Twisted Blanchfield pairings and twisted signatures III: Applications

This paper describes how to compute algorithmically certain twisted signature invariants of a knot $K$ using twisted Blanchfield forms. An illustration of the algorithm is implemented on $(2,q)$-torus knots. Additionally, using satellite formulas for these invariants, we also show how to obstruct the sliceness of certain iterated torus knots.

Infinite homotopy stable class for 4-manifolds with boundary

We show that for every odd prime $q$, there exists an infinite family $\{M_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ of topological 4-manifolds that are all stably homeomorphic to one another, all the manifolds $M_i$ have isometric rank one equivariant intersection pairings and boundary $L(2q, 1) # (S^1 \times S^2)$, but they are pairwise not homotopy equivalent via any homotopy equivalence that restricts to a homotopy equivalence of the boundary.

Characterisation of homotopy ribbon discs

Let $Γ$ be either the infinite cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}$ or the Baumslag-Solitar group $\mathbb{Z} \ltimes \mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{2}]$. Let $K$ be a slice knot admitting a slice disc $D$ in the 4-ball whose exterior has fundamental group $Γ$. We classify the $Γ$-homotopy ribbon slice discs for $K$ up to topological ambient isotopy rel. boundary. In the infinite cyclic case, there is a unique equivalence class of such slice discs. When $Γ$ is the Baumslag-Solitar group, there are at most two equivalence classes of $Γ$-homotopy ribbon discs, and at most one such slice disc for each lagrangian of the Blanchfield pairing of $K$.

Homotopy ribbon discs with a fixed group

In the topological category, the classification of homotopy ribbon discs is known when the fundamental group $G$ of the exterior is $\mathbb{Z}$ and the Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,2)$. We prove that if a group $G$ is geometrically $2$-dimensional and satisfies the Farrell-Jones conjecture, then a condition involving the fundamental group ensures that exteriors of aspherical homotopy ribbon discs with fundamental group $G$ are s-cobordant rel.\ boundary. When $G$ is good, this leads to the classification of such discs. As an application, for any knot $J \subset S^3$ whose knot group $G(J)$ is good, we classify the homotopy ribbon discs for $J \# -J$ whose complement has group $G(J)$. A similar application is obtained for $BS(m,n)$ when $|m-n|=1$.

Invariants of $2$-knots

This short survey, which was written to accompany a minicourse at the BIRS conference "Topology in dimension 4.5", concerns invariants of knotted $2$-spheres in $S^4$, also known as $2$-knots. It covers invariants extracted from the algebraic topology of the knot exterior, including Alexander invariants, the Farber-Levine pairing and Casson-Gordon invariants, as well as gauge theoretic and combinatorial invariants. Details are scarce and new results inexistant.

Twisted Blanchfield pairings and twisted signatures I: Algebraic background

This is the first paper in a series of three devoted to studying twisted linking forms of knots and three-manifolds. Its function is to provide the algebraic foundations for the next two papers by describing how to define and calculate signature invariants associated to a linking form $M\times M\to\mathbb{F}(t)/\mathbb{F}[t^{\pm1}]$ for $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C}$, where $M$ is a torsion $\mathbb{F}[t^{\pm 1}]$-module. Along the way, we classify such linking forms up to isometry and Witt equivalence and study whether they can be represented by matrices.

Twisted Blanchfield pairings and twisted signatures II: Relation to Casson-Gordon invariants

This paper studies twisted signature invariants and twisted linking forms, with a view towards obstructions to knot concordance. Given a knot $K$ and a representation $ρ$ of the knot group, we define a twisted signature function $σ_{K,ρ} \colon S^1 \to \mathbb{Z}$. This invariant satisfies many of the same algebraic properties as the classical Levine-Tristram signature $σ_K$. When the representation is abelian, $σ_{K,ρ}$ recovers $σ_K$, while for appropriate metabelian representations, $σ_{K,ρ}$ is closely related to the Casson-Gordon invariants. Additionally, we prove satellite formulas for $σ_{K,ρ}$ and for twisted Blanchfield forms.

Simply-connected manifolds with large homotopy stable classes

For every $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq 2$ we construct $n$ pairwise homotopically inequivalent simply-connected, closed $4k$-dimensional manifolds, all of which are stably diffeomorphic to one another. Each of these manifolds has hyperbolic intersection form and is stably parallelisable. In dimension $4$, we exhibit an analogous phenomenon for spin$^{c}$ structures on $S^2 \times S^2$. For $m\geq 1$, we also provide similar $(4m{-}1)$-connected $8m$-dimensional examples, where the number of homotopy types in a stable diffeomorphism class is related to the order of the image of the stable $J$-homomorphism $π_{4m-1}(SO) \to π^s_{4m-1}$.

