposition of each finite-dimensional convex polytope into a union of simplices of the same dimension.

Barycentric algebras -- convexity and order

This is the abstract of a series of lectures given during the XIIIth School on Geometry and Physics, Bialystok (Poland), in July 2024. In this minicourse, we first examine the algebraic aspects of barycentric algebras. Then, we focus on various examples and applications, reviewing the pertinence of the barycentric algebra structure.

Partitions of unity and barycentric algebras

Barycentric coordinates provide solutions to the problem of expressing an element of a compact convex set as a convex combination of a finite number of extreme points of the set. They have been studied widely within the geometric literature, typically in response to the demands of interpolation, numerical analysis and computer graphics. In this note we bring an algebraic perspective to the problem, based on barycentric algebras. We focus on the discussion of relations between different subclasses of partitions of unity, one arising in the context of barycentric coordinates, based on the tautological map introduced by Guessab.

Indecomposable involutive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of multipermutational level 2 with abelian permutation group

We present a construction of all finite indecomposable involutive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of multipermutational level at most 2 with abelian permutation group. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for the number of such solutions with a fixed number of elements. We also describe some properties of the automorphism groups in this case - in particular, we show they are regular abelian groups.

Semilattice ordered algebras with constants

We continue our studies on semilattice ordered algebras. This time we accept constants in the type of algebras. We investigate identities satisfied by such algebras and describe the free objects in varieties of semilattice ordered algebras with constants.

Distributive biracks and solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We investigate a class of non-involutive solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation which generalize self-distributive (derived) solutions. In particular, we study generalized multipermutation solutions in this class. We show that the Yang-Baxter (permutation) groups of such solutions are nilpotent. We formulate the results in the language of biracks.

Knot-theoretic flocks

We characterize the para-associative ternary quasigroups (flocks) applicable to knot theory, and show which of these structures are isomorphic. We enumerate them up to order 64. We note that the operation used in knot-theoretic flocks has its non-associative version in extra loops. We use a group action on the set of flock colorings to improve the cocycle invariant associated with the knot-theoretic flock (co)homology.

The construction of multipermutation solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of level 2

We study involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation of multipermutation level 2. These solutions happen to fall into two classes -- distributive ones and non-distributive ones. The distributive ones can be effectively constructed using a set of abelian groups and a matrix of constants. Using this construction, we enumerate all distributive involutive solutions up to size 14. The non-distributive solutions can be also easily constructed, using a distributive solution and a permutation.

The retraction relation for biracks

In {\it Set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation} (Duke Math. J. {\bf 100} (1999), 169--209), Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev introduced, for each non-degenerate involutive set-theoretical solution $(X,σ,τ)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation, the equivalence relation $\sim$ defined on the set $X$ and they considered a new non-degenerate involutive induced \emph{retraction} solution defined on the quotient set $X^{\sim}$. It is well known that translating set-theoretical non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation into the universal algebra language we obtain an algebra called a \emph{birack}. In the paper we introduce the \emph{generalized retraction} relation $\approx$ on a birack, which is equal to $\sim$ in an involutive case. We present a complete algebraic proof that the relation $\approx$ is a congruence of the birack. Thus we show that the retraction of a set-theoretical non-degenerate solution is well defined not only in the involutive case but also in the case of all non-involutive solutions.

Knot-theoretic ternary groups

We describe various properties and give several characterizations of ternary groups satisfying two axioms derived from the third Reidemeister move in knot theory. Using special attributes of such ternary groups, such as semi-commutativity, we construct a ternary invariant of curves immersed in compact surfaces, considered up to flat Reidemeister moves.

Subquandles of affine quandles

A quandle will be called quasi-affine, if it embeds into an affine quandle. Our main result is a characterization of quasi-affine quandles, by group-theoretic properties of their displacement group, by a universal algebraic condition coming from the commutator theory, and by an explicit construction over abelian groups. As a consequence, we obtain efficient algorithms for recognizing affine and quasi-affine quandles, and we enumerate small quasi-affine quandles. We also prove that the "abelian implies quasi-affine" problem of universal algebra has affirmative answer for the class of quandles.

Subdirectly irreducible medial quandles

We describe all subdirectly irreducible medial quandles. We show that they fall within one of four disjoint classes. In particular, in the finite case they are either connected (and therefore Alexander quandles) or reductive. Moreover, we provide a representation of all non-connected subdirectly irreducible medial quandles.

Closure operators on algebras

We study connections between closure operators on an algebra $(A,\Om)$ and congruences on the extended power algebra defined on the same algebra. We use these connections to give an alternative description of the lattice of all subvarieties of semilattice ordered algebras.
