Floquet SYK wormholes

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of two coupled SYK models, conjectured to be holographically dual to an eternal traversable wormhole in AdS$_2$. We consider different periodic drivings of the parameters of the system. We analyze the energy flows in the wormhole and black hole phases of the model as a function of the driving frequency. Our numerical results show a series of resonant frequencies in which the energy absorption and heating are enhanced significantly and the transmission coefficients drop, signalling a closure of the wormhole. These frequencies correspond to part of the conformal tower of states and to the boundary graviton of the dual gravitational theory. Furthermore, we provide evidence supporting the existence of a hot wormhole phase between the black hole and wormhole phases. When driving the strength of the separate SYK terms we find that the transmission can be enhanced by suitably tuning the driving.

Perturbative renormalization of the $T \bar{T}$-deformed free massive Dirac fermion

In this paper we explicitly carry out the perturbative renormalization of the $T\bar{T}$-deformed free massive Dirac fermion in two dimensions up to second order in the coupling constant. This is done by computing the two-to-two $S$-matrix using the LSZ reduction formula and canceling out the divergences by introducing counterterms. We demonstrate that the renormalized Lagrangian is unambiguously determined by demanding that it gives the correct $S$-matrix of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed integrable field theory. Remarkably, the renormalized Lagrangian is qualitatively very different from its classical counterpart.

Composite operators in $T\bar T$-deformed free QFTs

We study perturbative renormalization of the composite operators in the $T\bar T$-deformed two-dimensional free field theories. The pattern of renormalization for the stress-energy tensor is different in the massive and massless cases. While in the latter case the canonical stress tensor is not renormalized up to high order in the perturbative expansion, in the massive theory there are induced counterterms at linear order. For a massless theory our results match the general formula derived recently in [1].

The large $N$ phase diagram of ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons theory with one fundamental chiral multiplet

We study the theory of a single fundamental fermion and boson coupled to Chern-Simons theory at leading order in the large $N$ limit. Utilizing recent progress in understanding the Higgsed phase in Chern-Simons-Matter theories, we compute the quantum effective potential that is exact to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling for the lightest scalar operator of this theory at finite temperature. Specializing to the zero temperature limit we use this potential to determine the phase diagram of the large $N$ ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric theory with this field content. This intricate two dimensional phase diagram has four topological phases that are separated by lines of first and second order phase transitions and includes special conformal points at which the infrared dynamics is governed by Chern-Simons theory coupled respectively to free bosons, Gross-Neveu fermions, and to a theory of Wilson-Fisher bosons plus free fermions. We also describe the vacuum structure of the most general ${\cal N} = 1$ supersymmetric theory with one fundamental boson and one fundamental fermion coupled to an $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons gauge field, at arbitrary values of the 't Hooft coupling.

Duality and an exact Landau-Ginzburg potential for quasi-bosonic Chern-Simons-Matter theories

It has been conjectured that Chern-Simons (CS) gauged `regular' bosons in the fundamental representation are `level-rank' dual to CS gauged critical fermions also in the fundamental representation. Generic relevant deformations of these conformal field theories lead to one of two distinct massive phases. In previous work, the large $N$ thermal free energy for the bosonic theory in the unHiggsed phase has been demonstrated to match the corresponding fermionic results under duality. In this note we evaluate the large $N$ thermal free energy of the bosonic theory in the Higgsed phase and demonstrate that our results, again, perfectly match the predictions of duality. Our computation is performed in a unitary gauge by integrating out the physical excitations of the theory - i.e. W bosons - at all orders in the 't Hooft coupling. Our results allow us to construct an exact quantum effective potential for ${\bar ϕ} ϕ$, the lightest gauge invariant scalar operator in the theory. In the zero temperature limit this exact Landau-Ginzburg potential is non-analytic at ${\bar ϕϕ}=0$. The extrema of this effective potential at positive ${\bar ϕ}ϕ$ solve the gap equations in the Higgsed phase while the extrema at negative ${\bar ϕ} ϕ$ solve the gap equations in the unHiggsed phase. Our effective potential is bounded from below only for a certain range of $x_6$ (the parameter that governs sextic interactions of $ϕ$). This observation suggests that the regular boson theory has a stable vacuum only when $x_6$ lies in this range.

