Ising surface defects can get dirty

Real critical systems, such as uniaxial ferromagnets in the 3d Ising universality class, are constrained by boundaries and subject to random couplings. We consider the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in $4-ε$ dimensions subject to a random magnetic field localized on a two-dimensional surface, which becomes co-dimension 1 in the physical $ε\to1$ limit. Using the replica method for the disordered field, we find that the ordinary boundary condition is stable under disorder but also discover a non-trivial ``dirty" boundary condition which can be reached by tuning the disorder strength or the local temperature. We also investigate the logarithmic structure of the defect spectrum and how it emerges via the replica formalism.

Irrational CFTs from coupled anyon chains with non-invertible symmetries?

Irrational CFTs in 1+1d with a discrete spectrum and no conserved currents other than the stress-tensor are expected to be generic, unsolvable by standard methods, and hard to construct explicitly. We introduce a lattice model that realizes a candidate for such a CFT as a conformal phase of matter without fine-tuning. The model is constructed by coupling $N\geq3$ golden anyon chains together, preserving $N$ copies of the Fibonacci non-invertible symmetry. We use the MPS/DMRG approach to study this model numerically, which allows us to calculate the corresponding conformal data, obtaining hints of its irrationality. Along the way, we characterize the phase diagram for $N=2$ coupled chains where we identify a weakly first-order phase transition as well as critical points that we are able to identify with known rational CFTs, except for one case. We also provide an extensive list of rational CFTs with $1<c<2.1$.

A new Ising/tricritical-Ising interface: From ${W}_3$ symmetry to Rydberg atoms

We consider interfaces between critical spin-chains in different universality classes, described in the continuum limit by defect/interface conformal field theory (DCFT/ICFT). We find a new conformal interface between the Tricritical Ising (TIM) and the Ising CFT. We also explore the possibility of its experimental realizations in the context of Rydberg atom arrays. Our analysis emphasizes non-invertible symmetries and consistency under modular transformations, and uses defect couplings and the defect spectrum -- including in the case of mixed boundary conditions -- to make sharp experimental predictions. The structure of the observables hinges on a newly discovered pattern of emergent ${W}_3$ chiral symmetry for the Tricritical-Ising/Ising interface.

Taxonomy of coupled minimal models from finite groups

Fixed points of $N$ coupled Virasoro minimal models have recently been argued to provide large classes of compact unitary CFTs with $c>1$ and only Virasoro chiral symmetry. In this paper, we vastly increase the set of such potential irrational fixed points by considering couplings that break the maximal $G=S_N$ symmetry into various subgroups $H\subset G$. We rigorously classify all the fixed points with $N=4,5$ and do an extensive search for solutions of the beta function equations with $N\geq6$. In particular, we find non-trivial fixed points with $H=\mathbb{Z}_{N-1} \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2, \, S_{M}\times S_{N-M}$ and rigorously prove that real fixed points with $H=(S_{N/2}\times S_{N/2})\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ exist for all even $N\geq6$. We also identify fixed points with finite Lie-type symmetry $H=\rm{PSL}_2(N)\subset S_N$ where $N=7,11,13$ and uncover a non-unitary fixed point with $H=M_{22}\subset S_{22}$, a sporadic Mathieu group. Along the way, we encounter conformal manifolds at leading order in perturbation theory which we resolve at sub-leading order.

Lifshitz critical points meet Zamolodchikov perturbation theory

Critical points of classical and quantum lattice models are often described by scale-invariant Lifshitz theories which are anisotropic in the continuum limit, as characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z\neq1$. This type of critical behavior can in principle be studied by deforming ordinary $z=1$ conformal field theories (CFTs) by relevant vector operators breaking the rotational/Lorentz symmetry. In this short note, we consider a two-dimensional system of coupled minimal model CFTs $\mathcal{M}_{m,m+1}$ which realizes this perspective in a controlled fashion via Zamolodchikov's large $m$ expansion. The model turns out to exhibit interesting properties, including a manifold of interacting Lifshitz fixed points and emergent rotational symmetry in the infrared.

