Squeezed-Light-Enhanced Dispersive Gyroscope based Optical Microcavities

Optical gyroscope based on the Sagnac effect have excellent potential in the application of high-sensitivity inertial rotation sensors. In this paper, we demonstrate that for an optical resonance gyroscope with normal dispersion, the measurement sensitivity can be increased by two orders of magnitude through coupling into a squeezed vacuum light, which is different from that in the classical situation. When the system is operated under critical anomalous dispersion condition, injecting a squeezed vacuum light allows the measurement sensitivity beyond the corresponding standard quantum limit by five orders of magnitude, with a minimum value of 3.8*10^-5 Hz. This work offers a promising possibility for developing optical gyroscopes that combine high sensitivity with tiny size.

Exceptional Point modulated by Kerr effect in Anti-Parity-Time Symmetry System

With respect to parity-time (PT) symmetry, anti-parity-time (APT) symmetric system exhibits much easier readout mechanism due to its real frequency splitting. Generally, such systems need to be operated at exceptional points (EPs) to obtain the best performance. However, strict conditons to locate APT symmetric systems at their EPs precisely put restraints on their practical applications. To overcome this problem, we propose a scheme to manipulate the EPs in APT symmetric configuration by Kerr effect. It is demonstrated that operating EPs by self-phase modulation alone will impede the frequency splitting caused by external perturbations, while cross-phase modulation can enhance the response to measurable perturbations. We also investigate the thermal effect induced by high light intensity, which could reduce the power to manipulate EPs. This proposed scheme can pave a new way in fabricating devices based on APT symmetry.

The properties of strange quark matter under strong rotation

We investigate the rotating quark matter in the three-flavor Nambu and Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The chiral condensation, spin polarization and number susceptibility of the light and strange quarks are carefully studied at finite temperature without or with finite chemical potential in this model. We find that the rotation suppresses the chiral condensation and enhances the first-order quark spin polarization, however for the second-order quark spin polarization and quark number susceptibility the effect is complicated and interesting. When extending to the situation with finite chemical potential, we find the angular velocity also plays a crucial role, at small angular velocity the chemical potential enhances the susceptibility, however in the middle region of angular velocity the effect of the chemical potential is suppressed by the angular velocity and susceptibility can be changed considerably, it can be observed that at very low temperature in the presence of quark chemical potential the quark number susceptibility has two maxima with increasing angular velocity. Furthermore, it is found that at sufficiently large angular velocity the contributions played by light quark and strange quark to these phenomena are almost equal. we also explored the phase diagram in the $T$-$ω$ plane, we observe that there exist first order phase transitions for the rotating system and the first order phase transition lines move toward a higher temperature for decreasing angular velocity. It is also found that the different chemical potentials change the boundary of phase diagram, and that a larger chemical potential shifts down the critical temperature. We expect these studies to be used to understand the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration as well as probe the QCD phase transition.

The BEST framework for the search for the QCD critical point and the chiral magnetic effect

The Beam Energy Scan Theory (BEST) Collaboration was formed with the goal of providing a theoretical framework for analyzing data from the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The physics goal of the BES program is the search for a conjectured QCD critical point as well as for manifestations of the chiral magnetic effect. We describe progress that has been made over the previous five years. This includes studies of the equation of state and equilibrium susceptibilities, the development of suitable initial state models, progress in constructing a hydrodynamic framework that includes fluctuations and anomalous transport effects, as well as the development of freezeout prescriptions and hadronic transport models. Finally, we address the challenge of integrating these components into a complete analysis framework. This document describes the collective effort of the BEST Collaboration and its collaborators around the world.

The quantum kinetic equation and dynamical mass generation in 2+1 Dimensions

In this work, we study the relativistic quantum kinetic equations in 2+1 dimensions from Wigner function formalism by carrying out a systematic semi-classical expansion up to $\hbar$ order. The derived equations allow us to explore interesting transport phenomena in 2+1 dimensions. Within this framework, the parity-odd transport current induced by the external electromagnetic field is self-consistently derived. We also examine the dynamical mass generation by implementing four-fermion interaction with mean-field approximation. In this case, a new kind of transport current is found to be induced by the gradient of the mean-field condensate. Finally, we also utilize this framework to study the dynamical mass generation in an external magnetic field for the 2+1 dimensional system under equilibrium.

Exceptional surface-enhanced Rotation Sensing with Robustness in an optical microcavity

Exceptional points (EPs) are special singularities of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. At an EP, two or more eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. Recently, EP-based optical gyroscope near an EP was extensively investigated to improve the response to rotation. However, the highly resultant dimensionality in the eigenstate space causing from the EP-based system is sensitivity to more external perturbations, that is, the great response at EPs requires strict implementation conditions. To solve this problem, a new non-Hermitian structure was proposed that realizes an exceptional surface (EP surface) constructed of numerous EPs embedded in a high-dimensional parameter space. With respect to the isolated EPs, non-Hermitian EP surface provides additional degrees of freedom to permit the undesired perturbations (such as fabrication errors) shifts along the EP surface which corresponds to the robustness. On the other hand, the rotation will force the system away from these EPs obtaining a sensitivity enhancement of three orders of magnitude, compared to the traditional Sagnac effect rotation detecting. The EP surface system has a potential to combine robustness with enhanced sensitivity of the rotation.

