Exploring Fine-tuning of the Next-to-Minimal Composite Higgs Model

We perform a detailed study of the fine-tuning of the two-site, 4D, Next-to-Minimal Composite Higgs Model (NMCHM), based on the global symmetry breaking pattern $SO(6)\rightarrow SO(5)$. Using our previously-defined fine-tuning measure that correctly combines the effect of multiple sources of fine-tuning, we quantify the fine-tuning that is expected to result from future collider measurements of the Standard Model-like Higgs branching ratios, in addition to null searches for the new resonances in the model. We also perform a detailed comparison with the Minimal Composite Higgs Model, finding that there is in general little difference between the fine-tuning expected in the two scenarios, even after measurements at a high-luminosity, 1 TeV linear collider. Finally, we briefly consider the relationship between fine-tuning and the ability of the extra scalar in the NMCHM model to act as a dark matter candidate, finding that the realisation of a $Z_2$ symmetry that stabilises the scalar is amongst the most natural regions in the parameter space, regardless of future collider measurements.

Gravitational waves and electroweak baryogenesis in a global study of the extended scalar singlet model

We perform a global fit of the extended scalar singlet model with a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate. Using the most up-to-date results from the $\mathit{Planck}$ measured DM relic density, direct detection limits from the XENON1T (2018) experiment, electroweak precision observables and Higgs searches at colliders, we constrain the 7-dimensional model parameter space. We also find regions in the model parameter space where a successful electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) can be viable. This allows us to compute the gravitational wave (GW) signals arising from the phase transition, and discuss the potential discovery prospects of the model at current and future GW experiments. Our global fit places a strong upper $\mathit{and}$ lower limit on the second scalar mass, the fermion DM mass and the scalar-fermion DM coupling. In agreement with previous studies, we find that our model can simultaneously yield a strong first-order phase transition and saturate the observed DM abundance. More importantly, the GW spectra of viable points can often be within reach of future GW experiments such as LISA, DECIGO and BBO.

On the direct detection of multi-component dark matter: implications of the relic abundance

Recently we studied the direct detection of multi-component dark matter with arbitrary local energy densities. Although the generation of the dark matter relic abundance is model-dependent, and in principle could be only indirectly related to direct detection, it is interesting to consider the implications of the former on the latter. In this work we conduct an extended analysis to include constraints from two natural scenarios of dark matter genesis: asymmetric dark matter and thermal freeze-out. In the first (second) case, the dark matter number (energy) densities of the different components are expected to be similar. In the case of thermal freeze-out, we assume that the global energy density scales with the local one. In our numerical analysis we analyse the median sensitivity of direct detection experiments to discriminate a two-component scenario from a one-component one, and also the precision with which dark matter parameters can be extracted. We analyse these generic scenarios for both light and heavy mediators. We find that most scenarios have a relatively suppressed maximum median sensitivity compared to the previously studied general cases. We also find that the asymmetric scenario is more promising than the thermal freeze-out one.

Time-dependent rate of multicomponent dark matter: Reproducing the DAMA/LIBRA phase-2 results

The current paradigm for dark matter direct detection is to assume that the dark sector is solely composed of a single particle species. In this short paper, we make the observation that dark matter comprising both a light and a heavy component that modulate out of phase leads to interesting phenomenology in annual modulation experiments. For an illustrative example, we use the recently released DAMA/LIBRA phase-2 results with a lower energy threshold. Immediately after, it was argued that a one-component spin-independent dark matter explanation of the observed annual modulation is strongly disfavored or excluded unless isospin-violating couplings are invoked. We show that a simple two-component extension can reproduce the observed spectrum without the need to invoke fine-tuned couplings. Using the publicly available DAMA/LIBRA data, we perform a fit of the DAMA/LIBRA energy spectrum of the annual modulation amplitude to a scenario with two dark matter components. We also take into account how gravitational focusing affects the phases of the light and a heavy components differently, which leads to nontrivial effects in the total time-dependent rate. Our results show that there exists a unique solution in agreement with the data in the simplest case of isospin-conserving couplings with equal cross sections. The distinctive features found in this work are crucial for a dark matter interpretation of any observed annual modulation.