Abelian invariants of doubly slice links

We provide obstructions to a link in $S^3$ arising as the cross section of any number of unlinked spheres in $S^4$. Our obstructions arise from the multivariable signature, the Blanchfield form and generalised Seifert matrices. We also obtain obstructions in the case of surfaces of higher genera, leading to a lower bound on the doubly slice genus of links.

An explicit computation of the Blanchfield pairing for arbitrary links

Given a link $L$, the Blanchfield pairing $\operatorname{Bl}(L)$ is a pairing which is defined on the torsion submodule of the Alexander module of $L$. In some particular cases, namely if $L$ is a boundary link or if the Alexander module of $L$ is torsion, $\operatorname{Bl}(L)$ can be computed explicitly; however no formula is known in general. In this article, we compute the Blanchfield pairing of any link, generalizing the aforementioned results. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof that the Blanchfield pairing is hermitian. Finally, we also obtain short proofs of several properties of $\operatorname{Bl}(L)$.

Non-slice linear combinations of iterated torus knots

In 1976, Rudolph asked whether algebraic knots are linearly independent in the knot concordance group. This paper uses twisted Blanchfield pairings to answer this question in the affirmative for new large families of algebraic knots.

Twisted signatures of fibered knots

This paper concerns twisted signature invariants of knots and 3-manifolds. In the fibered case, we reduce the computation of these invariants to the study of the intersection form and monodromy on the twisted homology of the fiber surface. Along the way, we use rings of power series to obtain new interpretations of the twisted Milnor pairing introduced by Kirk and Livingston. This allows us to relate these pairings to twisted Blanchfield pairings. Finally, we study the resulting signature invariants, all of which are twisted generalisations of the Levine-Tristram signature.

A note on the weak splitting number

The weak splitting number $wsp(L)$ of a link $L$ is the minimal number of crossing changes needed to turn $L$ into a split union of knots. We describe conditions under which certain $\mathbb{R}$-valued link invariants give lower bounds on $wsp(L)$. This result is used both to obtain new bounds on $wsp(L)$ in terms of the multivariable signature and to recover known lower bounds in terms of the $τ$ and $s$-invariants. We also establish new obstructions using link Floer homology and apply all these methods to compute $wsp$ for all but two of the $130$ prime links with $9$ or fewer crossings.

Stably slice disks of links

We define the stabilizing number $\operatorname{sn}(K)$ of a knot $K \subset S^3$ as the minimal number $n$ of $S^2 \times S^2$ connected summands required for $K$ to bound a nullhomotopic locally flat disc in $D^4 \# n S^2 \times S^2$. This quantity is defined when the Arf invariant of $K$ is zero. We show that $\operatorname{sn}(K)$ is bounded below by signatures and Casson-Gordon invariants and bounded above by the topological $4$-genus $g_4^{\operatorname{top}}(K)$. We provide an infinite family of examples with $\operatorname{sn}(K)<g_4^{\operatorname{top}}(K)$.

A multivariable Casson-Lin type invariant

We introduce a multivariable Casson-Lin type invariant for links in $S^3$. This invariant is defined as a signed count of irreducible $\operatorname{SU}(2)$ representations of the link group with fixed meridional traces. For 2-component links with linking number one, the invariant is shown to be a sum of multivariable signatures. We also obtain some results concerning deformations of $\operatorname{SU}(2)$ representations of link groups.

The Blanchfield pairing of colored links

It is well known that the Blanchfield pairing of a knot can be expressed using Seifert matrices. In this paper, we compute the Blanchfield pairing of a colored link with non-zero Alexander polynomial. More precisely, we show that the Blanchfield pairing of such a link can be written in terms of generalized Seifert matrices which arise from the use of C-complexes.

Conway's potential function via the Gassner representation

We show how Conway's multivariable potential function can be constructed using braids and the reduced Gassner representation. The resulting formula is a multivariable generalization of a construction, due to Kassel-Turaev, of the Alexander-Conway polynomial in terms of the Burau representation. Apart from providing an efficient method of computing the potential function, our result also removes the sign ambiguity in the current formulas which relate the multivariable Alexander polynomial to the reduced Gassner representation. We also relate the distinct definitions of this representation which have appeared in the literature.

The Levine-Tristram signature: a survey

The Levine-Tristram signature associates to each oriented link $L$ in $S^3$ a function $σ_L \colon S^1 \to \mathbb{Z}.$ This invariant can be defined in a variety of ways, and its numerous applications include the study of unlinking numbers and link concordance. In this survey, we recall the three and four dimensional definitions of $σ_L$, list its main properties and applications, and give comprehensive references for the proofs of these statements.
