Chemotaxis guidance of random walkers modeling self-wiring of neural networks

A stochastic walker model is proposed to describe the chemotactic guidance of growth cones, i.e. the tips of developing neurites. The model accounts for the influence of both attractive and repulsive chemical cues, which are emitted by the growth cones and the somas. The system couples stochastic differential equations governing the motion of the growth cones with reaction-diffusion equations that describe the dynamics of the chemical concentrations. The existence of a unique solution to this coupled system is proved. Numerical experiments are performed to investigate the sensitivity of the model to key biological parameters. The impact of the nonlocal regularization of point sources in the reaction-diffusion equations is analyzed in a simplified deterministic setting.

Weak-strong uniqueness for general cross-diffusion systems with volume filling

The weak-strong uniqueness of solutions to a broad class of cross-diffusion systems with volume filling is established. In general, the diffusion matrices are neither symmetric nor positive definite. This issue is overcome by supposing that the equations possess a Boltzmann-type entropy structure, which ensures the existence of bounded weak solutions. In this framework, general conditions on the mobility matrix are identified that allow for the proof of the weak-strong uniqueness property by means of the relative entropy method. The core idea consists in analyzing an augmented mobility matrix that is positive definite only on a specific subspace. Several examples that meet the required assumptions are provided, together with a discussion on possible extensions.

Stability and uniqueness of bounded weak solutions to triangular degenerate cross-diffusion systems

The continuous dependence on the initial data and consequently the uniqueness of bounded weak solutions to a class of triangular reaction-cross-diffusion equations is shown. The class includes two-species doubly degenerate equations for nutrient taxis models describing the response of bacteria to nutrient conditions. The key difficulty is the lack of a gradient bound for the difference of the first component of the solution, due to the degeneracy. This issue is overcome by assuming a nonstandard Lipschitz-type condition, applying the $H^{-1}$ method, and carefully combining various estimations.

Cross-diffusion limits in multispecies kinetic models

Cross-diffusion systems are formally derived from multispecies kinetic models in the diffusion limit. The first limit in the multispecies BGK model of Gross and Krook leads to a variant of the non-isothermal Maxwell-Stefan equations. The second limit in a BGK model with Brinkman-type force term yields generalized Busenberg-Travis equations, which reduce for constant temperature to the classical Busenberg-Travis system for segregating population species. Entropy equalities are derived for the kinetic and cross-diffusion equations.

Existence analysis of a three-species memristor drift-diffusion system coupled to electric networks

The existence of global weak solutions to a partial-differential-algebraic system is proved. The system consists of the drift-diffusion equations for the electron, hole, and oxide vacancy densities in a memristor device, the Poisson equation for the electric potential, and the differential-algebraic equations for an electric network. The memristor device is modeled by a two-dimensional bounded domain, and mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions for the electron and hole densities as well as the potential are imposed. The coupling is realized via the total current through the memristor terminal and the network node potentials at the terminals. The network equations are decomposed in a differential and an algebraic part. The existence proof is based on the Leray-Schauder fixed-point theorem, a priori estimates coming from the free energy inequality, and a logarithmic-type Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. It is shown, under suitable assumptions, that the solutions are bounded and strictly positive.

Convergence of a finite volume scheme and dissipative measure-valued-strong stability for a hyperbolic-parabolic cross-diffusion system

This article is concerned with the development of a theoretical framework of global measure-valued solutions for a class of hyperbolic-parabolic cross-diffusion systems, and its application to the convergence analysis of a fully discrete finite-volume scheme. After introducing an appropriate notion of dissipative measure-valued solutions to the PDE system, a numerical scheme is proposed which is shown to generate, in the continuum limit, a dissipative measure-valued solution. The parabolic density part of the limiting measure-valued solution is atomic and converges to its constant state for long times. Furthermore, it is proved that whenever the PDE system possesses a strong solution, the convergence of the approximation scheme holds in the strong sense. The results are based on Young measure theory and a weak-strong stability estimate combining Shannon and Rao entropies. The convergence of the numerical scheme is achieved by means of discrete entropy dissipation inequalities and an artificial diffusion, which vanishes in the continuum limit.