A global study of the extended scalar singlet model

We present preliminary results from a global study of the extended scalar singlet model with a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate. In addition to requiring a successful electroweak baryogenesis, we combine constraints from the DM relic density, direct detection limits from PandaX-II experiment, electroweak precision observables and Higgs searches at colliders. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the model can simultaneously explain (at least a part of) the observed DM abundance and matter-antimatter asymmetry. The viable points often lead to strong gravitational wave (GW) signals that can potentially be probed at future GW experiments.

The Effect of a Light Sterile Neutrino at NO$ν$A and DUNE

Now that the NOvA experiment is approaching two years run time and has released some preliminary data, some constraints for the oscillation parameters can be inferred. Currently the best fits for NOvA are three separate results, the reason they are indistinct is that they produce almost degenerate probability curves. It has been postulated that these degeneracies can be resolved by running antineutrinos at NOvA and/or combining its data with T2K. However, this degeneracy resolution power can be compromised if sterile neutrinos are present due to additional degrees of freedom that can significantly alter the oscillation probability for any of the current best fits. We aim to investigate this degradation in predictive power and the effect of the DUNE experiment on it. Parameter degeneracy and hierarchy sensitivity of NO$ν$A in presence of sterile neutrino

The first hint of neutrino mass hierarchy is expected to come from the NO$ν$A experiment in Fermilab as the present best-fit parameter space i.e., normal hierarchy and $δ_{CP}=-90^\circ$ is the favourable parameter space for NO$ν$A where there is no degeneracy. But this situation may change if the standard three flavour framework is not complete and there is existence of new physics. In this work we consider the presence of an extra light sterile neutrino at the eV scale and study the new degeneracies which are absent in the standard three flavour framework. We also study the effect of these new degeneracies on the hierarchy measurement of NO$ν$A.

On the direct detection of multi-component dark matter: sensitivity studies and parameter estimation

We study the case of multi-component dark matter, in particular how direct detection signals are modified in the presence of several stable weakly-interacting-massive particles. Assuming a positive signal in a future direct detection experiment, stemming from two dark matter components, we study the region in parameter space where it is possible to distinguish a one from a two-component dark matter spectrum. First, we leave as free parameters the two dark matter masses and show that the two hypotheses can be significantly discriminated for a range of dark matter masses with their splitting being the critical factor. We then investigate how including the effects of different interaction strengths, local densities or velocity dispersions for the two components modifies these conclusions. We also consider the case of isospin-violating couplings. In all scenarios, we show results for various types of nuclei both for elastic spin-independent and spin-dependent interactions. Finally, assuming that the two-component hypothesis is confirmed, we quantify the accuracy with which the parameters can be extracted and discuss the different degeneracies that occur. This includes studying the case in which only a single experiment observes a signal, and also the scenario of having two signals from two different experiments, in which case the ratios of the couplings to neutrons and protons may also be extracted.

Triple top signal as a probe of charged Higgs in a 2HDM

Within the framework of the type-II Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM-II) we study the production of three top quarks at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the Standard Model the production cross section of three tops is low ($\approx 3$fb), while it is expected to be significant in the 2HDM-II for reasonable choices of the parameters. We study the production of a charged Higgs in association with a top quark, followed by the decays $H^{\pm} \to W^{\pm}A$ and $A \to t\bar{t}$. We undertake a full detector simulation of the signal, and use simple conservative cuts, focusing on the final states that contain three or more leptons, and exactly one same sign di-lepton pair. Finally, we present the exclusion bounds dependent on charged Higgs and pseudoscalar Higgs masses expected in the near future at the 14TeV LHC.

Gravitational wave, collider and dark matter signals from a scalar singlet electroweak baryogenesis

We analyse a simple extension of the SM with just an additional scalar singlet coupled to the Higgs boson. We discuss the possible probes for electroweak baryogenesis in this model including collider searches, gravitational wave and direct dark matter detection signals. We show that a large portion of the model parameter space exists where the observation of gravitational waves would allow detection while the indirect collider searches would not.

