Unbroken $SU(2)$ at a 100 TeV collider

A future 100 TeV pp collider will explore energies much higher than the scale of electroweak (EW) symmetry breaking. In this paper we study some of the phenomenological consequences of this fact, concentrating on enhanced bremsstrahlung of EW gauge bosons. We survey a handful of possible new physics experimental searches one can pursue at a 100 TeV collider using this phenomenon. The most dramatic effect is the non-negligible radiation of EW gauge bosons from neutrinos, making them partly visible objects. The presence of collinear EW radiation allows for the full reconstruction of neutrinos under certain circumstances. We also show that the presence of EW radiation allows one to distinguish the $SU(2)$ quantum numbers of various new physics particles. We consider examples of two completely different new physics paradigms, additional gauge groups and SUSY, where the bremsstrahlung radiation of $W$ and $Z$ from $W'$s, $Z'$s or stops allows one to determine the couplings and the mixing angles of the new particles (respectively). Finally, we show how the emission of $W$s and $Z$s from high $p_T$ Higgs bosons can be used to test the couplings of new physics to the Higgs boson.

New self dualities and duality cascades

New self-dualities involving two index tensors are derived. These new self-dualities are used to build various duality cascades. Both vector like and chiral cascades are presented. Aside from ending in confinement, these duality cascades can also end in interacting conformal field theories, free field theories, and meta-stable supersymmetry breaking. Higgsing effects are built into the self-duality so that when the gauge groups are small enough, supersymmetry is broken through the rank condition. Dynamical supersymmetry restoration occurs far from the SUSY breaking vacuum resulting in a long lived meta-stable vacuum. It is found that Coulomb branches are critical in the stabilization of runaways and dynamical supersymmetry restoration.

Minimal Signatures of Naturalness

We study the naturalness problem using a model independent bottom up approach by considering models where only the interaction terms needed to cancel the Higgs quadratic divergences are present. If quadratic divergences are canceled by terms linear in the Higgs field, then the collider phenomenology is well covered by current electroweakino and fourth generation searches. If quadratic divergences are canceled by terms bilinear in the Higgs field, then the signatures are highly dependent on the quantum numbers of the new particles. Precision Higgs measurements can reveal the presence of new particles with either vevs or Standard Model charges. If the new particles are scalar dark matter candidates, their direct and indirect detection signatures will be highly correlated and within the reach of XENON100 and Fermi. Observation at one of these experiments would imply observation at the other one. Observable LHC decay channels can also arise if the new particles mix with lighter states. This decay channel involves only the Higgs boson and not the gauge bosons. Observation of such decays would give evidence that the new particle is tied to the naturalness problem.

S-duality of nonsupersymmetric gauge theories

We propose a method for constructing pairs of nonsupersymmetric gauge theories related by S-duality. Starting from a known S-duality of supersymmetric theories realized on the worldvolume of D3 branes in type IIB string theory, a new duality is obtained by replacing the D3-branes with antibranes. Large classes of dual pairs of nonsupersymmetric theories can be obtained in this way, with different interactions and matter content (chiral and vector-like). The approach is illustrated on gauge theories realized on three-branes and fractional branes probing orbifold singularities. The duality sheds light on the dynamics of gauge theories and their possible infrared phases by providing concrete magnetic dual descriptions of strongly coupled theories. Some of the models share various properties with QCD, including confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. More generally, these theories feature fermions in multiple two-index representations and could realize intriguing phases such as a free magnetic phase with chiral symmetry breaking or mixed phases where an interacting fixed point coexists with a confining phase.

Naturalness from stop decays

In supersymmetric theories, there is a scalar quartic related to the top and bottom yukawas that gives LHC observable decays of the stop or sbottom. After electroweak symmetry breaking, this quartic induces the decay of the stop (sbottom) to a charged Higgs and the sbottom (stop) without allowing for the corresponding channel involving the W boson. Unlike other scalar quartics, this scalar quartic is measurable at the LHC and for compressed spectra may even be the discovery channel for the stop or sbottom. Observing this decay and measuring the value of the quartic interaction would give direct evidence that the underlying theory is supersymmetric as only a fermionic symmetry can relate a scalar quartic to a yukawa interaction. This decay pathway is explored and situations where it can be the dominant decay mode for either the stop or the sbottom are highlighted. Measurement of this decay mode at the LHC would unambiguously show that the underlying theory of nature was supersymmetric.

