Towards AI-Architecture Liberty: A Comprehensive Survey on Design and Generation of Virtual Architecture by Deep Learning

3D shape generation techniques leveraging deep learning have garnered significant interest from both the computer vision and architectural design communities, promising to enrich the content in the virtual environment. However, research on virtual architectural design remains limited, particularly regarding designer-AI collaboration and deep learning-assisted design. In our survey, we reviewed 149 related articles (81.2% of articles published between 2019 and 2023) covering architectural design, 3D shape techniques, and virtual environments. Through scrutinizing the literature, we first identify the principles of virtual architecture and illuminate its current production challenges, including datasets, multimodality, design intuition, and generative frameworks. We then introduce the latest approaches to designing and generating virtual buildings leveraging 3D shape generation and summarize four characteristics of various approaches to virtual architecture. Based on our analysis, we expound on four research agendas, including agency, communication, user consideration, and integrating tools. Additionally, we highlight four important enablers of ubiquitous interaction with immersive systems in deep learning-assisted architectural generation. Our work contributes to fostering understanding between designers and deep learning techniques, broadening access to designer-AI collaboration. We advocate for interdisciplinary efforts to address this timely research topic, facilitating content designing and generation in the virtual environment.

Ta2Pd3Te5 topological thermometer

In recent decades, there has been a persistent pursuit of applications for surface/edge states in topological systems, driven by their dissipationless transport effects. However, there have been limited tangible breakthroughs in this field. This work demonstrates the remarkable properties of the topological insulator Ta2Pd3Te5, as a thermometer. This material exhibits a power-law correlation in temperature-dependent resistance at low temperatures, stemming from its Luttinger liquid behavior of edge states, while exhibiting semiconductor behavior at high temperatures. The power-law behavior effectively addresses the issue of infinite resistance in semiconductor thermometers at ultra-low temperatures, thereby playing a crucial role in enabling efficient thermometry in refrigerators supporting millikelvin temperatures or below. By employing chemical doping, adjusting thickness, and controlling gate voltage, its power-law behavior and semiconductor behavior can be effectively modulated. This enables efficient thermometry spanning from millikelvin temperatures to room temperature, and allows for precise local temperature measurement. Furthermore, this thermometer exhibits excellent temperature sensitivity and resolution, and can be fine-tuned to show small magnetoresistance. In summary, the Ta2Pd3Te5 thermometer, also referred to as a topological thermometer, exhibits outstanding performance and significant potential for measuring a wider range of temperatures compared to conventional low-temperature thermometers.

Performance study of the JadePix-3 telescope from a beam test

We present the results of a beam test conducted on a telescope using the JadePix-3 pixel sensor, developed with TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology. The telescope is composed of five planes, each equipped with a JadePix-3 sensor with pitches of 26 um x 16 um and 23.11 um x 16 um. In addition, it features an FPGA-based synchronous readout system. The telescope underwent testing using an electron beam with energy ranging from 4 to 6 GeV. At an electron energy of 5.4 GeV, the telescope demonstrated superior spatial resolutions of 2.6 and 2.3 um in two dimensions. By designating the central plane as the device under test, we evaluated the JadePix-3 sensor's spatial resolutions as 5.2 and 4.6 um in two dimensions, achieving a detection efficiency of over 99%.

Charge-4e and charge-6e flux quantization and higher charge superconductivity in kagome superconductor ring devices

The flux quantization is a key indication of electron pairing in superconductors. For example, the well-known h/2e flux quantization is considered strong evidence for the existence of the charge-2e, two-electron Cooper pairs. Here we report evidence for multi-charge flux quantization in mesoscopic ring devices fabricated using the transition-metal kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5. We perform systematic magneto-transport measurements and observe unprecedented quantization of magnetic flux in units of h/4e and h/6e in magnetoresistance oscillations. Specifically, at low temperatures, magnetoresistance oscillations with period h/2e are detected, as expected from the flux quantization for charge-2e superconductivity. We find that the h/2e oscillations are suppressed and replaced by resistance oscillations with h/4e periodicity when temperature is increased. Increasing the temperature further suppresses the h/4e oscillations and robust resistance oscillations with h/6e periodicity emerge as evidence for charge-6e flux quantization. Our observations provide the first experimental evidence for the existence of multi-charge flux quanta and emergent quantum matter exhibiting higher-charge superconductivity in the strongly fluctuating region above the charge-2e Cooper pair condensate, revealing new insights into the intertwined and vestigial electronic order in kagome superconductors.