Study of parameter degeneracy and hierarchy sensitivity of NO$ν$A in presence of sterile neutrino

The first hint of the neutrino mass hierarchy is believed to come from the long-baseline experiment NO$ν$A. Recent results from the NO$ν$A shows a mild preference towards the CP phase $δ_{13} = -90^\circ$ and normal hierarchy. Fortunately this is the favorable area of the parameter space which does not suffer from the hierarchy-$δ_{13}$ degeneracy and thus NO$ν$A can have good hierarchy sensitivity for this true combination of hierarchy and $δ_{13}$. Apart from the hierarchy-$δ_{13}$ degeneracy there is also the octant-$δ_{13}$ degeneracy. But this does not affect the favorable parameter space of NO$ν$A as this degeneracy can be resolved with a balanced neutrino and antineutrino run. However, ff we consider the existence of a light sterile neutrino then there may be additional degeneracies which can spoil the hierarchy sensitivity of NO$ν$A even in the favorable parameter space. In the present work we find that apart from the degeneracies mentioned above, there are additional hierarchy and octant degeneracies that appear with the new phase $δ_{14}$ in the presence of a light sterile neutrino in the eV scale. In contrast to the hierarchy and octant degeneracies appearing with $δ_{13}$, the parameter space for hierarchy-$δ_{14}$ degeneracy is different in neutrinos and antineutrinos though the octant-$δ_{14}$ degeneracy behaves similarly in neutrinos and antineutrinos. We study the effect of these degeneracies on the hierarchy sensitivity of NO$ν$A for the true normal hierarchy.

Constraining fine tuning in Composite Higgs Models with partially composite leptons

Minimal Composite Higgs Models (MCHM) have long provided a solution to the hierarchy problem of the Standard Model, yet suffer from various sources of fine tuning that are becoming increasingly problematic with the lack of new physics observations at the LHC. We develop a new fine tuning measure that accurately counts each contribution to fine tuning (single, double, triple, etc) that can occur in a theory with $n_p$ parameters, that must reproduce $n_o$ observables. We then use a novel scanning procedure to perform a comprehensive study of three different two-site, 4D, $SO(5)\rightarrow SO(4)$ MCHMs with all third generation fermions included, distinguished by the choice of the lepton embeddings. These are the MCHM$^{\textbf{5-5-5}}_{\textbf{5-5-5}}$, MCHM$^{\textbf{5-5-5}}_{\textbf{14-14-10}}$ and MCHM$^{\textbf{5-5-5}}_{\textbf{14-1-10}}$, where MCHM$^{q-t-b}_{l-τ-ν}$ has the lepton doublet partner in representation $l$, tau partner in representation $τ$, and so on. We find that embedding at least one massive lepton in the symmetric $\textbf{14}$ of $SO(5)$ reduces the tuning for the case of low top partner masses (in line with previous results), but that this is balanced against the increased complexity of the model when one properly accounts for all sources of fine tuning. We study both the current relative fine-tuning of each scenario, and the future prospects. Noting that the different scenarios behave differently with respect to future improvements in collider measurements, we find that the MCHM$^{\textbf{5-5-5}}_{\textbf{14-1-10}}$ enjoys a relatively low increase in fine tuning even for a future lower bound on the top partner masses of 3.4 TeV (or equivalently a maximum Higgs-fermion or Higgs-gluon coupling deviation of 2%).

Triple-gluon and quark-gluon vertex from lattice QCD in Landau gauge

We report on preliminary results for the triple-gluon and the quark-gluon vertex in Landau gauge. Our results are based on two-flavor and quenched lattice QCD calculations for different quark masses, lattice spacings and volumes. We discuss the momentum dependence of some of the vertices's form factors and the deviations from the tree-level form.