Learning How to Count: A High Multiplicity Search for the LHC

We introduce a search technique that is sensitive to a broad class of signals with large final state multiplicities. Events are clustered into large radius jets and jet substructure techniques are used to count the number of subjets within each jet. The search consists of a cut on the total number of subjets in the event as well as the summed jet mass and missing energy. Two different techniques for counting subjets are described and expected sensitivities are presented for eight benchmark signals. These signals exhibit diverse phenomenology, including 2-step cascade decays, direct three body decays, and multi-top final states. We find improved sensitivity to these signals as compared to previous high multiplicity searches as well as a reduced reliance on missing energy requirements. One benefit of this approach is that it allows for natural data driven estimates of the QCD background.

Supersymmetric Defect Models and Mirror Symmetry

We study supersymmetric field theories in three space-time dimensions doped by various configurations of electric charges or magnetic fluxes. These are supersymmetric avatars of impurity models. In the presence of additional sources such configurations are shown to preserve half of the supersymmetries. Mirror symmetry relates the two sets of configurations. We discuss the implications for impurity models in 3d N=4 QED with a single charged hypermultiplet (and its mirror, the theory of a free hypermultiplet) as well as 3d N=2 QED with one flavor and its dual, a supersymmetric Wilson-Fisher fixed point. Mirror symmetry allows us to find backreacted solutions for arbitrary arrays of defects in the IR limit of N=4 QED. Our analysis, complemented with appropriate string theory brane constructions, sheds light on various aspects of mirror symmetry, the map between particles and vortices and the emergence of ground state entropy in QED at finite density.

An Attractor for Natural Supersymmetry

We propose an attractor mechanism which generates the "more minimal" supersymmetric standard model from a broad class of supersymmetry breaking boundary conditions. The hierarchies in the fermion masses and mixings are produced by the same dynamics and a natural weak scale results from gaugino mediation. These features arise from augmenting the standard model with a new SU(3) gauge group under which only the third generation quarks are charged. The theory flows to a strongly interacting fixed point which induces a negative anomalous dimension for the third generation quarks and a positive anomalous dimension for the Higgs. As a result, a split-family natural spectrum and the flavor hierarchies are dynamically generated.

High Multiplicity Searches at the LHC Using Jet Masses

This article introduces a new class of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model that improves the sensitivity to signals with high jet multiplicity. The proposed searches gain access to high multiplicity signals by reclustering events into large-radius, or "fat," jets and by requiring that each event has multiple massive jets. This technique is applied to supersymmetric scenarios in which gluinos are pair-produced and then subsequently decay to final states with either moderate quantities of missing energy or final states without missing energy. In each of these scenarios, the use of jet mass improves the estimated reach in gluino mass by 20 % to 50 % over current LHC searches.

A test for emergent dynamics

A generalization of a-maximization is proposed that maximizes a subject to inequalities rather than equalities. The implication of this conjecture is that in the absence of emergent symmetries, there is a maximum R-charge for fields appearing in the path integral. This maximum R-charge leads to a novel way of detecting emergent Abelian symmetries and non-Abelian gauge symmetries.

Jet Dipolarity: Top Tagging with Color Flow

A new jet observable, dipolarity, is introduced that can distinguish whether a pair of subjets arises from a color singlet source. This observable is incorporated into the HEPTopTagger and is shown to improve discrimination between top jets and QCD jets for moderate to high pT.