Demystifying integrable QFTs in AdS: No-go theorems for higher-spin charges

Higher-spin conserved currents and charges feature prominently in integrable 2d QFTs in flat space. Motivated by the question of integrable field theories in AdS space, we consider the consequences of higher-spin currents for QFTs in AdS$_2$, and find that their effect is much more constraining than in flat space. Specifically, it is impossible to preserve: (a) any higher-spin charges when deforming a free field of generic mass by interactions (even boundary-localized), or (b) any spin-4 charges when deforming a CFT by a Virasoro primary. Therefore, in these settings, there are no integrable theories in AdS with higher-spin conserved charges. Along the way, we explain how higher-spin charges lead to integer spacing in the spectrum of primaries, sum rules on the OPE data, and constraints on correlation functions. We also explain a key difference between AdS and flat space: in AdS one cannot `partially' conserve a higher-spin current along particular directions, since the AdS isometries imply full conservation. Finally, we describe the consequences of higher-spin symmetry breaking on the spectrum of long-range models.

Five points for the Polyakov Bootstrap

Higher-point correlation functions encode the data of infinitely many 4-point correlators in conformal field theory (CFT). In this paper, we develop new tools to efficiently extract this data from multi-point crossing equations. Concretely, we generalize the functionals constituting the so-called Polyakov bootstrap of 4-point correlators to the case of 5-point functions in one-dimensional CFTs. We first construct the crossing symmetric Polyakov blocks, and then derive sum-rules by requiring consistency with the operator product expansion (OPE). This procedure leads to two classes of functionals controlling OPE coefficients of double- and triple-twist families. After extensively checking the validity of the associated sum-rules, we apply our functionals to the truncated 5-point bootstrap where we find several advantages with respect to more standard derivative functionals.

Coupled minimal models revisited II: Constraints from permutation symmetry

Coupling $N$ large $m$ minimal models and flowing to IR fixed points is a systematic way to build new classes of compact unitary 2d CFTs which are likely to be irrational, and potentially have a positive Virasoro twist gap above the vaccuum. In this paper, we build on the construction of [1], establishing that, for spins less than 10, additional currents transforming in non-trivial irreducible representations of the permutation symmetry $S_N$ are not conserved at the IR fixed points. Along the way, we develop a finer understanding of the spectrum of these theories, of the special properties of the $N=4$ case and of non-invertible symmetries that constrain them. We also discuss variations of the original setup of [1] some of which can exist for smaller values of the UV central charge.

Lining up a Positive Semi-Definite Six-Point Bootstrap

In this work we initiate a positive semi-definite numerical bootstrap program for multi-point correlators. Considering six-point functions of operators on a line we reformulate the crossing symmetry equation for a pair of comb-channel expansions as a semi-definite programming problem. We provide two alternative formulations of this problem. At least one of them turns out to be amenable to numerical implementation. Through a combination of analytical and numerical techniques we obtain rigorous bounds on CFT data in the triple-twist channel for several examples.

A bootstrap study of minimal model deformations

For QFTs in AdS the boundary correlation functions remain conformal even if the bulk theory has a scale. This allows one to constrain RG flows with numerical conformal bootstrap methods. We apply this idea to flows between two-dimensional CFTs, focusing on deformations of the tricritical and ordinary Ising model. We provide non-perturbative constraints for the boundary correlation functions of these flows and compare them with conformal perturbation theory in the vicinity of the fixed points. We also reproduce a completely general constraint on the sign of the $T\bar T$ deformation in two dimensions.

Exploring Inelasticity in the S-Matrix Bootstrap

The modern S-Matrix Bootstrap provides non-perturbative bounds on low-energy aspects of scattering amplitudes, leveraging the constraints of unitarity, analyticity and crossing. Typically, the solutions saturating such bounds also saturate the unitarity constraint as much as possible, meaning that they are almost exclusively elastic. This is expected to be unphysical in $d>2$ because of Aks' theorem. We explore this issue by adding inelasticity as an additional input, both using a primal approach in general dimensions which extends the usual ansatz, and establishing a dual formulation in the 2d case. We then measure the effects on the low-energy observables where we observe stronger bounds than in the standard setup.