Bose-Fermi Chern-Simons Dualities in the Higgsed Phase

It has been conjectured that fermions minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field define a conformal field theory (CFT) that is level-rank dual to Chern-Simons gauged Wilson-Fisher Bosons. The CFTs in question admit relevant deformations parametrized by a real mass. When the mass deformation is positive, the duality of the two deformed theories has previously been checked in detail in the large $N$ limit by comparing explicit all orders results on both sides of the duality. In this paper we perform a similar check for the case of negative mass deformations. In this case the bosonic field condenses triggering the Higgs mechanism. The effective excitations in this phase are massive $W$ bosons. By summing all leading large $N$ graphs involving these $W$ bosons we find an all orders (in the 't Hooft coupling) result for the thermal free energy of the bosonic theory in the condensed phase. Our final answer perfectly matches the previously obtained fermionic free energy under the conjectured duality map.

Notes on Melonic $O(N)^{q-1}$ Tensor Models

It has recently been demonstrated that the large N limit of a model of fermions charged under the global/gauge symmetry group $O(N)^{q-1}$ agrees with the large $N$ limit of the SYK model. In these notes we investigate aspects of the dynamics of the $O(N)^{q-1}$ theories that differ from their SYK counterparts. We argue that the spectrum of fluctuations about the finite temperature saddle point in these theories has $(q-1)\frac{N^2}{2}$ new light modes in addition to the light Schwarzian mode that exists even in the SYK model, suggesting that the bulk dual description of theories differ significantly if they both exist. We also study the thermal partition function of a mass deformed version of the SYK model. At large mass we show that the effective entropy of this theory grows with energy like $E \ln E$ (i.e. faster than Hagedorn) up to energies of order $N^2$. The canonical partition function of the model displays a deconfinement or Hawking Page type phase transition at temperatures of order $1/\ln N$. We derive these results in the large mass limit but argue that they are qualitatively robust to small corrections in $J/m$.

On Holographic Rényi Entropy in Some Modified Theories of Gravity

We perform a detailed analysis of holographic entanglement Rényi entropy in some modified theories of gravity with four dimensional conformal field theory duals. First, we construct perturbative black hole solutions in a recently proposed model of Einsteinian cubic gravity in five dimensions, and compute the Rényi entropy as well as the scaling dimension of the twist operators in the dual field theory. Consistency of these results are verified from the AdS/CFT correspondence, via a corresponding computation of the Weyl anomaly on the gravity side. Similar analyses are then carried out for three other examples of modified gravity in five dimensions that include a chemical potential, namely Born-Infeld gravity, charged quasi-topological gravity and a class of Weyl corrected gravity theories with a gauge field, with the last example being treated perturbatively. Some interesting bounds in the dual conformal field theory parameters in quasi-topological gravity are pointed out. We also provide arguments on the validity of our perturbative analysis, whenever applicable.

Information Geometry in Time Dependent Quantum Systems and the Geometric Phase

We study information theoretic geometry in time dependent quantum mechanical systems. First, we discuss global properties of the parameter manifold for two level systems exemplified by i) Rabi oscillations and ii) quenching dynamics of the XY spin chain in a transverse magnetic field, when driven across anisotropic criticality. Next, we comment upon the nature of the geometric phase from classical holonomy analyses of such parameter manifolds. In the context of the transverse XY model in the thermodynamic limit, our results are in contradiction to those in the existing literature, and we argue why the issue deserves a more careful analysis. Finally, we speculate on a novel geometric phase in the model, when driven across a quantum critical line.

Holographic Thermalization with Weyl Corrections

We consider holographic thermalization in the presence of a Weyl correction in five dimensional AdS space. We first obtain the Weyl corrected black brane solution perturbatively, up to first order in the coupling. The corresponding AdS-Vaidya like solution is then constructed. This is then used to numerically analyze the time dependence of the two point correlation functions and the expectation values of rectangular Wilson loops in the boundary field theory, and we discuss how the Weyl correction can modify the thermalization time scales in the dual field theory. In this context, the subtle interplay between the Weyl coupling constant and the chemical potential is studied in detail.