Comments on Gaugino Screening

Gauge mediated models of supersymmetry breaking often exhibit "gaugino screening," where to leading order in F, gaugino masses are unaffected by higher dimensional Kahler potential interactions between the supersymmetry breaking spurion and the messengers. We provide a derivation of this phenomenon which utilizes the gaugino counterterm originally proposed in the context of anomaly mediation by Dine and Seiberg. We argue that this counterterm is present when there are non-zero messenger F-terms, and can cancel the leading order Feynman diagram contribution to the gaugino mass. We provide a nontrivial check of the regulator independence of our results by performing the computation using both dimensional reduction and Pauli-Villars. This analysis reconciles an apparent contradiction between diagrammatics and analytic continuation into superspace.

Phases of N=1 supersymmetric chiral gauge theories

We analyze the phases of supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with an antisymmetric tensor and (anti)fundamental flavors, in the presence of a classically marginal superpotential deformation. Varying the number of flavors that appear in the superpotential reveals rich infrared chiral dynamics and novel dualities. The dualities are characterized by an infinite family of magnetic duals with arbitrarily large gauge groups describing the same fixed point, correlated with arbitrarily large classical global symmetries that are truncated nonperturbatively. At the origin of moduli space, these theories exhibit a phase with confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, an interacting nonabelian Coulomb phase, and phases where an interacting sector coexists with a sector that either s-confines or is in a free magnetic phase. Properties of these intriguing "mixed phases" are studied in detail using duality and a-maximization, and the presence of superpotential interactions provides further insights into their formation.

Unitarity constraints on asymmetric freeze-in

This paper considers unitarity and CPT constraints on asymmetric freeze-in, the use of freeze-in to store baryon number in a dark sector. In this scenario, Sakharov's out of equilibrium condition is satisfied by placing the visible and hidden sectors at different temperatures while a net visible baryon number is produced by storing negative baryon number in a dark sector. It is shown that unitarity and CPT lead to unexpected cancellations. In particular, the transfer of baryon number cancels completely at leading order.

A microscopic theory of gauge mediation

We construct models of indirect gauge mediation where the dynamics responsible for breaking supersymmetry simultaneously generates a weakly coupled subsector of messengers. This provides a microscopic realization of messenger gauge mediation where the messenger and hidden sector fields are unified into a single sector. The UV theory is SQCD with massless and massive quarks plus singlets, and at low energies it flows to a weakly coupled quiver gauge theory. One node provides the primary source of supersymmetry breaking, which is then transmitted to the node giving rise to the messenger fields. These models break R-symmetry spontaneously, produce realistic gaugino and sfermion masses, and give a heavy gravitino.

New dynamics and dualities in supersymmetric chiral gauge theories

We analyze the phase structure of supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with gauge group SU(N), an antisymmetric, and F<N+4 flavors, in the presence of a cubic superpotential. When F=N+3 the theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the infrared, and new dual descriptions of this theory are uncovered. The theory with odd N admits a self-dual magnetic description. For general N, we find an infinite family of magnetic dual descriptions, characterized by arbitrarily large gauge groups and additional classical global symmetries that are truncated by nonperturbative effects. The infrared dynamics of these theories are analyzed using a-maximization, which supports the claim that all these theories flow to the same superconformal fixed point. A very rich phase structure is found when the number of flavors is reduced below N+3, including a new self-dual point, transitions from conformal to confining, and a nonperturbative instability for F<N+1. We also give examples of chiral theories with antisymmetrics that have nonchiral duals.

Model Independent Bounds on Kinetic Mixing

New Abelian vector bosons can kinetically mix with the hypercharge gauge boson of the Standard Model. This letter computes the model independent limits on vector bosons with masses from 1 GeV to 1 TeV. The limits arise from the numerous e+e- experiments that have been performed in this energy range and bound the kinetic mixing by epsilon < 0.03 for most of the mass range studied, regardless of any additional interactions that the new vector boson may have.

Collective Quartics from Simple Groups

This article classifies Little Higgs models that have collective quartic couplings. There are two classes of collective quartics: Special Cosets and Special Quartics. After taking into account dangerous singlets, the smallest Special Coset models are SU(5)/SO(5) and SU(6)/Sp(6). The smallest Special Quartic model is SU(5)/SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) and has not previously been considered as a candidate Little Higgs model.
