Optimal skyrmion stability in antisymmetric ultrathin ferromagnetic bilayers

We demonstrate the stray-field-mediated skyrmion stabilizing capabilities of ultrathin exchange-decoupled antisymmetric ferromagnetic bilayers based on conventional transition metal materials. Using an asymptotically exact micromagnetic model valid in the ultrathin film limit, we show that the antisymmetric tailoring of the bilayer allows the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the dipolar interaction to act synergistically to stabilize skyrmions, in contrast to the monolayer case, in which these energies compete. To obtain optimal stability of these skyrmions against collapse and bursting -- the two fundamental processes determining skyrmion lifetime, we carry out an asymptotic analysis of the saddle point solution that separates the skyrmion from the demagnetized state. The result is an optimal stability line for compact skyrmions in the non-dimensional parameter space of the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength and the effective film thickness. Our predictions are confirmed by extensive micromagnetic simulations of antisymmetric bilayers, using magnetic parameters of the conventional Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ systems. Our results provide a new pathway for experimental observations of 10 nm radius zero-field skyrmions with lifetimes compatible with information technology applications.

Asymptotically exact formulas for the stripe domains period in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with out-of-plane anisotropy

We derive asymptotically exact formulas for the equilibrium magnetic stripe period in ultrathin films with out-of-plane anisotropy that include the full domain wall magnetic dipolar energy. Starting with the reduced two-dimensional micromagnetic model valid for thin films, we obtain the leading order approximation for the energy per unit volume in the vanishing film thickness limit in the case of Bloch and N\'eel wall rotations. Its minimization in the stripe period leads to an analytical expression for the equilibrium period with a prefactor proportional to the Bloch wall width. The constant in the prefactor, related to the long-range dipolar interactions, is carefully evaluated. This results in a remarkable agreement of the stripe domain energy density and stripe period predicted by our analytical formulas with micromagnetic simulations. Our formula can be used to accurately deduce magnetic parameters from the experimental measurements of the stripe period and to systematically predict the equilibrium stripe periods in ultrathin films.

Theory of magnetic field-stabilized compact skyrmions in thin film ferromagnets

We present a micromagnetic theory of compact magnetic skyrmions under applied magnetic field that accounts for the full dipolar energy and the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction (DMI) in the thin film regime. Asymptotic analysis is used to derive analytical formulas for the parametric dependence of the skyrmion size and rotation angle, as well as the energy barriers for collapse and bursting, two processes that lead to a finite skyrmion lifetime. We demonstrate the existence of a new regime at low DMI, in which the skyrmion is stabilized by a combination of non-local dipolar interaction and a magnetic field applied parallel to its core, and discuss the conditions for an experimental realization of such field-stabilized skyrmions.

A micromagnetic theory of skyrmion lifetime in ultrathin ferromagnetic films

We use the continuum micromagnetic framework to derive the formulas for compact skyrmion lifetime due to thermal noise in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with relatively weak interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In the absence of a saddle point connecting the skyrmion solution to the ferromagnetic state, we interpret the skyrmion collapse event as ``capture by an absorber'' at microscale. This yields an explicit Arrhenius collapse rate with both the barrier height and the prefactor as functions of all the material parameters, as well as the dynamical paths to collapse.

A quantitative description of skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films and rigidity of degree $\pm1$ harmonic maps from $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$

We characterize skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films as local minimizers of a reduced micromagnetic energy appropriate for quasi two-dimensional materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The minimization is carried out in a suitable class of two-dimensional magnetization configurations that prevents the energy from going to negative infinity, while not imposing any restrictions on the spatial scale of the configuration. We first demonstrate existence of minimizers for an explicit range of the model parameters when the energy is dominated by the exchange energy. We then investigate the conformal limit, in which only the exchange energy survives and identify the asymptotic profiles of the skyrmions as degree 1 harmonic maps from the plane to the sphere, together with their radii, angles and energies. A byproduct of our analysis is a quantitative rigidity result for degree $\pm 1$ harmonic maps from the two-dimensional sphere to itself.