Global martingale solutions for stochastic Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto population models

The existence of global nonnegative martingale solutions to cross-diffusion systems of Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto type with multiplicative noise is proven. The model describes the stochastic segregation dynamics of an arbitrary number of population species in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions. The diffusion matrix is generally neither symmetric nor positive semidefinite, which excludes standard methods for evolution equations. Instead, the existence proof is based on the entropy structure of the model, a novel regularization of the entropy variable, higher-order moment estimates, and fractional time regularity. The regularization technique is generic and is applied to the population system with self-diffusion in any space dimension and without self-diffusion in two space dimensions.

Maximal dissipation and well-posedness of the Euler system of gas dynamics

We show that any dissipative (measure-valued) solution of the compressible Euler system that complies with Dafermos' criterion of maximal dissipation is necessarily an admissible weak solution. In addition, we propose a simple, at most two step, selection procedure to identify a unique semigroup solution in the class of dissipative solutions to the Euler system. Finally, we introduce a refined version of Dafermos' criterion yielding a unique solution of the problem for any finite energy initial data.

Analysis of a Poisson-Nernst-Planck cross-diffusion system with steric effects

A transient Poisson-Nernst-Planck system with steric effects is analyzed in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions for the ion concentrations and mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions for the electric potential. The steric repulsion of ions is modeled by a localized Lennard-Jones force, leading to cross-diffusion terms. The existence of global weak solutions, a weak--strong uniqueness property, and, in case of pure Neumann conditions, the exponential decay towards the thermal equilibrium state is proved. The main difficulties are the cross-diffusion terms and the different boundary conditions satisfied by the unknowns. These issues are overcome by exploiting the entropy structure of the equations and carefully taking into account the electric potential term. A numerical experiment illustrates the long-time behavior of the solutions when the potential satisfies mixed boundary conditions.

Charge transport systems with Fermi-Dirac statistics for memristors

An instationary drift-diffusion system for the electron, hole, and oxygen vacancy densities, coupled to the Poisson equation for the electric potential, is analyzed in a bounded domain with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The electron and hole densities are governed by Fermi-Dirac statistics, while the oxygen vacancy density is governed by Blakemore statistics. The equations model the charge carrier dynamics in memristive devices used in semiconductor technology. The global existence of weak solutions is proved in up to three space dimensions. The proof is based on the free energy inequality, an iteration argument to improve the integrability of the densities, and estimations of the Fermi-Dirac integral. Under a physically realistic elliptic regularity condition, it is proved that the densities are bounded.

Bayesian inversion for the identification of the doping profile in unipolar semiconductor devices

A rigorous Bayesian formulation of the inverse doping profile problem in infinite dimensions for a stationary linearized unipolar drift-diffusion model for semiconductor devices is given. The goal is to estimate the posterior probability distribution of the doping profile and to compute its posterior mean. This allows for the reconstruction of the doping profile from voltage-current measurements. The well-posedness of the Bayesian inverse problem is shown by proving boundedness and continuity properties of the semiconductor model with respect to the unknown parameter. A preconditioned Crank-Nicolson Markov chain Monte-Carlo method for the Bayesian estimation of the doping profile, using a physics-informed prior model, is proposed. The numerical results for a two-dimensional diode illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.

Global weak solutions to a fractional Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system in lymphangiogenesis

A spectral-fractional Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system, which describes the pre-patterning of lymphatic vessel morphology in collagen gels, is studied. The model consists of two higher-order quasilinear parabolic equations and describes the evolution of the fiber phase volume fraction and the solute concentration. The free energy consists of the nonconvex Flory-Huggins energy and a fractional gradient energy, modeling nonlocal long-range correlations. The existence of global weak solutions to this system in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is shown. The proof is based on a three-level approximation scheme, spectral-fractional calculus, and a priori estimates coming from the energy inequality.

