Fully discrete approximation of the semilinear stochastic wave equation on the sphere

The semilinear stochastic wave equation on the sphere driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise is discretized by a stochastic trigonometric integrator in time and a spectral Galerkin approximation in space based on the spherical harmonic functions. Strong and almost sure convergence of the explicit fully discrete numerical scheme are shown. Furthermore, these rates are confirmed by numerical experiments.

An exponential map free implicit midpoint method for stochastic Lie-Poisson systems

An integrator for a class of stochastic Lie-Poisson systems driven by Stratonovich noise is developed. The integrator is suited for Lie-Poisson systems that also admit an isospectral formulation, which enables scalability to high-dimensional systems. Its derivation follows from discrete Lie-Poisson reduction of the symplectic midpoint scheme for stochastic Hamiltonian systems. We prove almost sure preservation of Casimir functions and coadjoint orbits under the numerical flow and provide strong and weak convergence rates of the proposed method. The scalability, structure-conservation, and convergence rates are illustrated numerically for the (generalized) rigid body, point vortex dynamics, and the two-dimensional Euler equations on the sphere.

Surface finite element approximation of parabolic SPDEs with Whittle--Matérn noise

We propose and analyse a new type of fully discrete surface finite element approximation of a class of linear parabolic stochastic evolution equations with additive noise. Our discretization uses a surface finite element approximation of the noise, and is tailored for equations with noise having covariance operator defined by (negative powers of) elliptic operators, like Whittle--Matérn random fields. We derive strong and pathwise convergence rates of our approximation, and verify these by numerical experiments.

Approximation of the L\'evy-driven stochastic heat equation on the sphere

The stochastic heat equation on the sphere driven by an additive square-integra\-ble L\'evy process is approximated by a spectral method in space and forward and backward Euler--Maruyama schemes in time. New regularity results are proven for its solution. The spectral approximation is based on a truncation of the series expansion with respect to the spherical harmonic functions. For a given regularity of the initial condition and two different settings of regularity for the driving noise, strong convergence rates for the spectral approximation and for the Euler--Maruyama methods are proven. Moreover, weak rates of up to twice the strong rates are shown. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results.

Isotropic Q-fractional Brownian motion on the sphere: regularity and fast simulation

As an extension of isotropic Gaussian random fields and Q-Wiener processes on d-dimensional spheres, isotropic Q-fractional Brownian motion is introduced and sample Hölder regularity in space-time is shown depending on the regularity of the spatial covariance operator Q and the Hurst parameter H. The processes are approximated by a spectral method in space for which strong and almost sure convergence are shown. The underlying sample paths of fractional Brownian motion are simulated by circulant embedding or conditionalized random midpoint displacement. Temporal accuracy and computational complexity are numerically tested, the latter matching the complexity of simulating a Q-Wiener process if allowing for a temporal error.

Guided smoothing and control for diffusion processes

The smoothing distribution is the conditional distribution of the diffusion process in the space of trajectories given noisy observations made continuously in time. It is generally difficult to sample from this distribution. We use the theory of enlargement of filtrations to show that the conditional process has an additional drift term derived from the backward filtering distribution that is moving or guiding the process towards the observations. This term is intractable, but its effect can be equally introduced by replacing it with a heuristic, where importance weights correct for the discrepancy. From this Markov Chain Monte Carlo and sequential Monte Carlo algorithms are derived to sample from the smoothing distribution. The choice of the guiding heuristic is discussed from an optimal control perspective and evaluated. The results are tested numerically on a stochastic differential equation for reaction-diffusion.

Finite element approximation of parabolic SPDEs with Whittle--Matérn noise

We propose and analyse a new type of fully discrete finite element approximation of a class of linear stochastic parabolic evolution equations with additive noise. Our discretization differs from previous ones in that we use a finite element approximation of the noise, as opposed to an $L^2$ projection. This approximation is tailored for equations where the noise has covariance operator defined in terms of (negative powers of) elliptic operators, like Whittle--Matérn random fields. Strong convergence rates up to order $2$ in space and $1$ in time are shown and verified by numerical experiments in dimension $1$ and $2$.

Non-stationary Gaussian random fields on hypersurfaces: Sampling and strong error analysis

A flexible model for non-stationary Gaussian random fields on hypersurfaces is introduced. The class of random fields on curves and surfaces is characterized by an amplitude spectral density of a second order elliptic differential operator. Sampling is done by a Galerkin--Chebyshev approximation based on the surface finite element method and Chebyshev polynomials. Strong error bounds are shown with convergence rates depending on the smoothness of the approximated random field. Numerical experiments that confirm the convergence rates are presented.

Euler-Maruyama approximations of the stochastic heat equation on the sphere

The stochastic heat equation on the sphere driven by additive isotropic Wiener noise is approximated by a spectral method in space and forward and backward Euler-Maruyama schemes in time. The spectral approximation is based on a truncation of the series expansion with respect to the spherical harmonic functions. Optimal strong convergence rates for a given regularity of the initial condition and driving noise are derived for the Euler-Maruyama methods. Besides strong convergence, convergence of the expectation and second moment is shown, where the approximation of the second moment converges with twice the strong rate. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results.