A robust and tunable Luttinger liquid in correlated edge of transition-metal second-order topological insulator Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$

The interplay between topology and interaction always plays an important role in condensed matter physics and induces many exotic quantum phases, while rare transition metal layered material (TMLM) has been proved to possess both. Here we report a TMLM Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Te$_5$ has the two-dimensional second-order topology (also a quadrupole topological insulator) with correlated edge states - Luttinger liquid. It is ascribed to the unconventional nature of the mismatch between charge- and atomic- centers induced by a remarkable double-band inversion. This one-dimensional protected edge state preserves the Luttinger liquid behavior with robustness and universality in scale from micro- to macro- size, leading to a significant anisotropic electrical transport through two-dimensional sides of bulk materials. Moreover, the bulk gap can be modulated by the thickness, resulting in an extensive-range phase diagram for Luttinger liquid. These provide an attractive model to study the interaction and quantum phases in correlated topological systems.

Study of Hybrid MicroPattern Gas Detector with CsI Photocathode For Super Tau-Charm Factory RICH

Super tau-Charm facility(STCF) is a future electron-position collider operating at tau-Charm energy region aimed to study hadron structure and spectroscopy. The baseline design of the STCF barrel particle identification(PID) detector in the momentum range up to 2 GeV/c is provided by a Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter(RICH). The architecture of the RICH is an approximately focusing design with liquid perfluorohexane sealed in the quartz container as radiator and a hybrid combination of a CsI coated layers of THGEMs and a Micromegas as the photo-electron detector. A 16*16 cm^2 prototype with quartz radiator has been built and tested at DESY. It was stably operated with 10^5 effective gain. In this paper, the design, the performance, the reconstruction algorithm and the systematic error for single photon electron angular resolution in the aspect of RICH detectors are discusses.

Decentralized, not Dehumanized in the Metaverse: Bringing Utility to NFTs through Multimodal Interaction

User Interaction for NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens) is gaining increasing attention. Although NFTs have been traditionally single-use and monolithic, recent applications aim to connect multimodal interaction with human behaviour. This paper reviews the related technological approaches and business practices in NFT art. We highlight that multimodal interaction is a currently under-studied issue in mainstream NFT art, and conjecture that multimodal interaction is a crucial enabler for decentralization in the NFT community. We propose a framework that combines a bottom-up approach with AI multimodal process. Through this framework, we put forward integrating human behaviour data into generative NFT units, as "multimodal interactive NFT". Our work displays the possibilities of NFTs in the art world, beyond the traditional 2D and 3D static content.

Infrared and visible image fusion based on Multi-State Contextual Hidden Markov Model

The traditional two-state hidden Markov model divides the high frequency coefficients only into two states (large and small states). Such scheme is prone to produce an inaccurate statistical model for the high frequency subband and reduces the quality of fusion result. In this paper, a fine-grained multi-state contextual hidden Markov model (MCHMM) is proposed for infrared and visible image fusion in the non-subsampled Shearlet domain, which takes full consideration of the strong correlations and level of details of NSST coefficients. To this end, an accurate soft context variable is designed correspondingly from the perspective of context correlation. Then, the statistical features provided by MCHMM are utilized for the fusion of high frequency subbands. To ensure the visual quality, a fusion strategy based on the difference in regional energy is proposed as well for lowfrequency subbands. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a superior performance compared with other fusion methods in both subjective and objective aspects.

Anomalous Josephson Effect in Topological Insulator-Based Josephson Trijunction

We studied anomalous Josephson effect (AJE) in Josephson trijunctions fabricated on Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and found that the AJE in T-shaped trijunctions significantly alters the Majorana phase diagram of the trijunctions, when an in-plane magnetic field is applied parallel to two of the three single junctions. Such a phenomenon in topological insulator-based Josephson trijunction provides unambiguous evidence for the existence of AJE in the system, and might provide an additional knob for controlling the Majorana bound states in the Fu-Kane scheme of topological quantum computation.

EndHiC: assemble large contigs into chromosomal-level scaffolds using the Hi-C links from contig ends

Motivation: The application of PacBio HiFi and ultra-long ONT reads have achieved huge progress in the contig-level assembly, but it is still challenging to assemble large contigs into chromosomes with available Hi-C scaffolding software, which all compute the contact value between contigs using the Hi-C links from the whole contig regions. As the Hi-C links of two adjacent contigs concentrate only at the neighbor ends of the contigs, larger contig size will reduce the power to differentiate adjacent (signal) and non-adjacent (noise) contig linkages, leading to a higher rate of mis-assembly. Results: We present a software package EndHiC, which is suitable to assemble large contigs (> 1-Mb) into chromosomal-level scaffolds, using Hi-C links from only the contig end regions instead of the whole contig regions. Benefiting from the increased signal to noise ratio, EndHiC achieves much higher scaffolding accuracy compared to existing software LACHESIS, ALLHiC, and 3D-DNA. Moreover, EndHiC has few parameters, runs 10-1000 times faster than existing software, needs trivial memory, provides robustness evaluation, and allows graphic viewing of the scaffold results. The high scaffolding accuracy and user-friendly interface of EndHiC, liberate the users from labor-intensive manual checks and revision works. A Two-Sample Robust Bayesian Mendelian Randomization Method Accounting for Linkage Disequilibrium and Idiosyncratic Pleiotropy with Applications to the COVID-19 Outcome

