Trivializing Torsors for Difference Algebraic Groups

We study torsors for groups defined by algebraic difference equations. Our main result provides necessary and sufficient conditions on the base difference field for all such torsors to be trivial. We also present an application to the uniqueness of difference Picard-Vessiot extensions for linear differential equations.

On homomorphic encryption using abelian groups: Classical security analysis

In [15], Leonardi and Ruiz-Lopez propose an additively homomorphic public key encryption scheme whose security is expected to depend on the hardness of the learning homomorphism with noise problem (LHN). Choosing parameters for their primitive requires choosing three groups $G$, $H$, and $K$. In their paper, Leonardi and Ruiz-Lopez claim that, when $G$, $H$, and $K$ are abelian, then their public key cryptosystem is not quantum secure. In this paper, we study security for finite abelian groups $G$, $H$, and $K$ in the classical case. Moreover, we study quantum attacks on instantiations with solvable groups.

Free differential Galois groups

We study the structure of the absolute differential Galois group of a rational function field over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In particular, we relate the behavior of differential embedding problems to the condition that the absolute differential Galois group is free as a proalgebraic group. Building on this, we prove Matzat's freeness conjecture in the case that the field of constants is algebraically closed of countably infinite transcendence degree over the rationals. This is the first known case of the twenty year old conjecture.

The differential Galois group of the rational function field

We determine the absolute differential Galois group of the field $\mathbb{C}(x)$ of rational functions: It is the free proalgebraic group on a set of cardinality $|\mathbb{C}|$. This solves a longstanding open problem posed by B.H. Matzat. For the proof we develop a new characterization of free proalgebraic groups in terms of split embedding problems, and we use patching techniques in order to solve a very general class of differential embedding problems. Our result about $\mathbb{C}(x)$ also applies to rational function fields over more general fields of coefficients.

Algebraic groups as difference Galois groups of linear differential equations

We study the inverse problem in the difference Galois theory of linear differential equations over the difference-differential field $\mathbb{C}(x)$ with derivation $\frac{d}{dx}$ and endomorphism $f(x)\mapsto f(x+1)$. Our main result is that every linear algebraic group, considered as a difference algebraic group, occurs as the difference Galois group of some linear differential equation over $\mathbb{C}(x)$.

Large Fields in Differential Galois Theory

We solve the inverse differential Galois problem over differential fields with a large field of constants of infinite transcendence degree over ${\mathbb Q}$. More generally, we show that over such a field, every split differential embedding problem can be solved. In particular, we solve the inverse differential Galois problem and all split differential embedding problems over ${\mathbb Q}_p(x)$.

Differential Embedding Problems over Laurent series fields

We solve the inverse differential Galois problem over the fraction field of $k[[t,x]]$ and use this to solve split differential embedding problems over $k((t))(x)$ that are induced from $k(x)$. The proofs use patching as well as prior results on inverse problems and embedding problems.

Differential Embedding Problems over Complex Function Fields

We introduce the notion of differential torsors, which allows the adaptation of constructions from algebraic geometry to differential Galois theory. Using these differential torsors, we set up a general framework for applying patching techniques in differential Galois theory over fields of characteristic zero. We show that patching holds over function fields over the complex numbers. As the main application, we prove the solvability of all differential embedding problems over complex function fields, thereby providing new insight on the structure of the absolute differential Galois group, i.e., the fundamental group of the underlying Tannakian category.

Torsors for Difference Algebraic Groups

We introduce a cohomology set for groups defined by algebraic difference equations and show that it classifies torsors under the group action. This allows us to compute all torsors for large classes of groups. We also develop some tools for difference algebraic geometry and present an application to the Galois theory of differential equations depending on a discrete parameter.

New classes of parameterized differential Galois groups

This paper is on the inverse parameterized differential Galois problem. We show that surprisingly many groups do not occur as parameterized differential Galois groups over K(x) even when K is algebraically closed. We then combine the method of patching over fields with a suitable version of Galois descent to prove that certain groups do occur as parameterized differential Galois groups over k((t))(x). This class includes linear differential algebraic groups that are generated by finitely many unipotent elements and also semisimple connected linear algebraic groups.