Linear Lyapunov Functions for Nonlinear Compartmental Systems

This technical note examines exponential stability of the null solution to a large class of compartmental systems governed by ordinary differential equations. Sufficient conditions under which these systems admit a linear Lyapunov function are provided. The coefficients of the Lyapunov functions and the exponential decay rate they yield are obtained from an eigenvalue problem. For a special case of the system class considered, we derive an equivalence between attractivity of the null solution and the existence of a linear Lyapunov function.

Localized orthogonal decomposition for a multiscale parabolic stochastic partial differential equation

A multiscale method is proposed for a parabolic stochastic partial differential equation with additive noise and highly oscillatory diffusion. The framework is based on the localized orthogonal decomposition (LOD) method and computes a coarse-scale representation of the elliptic operator, enriched by fine-scale information on the diffusion. Optimal order strong convergence is derived. The LOD technique is combined with a (multilevel) Monte-Carlo estimator and the weak error is analyzed. Numerical examples that confirm the theoretical findings are provided, and the computational efficiency of the method is highlighted.

Galerkin--Chebyshev approximation of Gaussian random fields on compact Riemannian manifolds

A new numerical approximation method for a class of Gaussian random fields on compact connected oriented Riemannian manifolds is introduced. This class of random fields is characterized by the Laplace--Beltrami operator on the manifold. A Galerkin approximation is combined with a polynomial approximation using Chebyshev series. This so-called Galerkin--Chebyshev approximation scheme yields efficient and generic sampling algorithms for Gaussian random fields on manifolds. Strong and weak orders of convergence for the Galerkin approximation and strong convergence orders for the Galerkin--Chebyshev approximation are shown and confirmed through numerical experiments.

Finite element approximation of Lyapunov equations related to parabolic stochastic PDEs

A numerical analysis for the fully discrete approximation of an operator Lyapunov equation related to linear SPDEs (stochastic partial differential equations) driven by multiplicative noise is considered. The discretization of the Lyapunov equation in space is given by finite elements and in time by a semiimplicit Euler scheme. The main result is the derivation of the rate of convergence in operator norm. Moreover, it is shown that the solution of the equation provides a representation of a quadratic and path dependent functional of the SPDE solution. This fact yields a deterministic numerical method to compute such functionals. As a secondary result, weak error rates are established for a fully discrete finite element approximation of the SPDE with respect to this functional. This is obtained as a consequence of the approximation analysis of the Lyapunov equation. It is the first weak convergence analysis for fully discrete finite element approximations of SPDEs driven by multiplicative noise that obtains double the strong rate of convergence, especially for path dependent functionals and smooth spatial noise. Numerical experiments illustrate the results empirically and it is demonstrated that the deterministic method has advantages over Monte Carlo sampling in a stability context.

Approximation of SPDE covariance operators by finite elements: A semigroup approach

The problem of approximating the covariance operator of the mild solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation is considered. An integral equation involving the semigroup of the mild solution is derived and a general error decomposition is proven. This formula is applied to approximations of the covariance operator of a stochastic advection-diffusion equation and a stochastic wave equation, both on bounded domains. The approximations are based on finite element discretizations in space and rational approximations of the exponential function in time. Convergence rates are derived in the trace class and Hilbert--Schmidt norms with numerical simulations illustrating the results.

Hilbert--Schmidt regularity of symmetric integral operators on bounded domains with applications to SPDE approximations

Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have important implications for stochastic partial differential equations on bounded domains as well as their numerical approximations. The main tools used to derive the estimates are properties of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of functions on bounded domains along with Hilbert--Schmidt embeddings of Sobolev spaces. Both non-homogeneous and homogeneous kernels are considered. In the latter case, results in a general Schatten class norm are also provided. Important examples of homogeneous kernels covered by the results of the paper include the class of Matérn kernels.

Short-term traffic prediction using physics-aware neural networks

In this work, we propose an algorithm performing short-term predictions of the flux of vehicles on a stretch of road, using past measurements of the flux. This algorithm is based on a physics-aware recurrent neural network. A discretization of a macroscopic traffic flow model (using the so-called Traffic Reaction Model) is embedded in the architecture of the network and yields flux predictions based on estimated and predicted space-time dependent traffic parameters. These parameters are themselves obtained using a succession of LSTM ans simple recurrent neural networks. Besides, on top of the predictions, the algorithm yields a smoothing of its inputs which is also physically-constrained by the macroscopic traffic flow model. The algorithm is tested on raw flux measurements obtained from loop detectors.

Surface finite element approximation of spherical Whittle--Matérn Gaussian random fields

Spherical Whittle--Matérn Gaussian random fields are considered as solutions to fractional elliptic stochastic partial differential equations on the sphere. Approximation is done with surface finite elements. While the non-fractional part of the operator is solved by a recursive scheme, a quadrature of the Dunford--Taylor integral representation is employed for the fractional part. Strong error analysis is performed, and the computational complexity is bounded in terms of the accuracy. Numerical experiments for different choices of parameters confirm the theoretical findings.

Numerical approximation and simulation of the stochastic wave equation on the sphere

Solutions to the stochastic wave equation on the unit sphere are approximated by spectral methods. Strong, weak, and almost sure convergence rates for the proposed numerical schemes are provided and shown to depend only on the smoothness of the driving noise and the initial conditions. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical rates. The developed numerical method is extended to stochastic wave equations on higher-dimensional spheres and to the free stochastic Schrödinger equation on the unit sphere.
