Acoustic-based Guidance for Automatic Docking of Holonomic AUVs

This paper describes a system to automatically dock an AUV onto a docking station without precise knowledge of the position and orientation of the latter, in the presence of unknown ocean currents, using a fully acoustic sensing architecture. The system relies on a pair of Ultrashort Baseline sensors, one onboard the vehicle and one installed on a seabed-resident docking station, enabling operation in low-visibility environments where cameras are ineffective. Relative orientation is estimated by a nonlinear complementary filter on $SO(3)$, while an Extended Kalman Filter provides relative position, supplying pose estimates to a geometric controller on $SE(3)$ that executes the docking manoeuvre. The complete system is implemented in a dedicated software suite and validated in simulation and water trials.

Pegasus Simulator: An Isaac Sim Framework for Multiple Aerial Vehicles Simulation

Developing and testing novel control and motion planning algorithms for aerial vehicles can be a challenging task, with the robotics community relying more than ever on 3D simulation technologies to evaluate the performance of new algorithms in a variety of conditions and environments. In this work, we introduce the Pegasus Simulator, a modular framework implemented as an NVIDIA Isaac Sim extension that enables real-time simulation of multiple multirotor vehicles in photo-realistic environments, while providing out-of-the-box integration with the widely adopted PX4-Autopilot and ROS2 through its modular implementation and intuitive graphical user interface. To demonstrate some of its capabilities, a nonlinear controller was implemented and simulation results for two drones performing aggressive flight maneuvers are presented. Code and documentation for this framework are also provided as supplementary material.

DIeSEL: DIstributed SElf-Localization of a network of underwater vehicles

How can teams of artificial agents localize and position themselves in GPS-denied environments? How can each agent determine its position from pairwise ranges, own velocity, and limited interaction with neighbors? This paper addresses this problem from an optimization point of view: we directly optimize the nonconvex maximum-likelihood estimator in the presence of range measurements contaminated with Gaussian noise, and we obtain a provably convergent, accurate and distributed positioning algorithm that outperforms the extended Kalman filter, a standard centralized solution for this problem.