Boosting the charged Higgs search prospects using jet substructure at the LHC

Charged Higgs bosons are predicted in variety of theoretically well-motivated new physics models with extended Higgs sectors. In this study, we focus on a type-II two Higgs doublet model (2HDM-II) and consider a heavy charged Higgs with its mass ranging from 500 GeV to 1 TeV as dictated by the $b\to sγ$ constraints which render $M_{H^\pm}>480$ GeV. We study the dominant production mode $H^\pm t$ associated production with $H^\pm \to W^\pm A$ being the dominant decay channel when the pseudoscalar $A$ is considerably lighter. For such a heavy charged Higgs, both the decay products $W^\pm$ and $A$ are relatively boosted. In such a scenario, we apply the jet substructure analysis of tagging the fat pseudoscalar and $W$ jets in order to eliminate the standard model background efficiently. We perform a detailed detector simulation for the signal and background processes at the 14 TeV LHC. We introduce various kinematical cuts to determine the signal significance for a number of benchmark points with charged Higgs boson mass from 500 GeV to 1 TeV in the $W^\pm A$ decay channel. Finally we perform a multivariate analysis utilizing a boosted decision tree algorithm to optimize these significances.

Exploring a heavy charged Higgs using jet substructure in a fully hadronic channel

In the framework of the type-II Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM-II) a charged Higgs search strategy is presented for the dominant production mode $gb \rightarrow tH^\pm$ at the 14 TeV LHC. We consider the decay process which includes $t \rightarrow bW^\pm$ and $H^\pm \rightarrow AW^\pm$, and a fully hadronic final state consisting of $bb\bar{b}+\mbox{jets}+X$. Dictated by the $b \rightarrow sγ$ constraints which render $M_{H^\pm} > 480$ GeV we study two scenarios in which the charged Higgs mass is 750 GeV and the pseudoscalar Higgs mass is 200 GeV and 500 GeV. In this mass scheme highly boosted final state objects are expected and handled with jet substructure techniques which also acts to suppress the standard model background. A detailed detector analysis is performed, followed by a multivariate analysis involving many kinematic variables to optimize signal to background significance. Finally the LHC search sensitivities for the two scenarios are presented for various integrated luminosities.

Combined analysis of effective Higgs portal dark matter models

We combine and extend the analyses of effective scalar, vector, Majorana and Dirac fermion Higgs portal models of dark matter (DM), in which DM couples to the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson via an operator of the form $\mathcal{O}_{\textrm{DM}}\, H^\dagger H$. For the fermion models, we take an admixture of scalar $\overlineψ ψ$ and pseudoscalar $\overlineψ iγ_5 ψ$ interaction terms. For each model, we apply constraints on the parameter space based on the Planck measured DM relic density and the LHC limits on the Higgs invisible branching ratio. For the first time, we perform a consistent study of the indirect detection prospects for these models based on the WMAP7/Planck observations of the cosmic microwave background, a combined analysis of 15 dwarf spheroidal galaxies by Fermi-LAT and the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). We also perform a correct treatment of the momentum-dependent direct search cross section that arises from the pseudoscalar interaction term in the fermionic DM theories. We find, in line with previous studies, that current and future direct search experiments such as LUX and XENON1T can exclude much of the parameter space, and we demonstrate that a joint observation in both indirect and direct searches is possible for high mass weakly interacting massive particles. In the case of a pure pseudoscalar interaction of a fermionic DM candidate, future gamma-ray searches are the only class of experiment capable of probing the high mass range of the theory.

Investigating light NMSSM pseudoscalar states with boosted ditau tagging

We study a class of realizations of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model that is motivated by dark matter and Higgs data, and in which the lightest pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass is smaller than twice the bottom quark mass and greater than twice the tau lepton mass. In such scenarios, the lightest pseudoscalar Higgs boson can be copiously produced at the LHC from the decay of heavier superpartners and will dominantly further decay into a pair of tau leptons that is generally boosted. We make use of a boosted object tagging technique designed to tag such a ditau jet, and estimate the sensitivity of the LHC to the considered supersymmetric scenarios with 20 to 50~fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13~TeV.
