Discrete velocity Boltzmann equation in the plane: stationary solutions

The paper proves existence of mild solutions to normal discrete velocity Boltzmann equations sin the plane with no pair of colinear interacting velocities, and given ingoing boundary values. A key property is L1 compactness of the integrated collision frequency for a sequence of approximations. This is proved using the Kolmogorov-Riesz theorem, which here replaces the L1 compactness of velocity averages, not available when the velocities are discrete.

Aggregated Steady States of a Kinetic Model for Chemotaxis

A kinetic chemotaxis model with attractive interaction by quasistationary chemical signalling is considered. The special choice of the turning operator, with velocity jumps biased towards the chemical concentration gradient, permits closed ODE systems for moments of the distribution function of arbitrary order. The system for second order moments exhibits a critical mass phenomeneon. The main result is existence of an aggregated steady state for supercritical mass.

Monokinetic solutions to a singular Vlasov equation from a semiclassical perspective

Solutions to a singular one-dimensional Vlasov equation are obtained as the semiclassical limit of the Wigner transform associated to a logarithmic Schrodinger equation. Two frameworks are considered, regarding in particular the initial position density: Gaussian initial density, or smooth initial density away from vacuum. For Gaussian initial densities, the analysis also yields global solutions to the isothermal Euler system that do not enter the frame of regular solutions to hyperbolic systems by P. D. Lax.

Ghost effect by curvature in planar Couette flow

We study a rarefied gas, described by the Boltzmann equation, between two coaxial rotating cylinders in the small Knudsen number regime. When the radius of the inner cylinder is suitably sent to infinity, the limiting evolution is expected to converge to a modified Couette flow which keeps memory of the vanishing curvature of the cylinders (ghost effect). In the 1-d stationary case we prove the existence of a positive isolated L_2-solution to the Boltzmann equation and its convergence. This is obtained by means of a truncated bulk-boundary layer expansion which requires the study of a new Milne problem, and an estimate of the remainder based on a generalized spectral inequality.

Derivation of a gyrokinetic model. Existence and uniqueness of specific stationary solutions

A finite Larmor radius approximation is derived from the classical Vlasov equation, in the limit of large (and uniform) external magnetic field. We also provide an heuristic derivation of the electroneutrality equation in the finite Larmor radius setting. Existence and uniqueness of a solution is proven in the stationary frame for solutions depending only on the direction parallel to the magnetic field and factorizing in the velocity variables.
