Calibration of Smearing and Cooling Algorithms in SU(3)-Color Gauge Theory

The action and topological charge are used to determine the relative rates of standard cooling and smearing algorithms in pure SU(3)-color gauge theory. We consider representative gauge field configurations on $16^3\times 32$ lattices at $β=5.70$ and $24^3\times 36$ lattices at $β=6.00$. We find the relative rate of variation in the action and topological charge under various algorithms may be succinctly described in terms of simple formulae. The results are in accord with recent suggestions from fat-link perturbation theory.

On conditions for the nonperturbative equivalence of ultraviolet cut-off and dimensional regularization schemes

We consider procedures through which an ultraviolet cut-off regularization scheme can be modified to reproduce the same results for nonperturbative renormalized Green's functions as obtained from a dimensional regularization scheme. These issues are considered within the Dyson-Schwinger equation framework, where ultraviolet cut-off regularization can lead to explicit violations of gauge invariance. As a specific illustration, we consider the electron self-energy in quenched QED_4 in both schemes and establish those procedures for which the UV cut-off scheme can be expected to lead to the dimensional regularization results. We also compare results from precise numerical studies using the two types of regularization.

Dimensionally regularized study of nonperturbative quenched QED

We study the dimensionally regularized fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation in quenched nonperturbative QED. We work in arbitrary covariant gauge and perform nonperturbative renormalization numerically. The nonperturbative fermion propagator is solved in D = 4 - 2 * epsilon dimensional Euclidean space for a large number of values of epsilon. Results for D=4 dimensions are then obtained by extrapolation to epsilon = 0. Here we present results using the Curtis-Penningon fermion-photon proper vertex for two values of the coupling, namely alpha=0.6 and alpha=1.5, and compare these to previous studies employing a modified ultraviolet cut-off regularization. The results using the two different regularizations are found to agree to within the numerical precision of the present calculations.

Lattice calculation of the strangeness and electromagnetic nucleon form factors

We report on recent lattice QCD calculations of the strangeness magnetic moment of the nucleon and the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, when we allow the electromagnetic current to connect to quark loops as well as to the valence quarks. Our result for the strangeness magnetic moment is G_M^s(0)=-0.36+/-0.20. The sea contributions from the u and d quarks are about 80% larger. However, they cancel to a large extent due to their electric charges, resulting in a smaller net sea contribution of -0.097+/-0.037 mu_N to the nucleon magnetic moment. As far as the neutron to proton magnetic moment ratio is concerned, this sea contribution tends to cancel out the cloud-quark effect from the Z-graphs and results in a ratio of -0.68+/-0.04 which is close to the SU(6) relation and the experiment. The strangeness Sachs electric mean-square radius _E is found to be small and negative and the total sea contributes substantially to the neutron electric form factor.

Dimensionally Regularized Study of Nonperturbative Quenched QED

We study the dimensionally regularized fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation in quenched nonperturbative QED in an arbitrary covariant gauge using the Curtis-Pennington vertex and perform nonperturbative renormalization numerically. The nonperturbative fermion propagator is solved in D=4-2*epsilon < 4 dimensional Euclidean space for a large number of values of epsilon for two values of the coupling, alpha=0.6 and alpha=1.5. Results for D=4 are then obtained by extrapolation to epsilon=0. We compare these results against previous studies employing a modified ultraviolet cut-off regularization and find agreement to within the numerical precision of the present calculations.

Solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for bound states of scalar theories in Minkowski space

We apply the perturbation theory integral representation (PTIR) to solve for the bound state Bethe-Salpeter (BS) vertex for an arbitrary scattering kernel, without the need for any Wick rotation. The results derived are applicable to any scalar field theory (without derivative coupling). It is shown that solving directly for the BS vertex, rather than the BS amplitude, has several major advantages, notably its relative simplicity and superior numerical accuracy. In order to illustrate the generality of the approach we obtain numerical solutions using this formalism for a number of scattering kernels, including cases where the Wick rotation is not possible.

Subtractive Renormalization of Strong-Coupling Quenched QED in Four Dimensions

We study renormalized quenched strong-coupling QED in four dimensions in arbitrary covariant gauge, in the Dyson-Schwinger equation formalism. Above the chiral critical coupling, we show that there is no finite chiral limit. This behaviour is found to be independent of the detailed choice of proper vertex, provided that the vertex is consistent with the Ward-Takahashi identity and multiplicative renormalizability. The finite solutions previously reported lie in an unphysical regime of the theory with multiple solutions and oscillating mass functions. This study is consistent with the assertion that strong coupling QED$_4$ does not have a continuum limit in the conventional sense.

On Renormalized Strong-Coupling Quenched QED in Four Dimensions

We study renormalized quenched strong-coupling QED in four dimensions in arbitrary covariant gauge. Above the critical coupling leading to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, we show that there is no finite chiral limit. This behaviour is found to be independent of the detailed choice of photon-fermion proper vertex in the Dyson-Schwinger equation formalism, provided that the vertex is consistent with the Ward-Takahashi identity and multiplicative renormalizability. We show that the finite solutions previously reported lie in an unphysical regime of the theory with multiple solutions and ultraviolet oscillations in the mass functions. This study supports the assertion that in four dimensions strong coupling QED does not have a continuum limit in the conventional sense.

Renormalization and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Quenched QED in Arbitrary Covariant Gauge

We extend a previous Landau-gauge study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in strong-coupling, quenched QED_4 to arbitrary covariant gauges. We use the fermion-photon proper vertex proposed by Curtis and Pennington with an additional correction term included to compensate for the small gauge-dependence induced by the ultraviolet regulator. We discuss the chiral limit and the onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of nonperturbative renormalization. We extract the critical coupling in several different gauges and find evidence of a small residual gauge-dependence in this quantity.

SOLVING THE BETHE--SALPETER EQUATION IN MINKOWSKI SPACE: SCALAR THEORIES

The Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation for scalar-scalar bound states in scalar theories without derivative coupling is formulated and solved in Minkowski space. This is achieved using the perturbation theory integral representation (PTIR), which allows these amplitudes to be expressed as integrals over weight functions and known singularity structures and hence allows us to convert the BS equation into an integral equation involving weight functions. We obtain numerical solutions using this formalism for a number of scattering kernels to illustrate the generality of the approach. It applies even when the na\"ıve Wick rotation is invalid. As a check we verify, for example, that this method applied to the special case of the massive ladder exchange kernel reproduces the same results as are obtained by Wick rotation.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Quenched Massive Strong-Coupling QED$_4$

We present results from a study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in massive strong-coupling quenched QED$_4$. Results are compared for three different fermion-photon proper vertex {\it Ansätze\/}: bare $γ^μ$, minimal Ball-Chiu, and Curtis-Pennington. The procedure is straightforward to implement and numerically stable. This is the first study in which this technique is used and it should prove useful in future DSE studies, whenever renormalization is required in numerical work.

Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and confinement with an infrared-vanishing gluon propagator?

We study a model Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator closed using an {\it Ansatz} for the gluon propagator of the form \mbox{$D(q) \sim q^2/[(q^2)^2 + b^4]$} and two {\it Ansätze} for the quark-gluon vertex: the minimal Ball-Chiu and the modified form suggested by Curtis and Pennington. Using the quark condensate as an order parameter, we find that there is a critical value of $b=b_c$ such that the model does not support dynamical chiral symmetry breaking for $b>b_c$. We discuss and apply a confinement test which suggests that, for all values of $b$, the quark propagator in the model {\bf is not} confining. Together these results suggest that this Ansatz for the gluon propagator is inadequate as a model since it does not yield the expected behaviour of QCD.
