Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups III: Presentations and isomorphisms

This article is dedicated to the computation of an explicit presentation of some asymptotically rigid mapping class groups, namely the braided Higman-Thompson groups. To do so, we use the action of these groups on the spine complex, a simply connected cube complex constructed by the authors in a previous work. In particular, this allows to compute the abelianisations of these groups. With these new algebraic invariants we can handle many new cases of the isomorphism problem for asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of trees.

Survey on Cremona groups from a median geometric point of view

This expository article builds on lecture notes from a minicourse entitled "Cremona groups and CAT(0) cube complexes" and given by the author as part of the 2023 Riverside Workshop on Geometric Group Theory. It presents recent constructions of actions of Cremona groups on median graphs aimed at both geometric group theorists and algebraic geometers.

Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups II: strand diagrams and nonpositive curvature

In this article, we introduce a new family of groups, called Chambord groups and constructed from braided strand diagrams associated to specific semigroup presentations. It includes the asymptotically rigid mapping class groups previously studied by the authors such as the braided Higman-Thompson groups and the braided Houghton groups. Our main result shows that polycyclic subgroups in Chambord groups are virtually abelian and undistorted.

Cremona groups over finite fields, Neretin groups, and non-positively curved cube complexes

We show that plane Cremona groups over finite fields embed as dense subgroups into Neretin groups, i.e. groups of almost automorphisms of rooted trees. We also show that if the finite base field has even characteristic and contains at least 4 elements, then the permutations induced by birational transformations on rational points of regular projective surfaces are even. In a second part, we construct explicit locally compact CAT(0) cube complexes, on which Neretin groups act properly. This allows us to recover in a unified way various results on Neretin groups such as that they are of type $F_{\infty}$. We also prove a new fixed-point theorem for CAT(0) cube complexes without infinite cubes and use it to deduce a regularisation theorem for plane Cremona groups over finite fields.

Actions of Cremona groups on CAT(0) cube complexes

For each d we construct CAT(0) cube complexes on which Cremona groups rank d act by isometries. From these actions we deduce new and old group theoretical and dynamical results about Cremona groups. In particular, we study the dynamical behaviour of the irreducible components of exceptional loci, we prove regularization theorems, we find new constraints on the degree growth for non-regularizable birational transformations, and we show that the centralizer of certain birational transformations is small.

Asymptotically rigid mapping class groups I: Finiteness properties of braided Thompson's and Houghton's groups

This article is dedicated to the study of asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of infinitely-punctured surfaces obtained by thickening planar trees. Such groups include the braided Ptolemy-Thompson groups $T^\sharp,T^\ast$ introduced by Funar and Kapoudjian, and the braided Houghton groups $\mathrm{br}H_n$ introduced by Degenhardt. We present an elementary construction of a contractible cube complex, on which these groups act with cube-stabilisers isomorphic to finite extensions of braid groups. As an application, we prove Funar-Kapoudjian's and Degenhardt's conjectures by showing that $T^\sharp,T^\ast$ are of type $F_\infty$ and that $\mathrm{br}H_n$ is of type $F_{n-1}$ but not of type $F_n$.

Introduction to a small cancellation theorem

This note is intended as an introduction to two previous works respectively by Dahmani, Guirardel, Osin, and by Cantat, Lamy. We give two proofs of a Small Cancellation Theorem for groups acting on a simplicial tree. We discuss the application to the group of plane polynomial automorphisms over any ground field.

Elements generating a proper normal subgroup of the Cremona group

Consider an algebraically closed field k and the Cremona group of all birational transformations of the projective plane over k. We characterize infinite order elements of this group having a non-zero power generating a proper normal subgroup of the Cremona group.

Sur l'hyperbolicité de graphes associés au groupe de Cremona

To reinforce the analogy between the mapping class group and the Cremona group of rank $2$ over an algebraic closed field, we look for a graph analoguous to the curve graph and such that the Cremona group acts on it non-trivially. A candidate is a graph introduced by D. Wright. However, we demonstrate that it is not Gromov-hyperbolic. This answers a question of A. Minasyan and D. Osin. Then, we construct two graphs associated to a Voronoï tesselation of the Cremona group introduced in a previous work of the autor. We show that one is quasi-isometric to the Wright graph. We prove that the second one is Gromov-hyperbolic.

Pavage de Voronoï associé au groupe de Cremona

The action of the Cremona group of rank 2 on an infinite dimensional hyperbolic space is the main recent tool to study the Cremona group. Following the analogy with the action of PSL(2,Z) on the Poincaré half-plane, we exhibit a fundamental domain for this action by considering a Voronoï tessellation. Then we study adjacent cells to a given cell, as well as cells that share common points in the boundary at infinity.

Non simplicité du groupe de Cremona sur tout corps

Using a theorem of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin we prove that the Cremona group in 2 dimension is not simple, over any field. More precisely, we show that some elements of this group satisfy a weakened WPD property which is equivalent in our particular context to the Bestvina and Fujiwara's one.