Thermodynamics and Entanglement Entropy with Weyl Corrections

We consider charged black holes in four dimensional AdS space, in the presence of a Weyl correction. We obtain the solution including the effect of back-reaction, perturbatively up to first order in the Weyl coupling, and study its thermodynamic properties. This is complemented by a calculation of the holographic entanglement entropy of the boundary theory. The consistency of results obtained from both computations is established.

Very General Holographic Superconductors and Entanglement Thermodynamics

We construct and analyze holographic superconductors with generalized higher derivative couplings, in single R-charged black hole backgrounds in four and five dimensions. These systems, which we call very general holographic superconductors, have multiple tuning parameters and are shown to exhibit a rich phase structure. We establish the phase diagram numerically as well as by computing the free energy, and then validated the results by calculating the entanglement entropy for these systems. The entanglement entropy is shown to be a perfect indicator of the phase diagram. The differences in the nature of the entanglement entropy in R-charged backgrounds compared to the AdS-Schwarzschild cases are pointed out. We also compute the analogue of the entangling temperature for a subclass of these systems and compare the results with non-hairy backgrounds.

Generalized Holographic Superconductors with Higher Derivative Couplings

We introduce and study generalized holographic superconductors with higher derivative couplings between the field strength tensor and a complex scalar field, in four dimensional AdS black hole backgrounds. We study this theory in the probe limit, as well as with backreaction. There are multiple tuning parameters in the theory, and with two non-zero parameters, we show that the theory has a rich phase structure, and in particular, the transition from the normal to the superconducting phase can be tuned to be of first order or of second order within a window of one of these. This is established numerically as well as by computing the free energy of the boundary theory. We further present analytical results for the critical temperature of the model, and compare these with numerical analysis. Optical properties of this system are also studied numerically in the probe limit, and our results show evidence for negative refraction at low frequencies.

Fermi Normal Coordinates and Fermion Curvature Couplings in General Relativity

We study gravitational curvature effects in circular and radial geodesics in static, spherically symmetric space-times, using Fermi normal coordinates. We first set up these coordinates in the general case, and then use this to study effective magnetic fields due to gravitational curvature in the exterior and interior Schwarzschild, Janis-Newman-Winicour, and Bertrand space-times. We show that these fields can be large for specific parameter values in the theories, and thus might have observational significance. We discuss the qualitative differences of the magnetic field for vacuum space-times and for those seeded by matter. We estimate the magnitude of these fields in realistic galactic scenarios and discuss their possible experimental relevance. Gravitational curvature corrections to the Hydrogen atom spectrum for these space-times are also discussed briefly.

Scalar Radiation in the Background of a Naked Singularity

We study scalar radiation spectra from a particle in circular orbit, in the background of the Janis-Newman-Winicour (JNW) naked singularity. The differences in the nature of the spectra, from what one obtains with a Schwarzschild black hole, is established. We also compute the angular distribution of the spectra.

Information Geometry and Quantum Phase Transitions in the Dicke Model

We study information geometry of the Dicke model, in the thermodynamic limit. The scalar curvature $R$ of the Riemannian metric tensor induced on the parameter space of the model is calculated. We analyze this both with and without the rotating wave approximation, and show that the parameter manifold is smooth even at the phase transition, and that the scalar curvature is continuous across the phase boundary.

Information Geometry, Phase Transitions, and Widom Lines : Magnetic and Liquid Systems

We study information geometry of the thermodynamics of first and second order phase transitions, and beyond criticality, in magnetic and liquid systems. We establish a universal microscopic characterization of such phase transitions via the equality of correlation lengths $ξ$ in coexisting phases, where $ξ$ is related to the scalar curvature of the equilibrium thermodynamic state space. The 1-D Ising model, and the mean-field Curie-Weiss model are discussed, and we show that information geometry correctly describes the phase behavior for the latter. The Widom lines for these systems are also established. We further study a simple model for the thermodynamics of liquid-liquid phase co-existence, and show that our method provides a simple and direct way to obtain its phase behavior and the locations of the Widom lines. Our analysis points towards multiple Widom lines in liquid systems.