Reversible vs. irreversible voltage manipulation of interfacial magnetic anisotropy in Pt/Co/oxide multilayers

The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy at the Co/oxide interface in Pt/Co/MOx (MOx = MgOx, AlOx, TbOx) was modified by an electric field using a 10 nm-thick ZrO2 as a solid electrolyte. The large voltage-driven modification of interfacial magnetic anisotropy and the non-volatility of the effect is explained in terms of the migration of oxygen ions towards/away from the Co/MOx interface. While the effect is reversible in Pt/Co/AlOx and Pt/Co/TbOx, where the Co layer can be oxidised or reduced, in Pt/Co/MgOx the effect has been found to be irreversible. We propose that these differences may be related to the different nature of the ionic conduction within the MOx layers.

Electric field control of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ thin films

We studied electric field modification of magnetic properties in a Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ trilayer via magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We observed the spontaneous formation of labyrinthine magnetic domain structure due to thermally activated domain nucleation and propagation under zero applied magnetic field. A variation of the period of the labyrinthine structure under electric field is observed as well as saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy variations. Using an analytical formula of the stripe equilibrium width we estimate the variation of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction under electric field as function of the exchange stiffness constant.

Unraveling the role of dipolar versus Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in stabilizing compact magnetic skyrmions

Magnetic skyrmions have been the subject of extensive experimental studies in ferromagnetic thin films and multilayers, revealing a diversity in their size, stability and internal structure. While the orthodox skyrmion theory focuses on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction (DMI) and neglects higher-order energy terms, it is becoming clear that the full stray field energy needs to be taken into account to understand these recent observations. Here we present a micromagnetic study based on rigorous mathematical analysis which allows to account for the full stray field energy in the thin film and low DMI regime. In this regime, the skyrmion profile is close to a Belavin-Polyakov profile, which yields analytical expressions for the equilibrium skyrmion radius and energy. The obtained formulas provide a clear identification of Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia and long-range dipolar interactions as two physical mechanisms determining skyrmion size and stability, a consideration of importance for the optimization of skyrmion characteristics for spintronic applications.

Large voltage tuning of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction: a route towards dynamic control of skyrmion chirality

Electric control of magnetism is a prerequisite for efficient and low power spintronic devices. More specifically, in heavy metal/ ferromagnet/ insulator heterostructures, voltage gating has been shown to locally and dynamically tune magnetic properties like interface anisotropy and saturation magnetization. However, its effect on interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which is crucial for the stability of magnetic skyrmions, has been challenging to achieve and has not been reported yet for ultrathin films. Here, we demonstrate 130% variation of DMI with electric field in Ta/FeCoB/TaOx trilayers through Brillouin Light Spectroscopy (BLS). Using polar- Magneto-Optical-Kerr-Effect microscopy, we further show a monotonic variation of DMI and skyrmionic bubble size with electric field, with an unprecedented efficiency. We anticipate through our observations that a sign reversal of DMI with electric field is possible, leading to a chirality switch. This dynamic manipulation of DMI establishes an additional degree of control to engineer programmable skyrmion based memory or logic devices.

The skyrmion-bubble transition in a ferromagnetic thin film

Magnetic skyrmions and bubbles, observed in ferromagnetic thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, are topological solitons which differ by their characteristic size and the balance in the energies at the origin of their stabilisation. However, these two spin textures have the same topology and a continuous transformation between them is allowed. In the present work, we derive an analytical model to explore the skyrmion-bubble transition. We evidence a region in the parameter space where both topological soliton solutions coexist and close to which transformations between skyrmion and bubbles are observed as a function of the magnetic field. Above a critical point, at which the energy barrier separating both solutions vanishes, only one topological soliton solution remains, which size can be continuously tuned from micrometer to nanometer with applied magnetic field.