A nonlocal regularization of a generalized Busenberg-Travis cross-diffusion system

A cross-diffusion system with Lotka-Volterra reaction terms in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is analyzed. The system is a nonlocal regularization of a generalized Busenberg-Travis model, which describes segregating population species with local averaging. The partial velocities are the solutions of an elliptic regularization of Darcy's law, which can be interpreted as a Brinkman's law. The following results are proved: the existence of global weak solutions; localization limit; boundedness and uniqueness of weak solutions (in one space dimension); exponential decay of the solutions. Moreover, the weak-strong uniqueness property for the limiting system is shown.

Structure-preserving semi-convex-splitting numerical scheme for a Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system in lymphangiogenesis

A fully discrete semi-convex-splitting finite-element scheme with stabilization for a Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system is analyzed. The system consists of parabolic fourth-order equations for the volume fraction of the fiber phase and solute concentration, modeling pre-patterning of lymphatic vessel morphology. The existence of discrete solutions is proved, and it is shown that the numerical scheme is energy stable up to stabilization, conserves the solute mass, and preserves the lower and upper bounds of the fiber phase fraction. Numerical experiments in two space dimensions using FreeFEM illustrate the phase segregation and pattern formation.

Fluctuations around the mean-field limit for attractive Riesz potentials in the moderate regime

A central limit theorem is shown for moderately interacting particles in the whole space. The interaction potential approximates singular attractive or repulsive potentials of sub-Coulomb type. It is proved that the fluctuations become asymptotically Gaussians in the limit of infinitely many particles. The methodology is inspired by the classical work of Oelschläger on fluctuations for the porous-medium equation. The novelty in this work is that we can allow for attractive potentials in the moderate regime and still obtain asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations. The key element of the proof is the mean-square convergence in expectation for smoothed empirical measures associated to moderately interacting $N$-particle systems with rate $N^{-1/2-\varepsilon}$ for some $\varepsilon>0$. To allow for attractive potentials, the proof uses a quantitative mean-field convergence in probability with any algebraic rate and a law-of-large-numbers estimate as well as a systematic separation of the terms to be estimated in a mean-field part and a law-of-large-numbers part.

Global weak solutions for a nonlocal multispecies Fokker-Planck-Landau system

The global-in-time existence of weak solutions to a spatially homogeneous multispecies Fokker-Planck-Landau system for plasmas in the three-dimensional whole space is shown. The Fokker-Planck-Landau system is a simplification of the Landau equations assuming a linearized, velocity-independent, and isotropic kernel. The resulting equations depend nonlocally and nonlinearly on the moments of the distribution functions via the multispecies local Maxwellians. The existence proof is based on a three-level approximation scheme, energy and entropy estimates, as well as compactness results, and it holds for both soft and hard potentials.

Existence of global weak solutions to a Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system in lymphangiogenesis

The global-in-time existence of weak solutions to a degenerate Cahn-Hilliard cross-diffusion system with singular potential in a bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions is proved. The model consists of two coupled parabolic fourth-order partial differential equations and describes the evolution of the fiber phase volume fraction and the solute concentration, modeling the pre-patterning of lymphatic vessel morphology. The fiber phase fraction satisfies the segregation property if this holds initially. The existence proof is based on a three-level approximation scheme and a priori estimates coming from the energy and entropy inequalities. While the free energy is nonincreasing in time, the entropy is only bounded because of the cross-diffusion coupling.

Degenerate drift-diffusion systems for memristors

A system of degenerate drift-diffusion equations for the electron, hole, and oxygen vacancy densities, coupled to the Poisson equation for the electric potential, is analyzed in a three-dimensional bounded domain with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. The equations model the dynamics of the charge carriers in a memristor device in the high-density regime. Memristors can be seen as nonlinear resistors with memory, mimicking the conductance response of biological synapses. The global existence of weak solutions and the weak-strong uniqueness property is proved. Thanks to the degenerate diffusion, better regularity results compared to linear diffusion can be shown, in particular the boundedness of the solutions.