High-sensitivity bio-sensor based on the real-splitting indirectly coupled Anti-Parity time symmetric WGMs

Detecting the size of single nanoparticle with high precision is crucial to understanding the characteristic of the nanoparticle. In this paper, we research the single particle detection based on the Anti-parity time symmetric (APT) indirectly coupled WGMs. The results show that the Anti-parity time symmetric WGM nanoparticle sensor exhibits giant enhancement in frequency splitting compared with single WGM sensor, when the system operating at exceptional point (EP). With respect to the parity-time symmetric nanoparticle sensor, our research exhibits a real eigenfrequency splitting, which can be directly detected.

Calculation of anisotropic transport coefficients for an ultrarelativistic Boltzmann gas in a magnetic field within a kinetic approach

According to the Kubo formulas we employ the (3+1)-d parton cascade, Boltzmann approach of multiparton scatterings (BAMPS), to calculate the anisotropic transport coefficients (shear viscosity and electric conductivity) for an ultrarelativistic Boltzmann gas in the presence of a magnetic field. The results are compared with those recently obtained by using the Grad's approximation. We find good agreements between both results, which confirms the general use of the derived Kubo formulas for calculating the anisotropic transport coefficients of quark-gluon plasma in a magnetic field.

Variable optical chirality in an atomic assisted microresonator

A whispering gallery mode resonator with a cavity-made slot filled atomic vapor is demonstrated, in which the chiral symmetry is broken induced by asymmetric backscattering of counter-propagating optical waves in the WGM microcavity. The chirality of resonator modes is steered via tuning dispersion relation in the cavity-made slot. The system exhibiting a high displacement sensitivity 15.22 THz/nm could be applied to optomechanical sensing applications.

Complete and Consistent Chiral Transport from Wigner Function Formalism

Recently there has been significant interest in understanding the macroscopic quantum transport in a many-body system of chiral fermions. A natural framework for describing such a system which is generally out of equilibrium, is the transport equation for its phase space distribution function. In this paper, we obtain a complete solution of the covariant chiral transport for massless fermions, by starting from the general Wigner function formalism and carrying out a complete and consistent semiclassical expansion up to $\hat{\mathbf{O}}(\hbar)$ order. In particular, we clarify certain subtle and confusing issues surrounding the Lorentz non-invariance and frame dependence associated with the 3D chiral kinetic theory. We prove that such frame dependence is uniquely and completely fixed by an unambiguous definition of the $\hat{\mathbf{O}}(\hbar)$ correction to the distribution function in each reference frame.

Out-of-Equilibrium Chiral Magnetic Effect from Chiral Kinetic Theory

Recently there has been significant interest in the macroscopic manifestation of chiral anomaly in many-body systems of chiral fermions. A notable example is the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Enthusiastic efforts have been made to search for the CME in the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy ion collisions. A crucial challenge is that the extremely strong magnetic field in such collisions may last only for a brief moment and the CME current may have to occur at so early a stage that the quark-gluon matter is still far from thermal equilibrium. This thus requires modeling of the CME in an out-of-equilibrium setting. With the recently developed theoretical tool of chiral kinetic theory, we make a first phenomenological study of the CME-induced charge separation during the pre-thermal stage in heavy ion collisions. The effect is found to be very sensitive to the time dependence of the magnetic field and also influenced by the initial quark momentum spectrum as well as the relaxation time of the system evolution toward thermal equilibrium. Within the present approach, such pre-thermal charge separation is found to be modest.

Solitonic modulation and Lifshitz point in an external magnetic field within Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the inhomogeneous solitonic modulation of a chiral condensate within the effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model when a constant external magnetic field is present. The self-consistent Pauli-Villars regularization scheme is adopted to manipulate the ultraviolet divergence encountered in the thermodynamic quantities. In order to determine the chiral restoration lines efficiently, a new kind of Ginzburg-Landau expansion approach is proposed here. At zero temperature, we find that both the upper and lower boundaries of the solitonic modulation oscillate with the magnetic field in the $μ$--$B$ phase diagram which is actually the de Hass-van Alphan (dHvA) oscillation. It is very interesting to find out how the tricritical Lifshitz point $(T_L,μ_L)$ evolves with the magnetic field: There are also dHvA oscillations in the $T_L$--$B$ and $μ_L$--$B$ curves, though the tricritical temperature $T_L$ increases monotonically with the magnetic field.