Mendelian randomization (MR) is a statistical method exploiting genetic variants as instrumental variables to estimate the causal effect of modifiable risk factors on an outcome of interest. Despite wide uses of various popular two-sample MR methods based on genome-wide association study summary level data, however, those methods could suffer from potential power loss or/and biased inference when the chosen genetic variants are in linkage disequilibrium (LD), and also have relatively large direct effects on the outcome whose distribution might be heavy-tailed which is commonly referred to as the idiosyncratic pleiotropy phenomenon. To resolve those two issues, we propose a novel Robust Bayesian Mendelian Randomization (RBMR) model that uses the more robust multivariate generalized t-distribution to model such direct effects in a probabilistic model framework which can also incorporate the LD structure explicitly. The generalized t-distribution can be represented as a Gaussian scaled mixture so that our model parameters can be estimated by the EM-type algorithms. We compute the standard errors by calibrating the evidence lower bound using the likelihood ratio test. Through extensive simulation studies, we show that our RBMR has robust performance compared to other competing methods. We also apply our RBMR method to two benchmark data sets and find that RBMR has smaller bias and standard errors. Using our proposed RBMR method, we find that coronary artery disease is associated with increased risk of critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We also develop a user-friendly R package RBMR for public use.

A thermal bonding method for manufacturing Micromegas detectors

For manufacturing Micromegas detectors, the "bulk" method based on photoetching, was successfully developed and widely used in nuclear and particle physics experiments. However, the complexity of the method requires a considerable number of advanced instruments and processing, limiting the accessibility of this method for production of Micromegas detectors. In view of these limitations with the bulk method, a new method based on thermal bonding technique (TBM) has been developed to manufacture Micromegas detectors in a much simplified and efficient way without etching. This paper describes the TBM in detail and presents performance of the Micromegas detectors built with the TBM. The effectiveness of this method was investigated by testing Micromegas detector prototypes built with the method. Both X-rays and electron beams were used to characterize the prototypes in a gas mixture of argon and CO2 (7%). A typical energy resolution of ~16% (full width at half maximum, FWHM) and an absolute gain greater than 10^4 were obtained with 5.9 keV X-rays. Detection efficiency greater than 98% and a spatial resolution of ~65 μm were achieved using a 5 GeV electron beam at the DESY test-beam facility. The gas gain of a Micromegas detector could reach up to 10^5 with a uniformity of better than 10% when the size of the avalanche gap was optimized thanks to the flexibility of the TBM in defining the gap. Additionally, the TBM facilitates the exploration of new detector structures based on Micromegas owing to the much-simplified operation with the method.

BAUM: A DNA Assembler by Adaptive Unique Mapping and Local Overlap-Layout-Consensus

Genome assembly from the high-throughput sequencing (HTS) reads is a fundamental yet challenging computational problem. An intrinsic challenge is the uncertainty caused by the widespread repetitive elements. Here we get around the uncertainty using the notion of uniquely mapped (UM) reads, which motivated the design of a new assembler BAUM. It mainly consists of two types of iterations. The first type of iterations constructs initial contigs from a reference, say a genome of a species that could be quite distant, by adaptive read mapping, filtration by the reference's unique regions, and reference updating. A statistical test is proposed to split the layouts at possible structural variation sites. The second type of iterations includes mapping, scaffolding/contig-extension, and contig merging. We extend each contig by locally assembling the reads whose mates are uniquely mapped to an end of the contig. Instead of the de Bruijn graph method, we take the overlap-layout-consensus (OLC) paradigm. The OLC is implemented by parallel computation, and has linear complexity with respect to the number of contigs. The adjacent extended contigs are merged if their alignment is confirmed by the adjusted gap distance. Throughout the assembling, the mapping criterion is selected by probabilistic calculations. These innovations can be used complementary to the existing de novo assemblers. Applying this novel method to the assembly of wild rice Oryza longistaminata genome, we achieved much improved contig N50, 18.8k, compared with other assemblers. The assembly was further validated by contigs constructed from an independent library of long 454 reads.
