The Recovery of Semilinear Potentials Satisfying Null Conditions From Scattering Data

We construct oscillatory solutions of fully semilinear wave equations in Minkowski space satisfying a null condition of the form $$\square u:=(-\partial_{x_0}^2 +\sum_{j=1}^n \partial_{x_j}^2 )u= q(x,u)((\partial_{x_0}u)^2-|\nabla_{x'}u|^2),$$ $$x=(x_0,x'), \;\ x'=(x_1,\ldots, x_n) \text{ and } x_0=t \text{ is the time variable,}$$ on an interval $x_0\in [-T,T]$, $T<\infty$ arbitrary, which consist of the superposition of a non-oscillatory background solution and a single phase train of highly oscillatory waves of wave length $h\ll1$ and amplitudes given by powers of $h$; the waves interact with the nonlinearity and we measure the response $u(x_0,x')|_{x_0=T'}$ at a fixed time $x_0=T'<T$. We show that the coefficient of amplitude $h$ of the oscillatory part of the nonlinear geometric optics expansion of the solution determines the light-ray transform of a vector field associated with $q(x,u)$, which determines $q(x,u)$ uniquely in the maximal region determined by the data. Our methods also work for systems of semilinear wave equations satisfying null conditions, but in this paper we focus on the scalar case.

The High Energy Distribution of Scattering Phase Shifts of Schrödinger operators in Hyperbolic Space

We prove a trace formula for the high energy limit of the scattering phase shifts of Schrödinger operators with short range real valued potentials in hyperbolic space; it relates the scattering shifts and the geodesic X-ray transform of the potential. This extends a result of Bulger and Pushnitski for Schrödinger operators in Euclidean space. As an application, we prove that the high energy limit of the phase shifts uniquely determines radial potentials which are monotone and decay super-exponentially. This extends a result of Levinson for potential perturbations of the Euclidean Laplacian to this special class of potentials in hyperbolic space.

The distribution of negative eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

We study the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of negative eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with real valued potentials on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We establish conditions on the potential that determine if there are finitely or infinitely many negative eigenvalues. In the latter case, they may only accumulate at zero and we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of eigenvalues in an interval $(-\infty,-E)$ as $E\rightarrow 0$.

Inverse Nonlinear Scattering by a Metric

We study the inverse problem of determining a time-dependent globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric from the scattering operator for semilinear wave equations.

Recovery of a cubic non-linearity in the wave equation in the weakly non-linear regime

We study the inverse problem of recovery a compactly supported non-linearity in the semilinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+ α(x) |u|^2u=0$, in two and three dimensions. We probe the medium with complex-valued harmonic waves of wavelength $h$ and amplitude $h^{-1/2}$, then they propagate in the weakly non-linear regime; and measure the transmitted wave when it exits the support of $α$. We show that one can extract the Radon transform of $α$ from the phase shift of such waves, and then one can recover $α$. We also show that one can probe the medium with real-valued harmonic waves and obtain uniqueness for the linearized problem.

Recovery of a general nonlinearity in the semilinear wave equation

We study the inverse problem of recovery a non-linearity $f(x,u)$, which is compactly supported in $x$, in the semilinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+ f(x,u)=0$. We probe the medium with either complex or real-valued harmonic waves of wavelength $\sim h$ and amplitude $\sim 1$. They propagate in a regime where the non-linearity affects the subprincipal but not the principal term, except for the zeroth harmonics. We measure the transmitted wave when it exits $\text{supp}_x f$. We show that one can recover $f(x,u)$ when it is an odd function of $u$, and we can recover $α(x)$ when $f(x,u)=α(x)u^{2m}$. This is done in an explicit way as $h\to0$.

Singularities generated by the triple interaction of semilinear conormal waves

We study the local propagation of conormal singularities for solutions of semilinear wave equations $\square u = P(y, u)$, where $P(y, u)$ is a polynomial of degree $N \geq 3$ in $u$ with $C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^3_y)$ coefficients. We know from the work of Melrose & Ritter and Bony that if u is conormal to three waves which intersect transversally at point $q$, then after the triple interaction $u(y)$ is a conormal distribution with respect to the three waves and the characteristic cone $Q$ with vertex at $q$. We compute the principal symbol of $u$ at the cone and away from the hypersurfaces. We show that if $\partial_u^3 P (q, u(q)) \neq 0$, $u$ is an ellipitic conormal distribution.

The scattering operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

We obtain a formula for the Schwartz kernel of the scattering operator in terms of the Schwartz kernel of the fundamental solution of the wave operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. If there are no trapped geodesics, this formula is used to show that the scattering operator is a Fourier integral operator that quantizes the scattering relation.

Radiation fields for semilinear wave equations

We define the radiation fields of solutions to critical semilinear wave equations in R^3 and use them to define the scattering operator. We also prove a support theorem for the radiation fields with radial initial data. This extends the well known support theorem for the Radon transform to this setting and can also be interpreted as a Paley-Wiener theorem for the distorted nonlinear Fourier transform of radial functions.

Recovering asymptotics of metrics from fixed energy scattering data

The problem of recovering the asymptotics of a short range perturbation of the Euclidean metric on R^n from fixed energy scattering data is studied. It is shown that if two such metrics, g1, g2, have scattering data at some fixed energy which are equal up to smoothing, then there exists a diffeomorphism ψ`fixing infinity' such that ψ^*(g1) - g2 is rapidly decreasing. Given the scattering matrix at two energies, it is shown that the asymptotics of a metric and a short range potential can be determined simultaneously. These results also hold for a wide class of scattering manifolds.