Coupled minimal models revisited

We study coupled unitary Virasoro minimal models in the large rank ($m \rightarrow \infty$) limit. In large $m$ perturbation theory, we find two non-trivial IR fixed points which exhibit irrational coefficients in several anomalous dimensions and the central charge. For $N>4$ copies, we show that the IR theory breaks all possible currents that would otherwise enhance the Virasoro algebra, up to spin 10. This provides strong evidence that the IR fixed points are examples of compact, unitary, irrational CFTs with the minimal amount of chiral symmetry. We also analyze anomalous dimension matrices for a family of degenerate operators with increasing spin. These display further evidence of irrationality and begin to reveal the form of the leading quantum Regge trajectory.

Lightcone Bootstrap at higher points

Higher-point functions of scalar operators are a rich observable in CFTs, as they contain OPE data involving multiple spinning operators. We derive the lightcone blocks for five- and six-point functions in the snowflake channel and use them to bootstrap these correlators in the lightcone limit. As a result we determine the large spin expansion of OPE coefficients involving two or three spinning operators. We verify our results by comparing to the block decomposition of higher-point functions in generalized free theory and in theories with a cubic coupling.

Towards Bootstrapping RG flows: Sine-Gordon in AdS

The boundary correlation functions for a Quantum Field Theory (QFT) in an Anti-de Sitter (AdS) background can stay conformally covariant even if the bulk theory undergoes a renormalization group (RG) flow. Studying such correlation functions with the numerical conformal bootstrap leads to non-perturbative constraints that must hold along the entire flow. In this paper we carry out this analysis for the sine-Gordon RG flows in AdS$_2$, which start with a free (compact) scalar in the UV and end with well-known massive integrable theories that saturate many S-matrix bootstrap bounds. We numerically analyze the correlation functions of both breathers and kinks and provide a detailed comparison with perturbation theory near the UV fixed point. Our bounds are often saturated to one or two orders in perturbation theory, as well as in the flat-space limit, but not necessarily in between.

Conformal Bootstrap near the edge

We propose a bootstrap program for CFTs near intersecting boundaries which form a co-dimension 2 edge. We describe the kinematical setup and show that bulk 1-pt functions and bulk-edge 2-pt functions depend on a non-trivial cross-ratio and on the angle between the boundaries. Using the boundary OPE (BOE) with respect to each boundary, we derive two independent conformal block expansions for these correlators. The matching of the two BOE expansions leads to a crossing equation. We analytically solve this equation in several simple cases, notably for a free bulk field, where we recover Feynman-diagrammatic results by Cardy.

The perturbative CFT optical theorem and high-energy string scattering in AdS at one loop

We derive an optical theorem for perturbative CFTs which computes the double discontinuity of conformal correlators from the single discontinuities of lower order correlators, in analogy with the optical theorem for flat space scattering amplitudes. The theorem takes a purely multiplicative form in the CFT impact parameter representation used to describe high-energy scattering in the dual AdS theory. We use this result to study four-point correlation functions that are dominated in the Regge limit by the exchange of the graviton Regge trajectory (Pomeron) in the dual theory. At one-loop the scattering is dominated by double Pomeron exchange and receives contributions from tidal excitations of the scattering states which are efficiently described by an AdS vertex function, in close analogy with the known Regge limit result for one-loop string scattering in flat space at finite string tension. We compare the flat space limit of the conformal correlator to the flat space results and thus derive constraints on the one-loop vertex function for type IIB strings in AdS and also on general spinning tree level type IIB amplitudes in AdS.

Numerical Methods in the Conformal Bootstrap

We present a low entry-level introduction to the Conformal Bootstrap. We review and obtain several basic bounds using Linear Programming in machine precision in Mathematica, making the results accessible even to the most uneducated computer user. The Extremal Functional Method and the method of determinants are also explored. Finally, we make an attempt at writing modular invariance statements as crossing symmetry equations for twist operators and perform Modular Bootstrap using 4-pt correlators.
