TA-RAG: Tone Awareness as a Design Imperative for Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has become a robust architecture for grounding large language models (LLMs) in trusted knowledge. However, standard RAG systems exhibit a structural limitation: retrieved documents carry their own communication styles-professional jargon, formal tone, or academic writings-that shape the behavior of a RAG system before any tone instructions are processed, often causing the system to ignore user requests for a specific tone. We term this phenomenon contextual decoupling, in which a system optimises for factual accuracy while remaining decoupled from the social or operational context of the recipient. Building on prior research in public health peer-support communities, we identify three communicative misalignment-linguistic, cognitive, and relational-that can persist even when retrieval is relevant and the generated response is factually accurate. We conceptualise these as failures of communicative transformation, which remain largely invisible to accuracy-centred RAG evaluation metrics. To address this gap, we propose Tone-Aware RAG (TA-RAG), a conceptual architectural framework that positions communicative alignment alongside factual accuracy as a core design objective. TA-RAG operationalises four constraints-stigma-free language, readability alignment, recipient-sensitive adaptation, and empathetic framing-across the retrieval, context construction, generation, and constraint validation phases in the proposed RAG pipeline. We further highlight an evaluation agenda for jointly assessing factual fidelity and communicative alignment, and identify open challenges. We argue that tone awareness should be treated not as an optional refinement, but as a present design imperative for RAG systems operating in socially sensitive and high-stakes contexts.

DysLexLens: A Low-Resource LLM Framework for Analysing Dyslexic Learners Insights from Online Forums

Dyslexic learners increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support reading, writing, organisation, and study-related tasks. However, their lived experiences with these tools remain largely underexamined. This paper proposes DysLexLens, a low-resource LLM framework, designed to analyse dyslexic learners experience with AI through online forum discussions. DysLexLens is designed as an end-to-end, evidence-traceable architecture which transforms noisy social media posts into a dictionary-driven corpora, provides knowledge-graph (KG)-based question reasoning, generates verifiable query responses, and enables response evaluation through quantitative and human-grounded assessment. DysLexLens has four key features. First, it employs a dictionary-driven filtering method to construct a more focused Reddit corpus on dyslexia and AI, filtering out noisy and weakly related posts to improve the relevance of data collected from low-resource forum contexts. Second, it integrates LLM-assisted semantic analysis with KG-based query reasoning to uncover meaningful patterns. Third, it has quantitative evaluation metrics (RAGAS and Query Robustness) to measure LLM-generated response performance. Fourth, it provides structured qualitative validation guidelines for assessing response quality, with a specific focus on hallucination and evidence alignment. We demonstrate the effectiveness of DysLexLens using dyslexia-related Reddit forum data and 30 questions. The results show its potential generalisability to other low-resource forum data contexts. DysLexLens, sample data, questions and evaluation results are available at Github to support reproducibility.

TA-RAG: Tone-Aware Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Peer-Support Health Communication

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) successfully grounds large language model (LLM) outputs in trusted documents, but factual grounding alone is insufficient for sensitive peer-support health communication. In domains such as HIV peer support, responses must also be accessible, stigma-free, empathetic, and tailored to the recipient. This paper presents TA-RAG, a lightweight, prompt-based tone-aware RAG framework that embeds explicit tone control into a RAG pipeline without requiring model fine-tuning. We operationalise tone across four core components: stigma-free rewriting, readability adjustment, recipient adaptation, and empathy rephrasing. We evaluate TA-RAG through component-level tests using questions derived from HIV Online Learning Australia (HOLA), UNAIDS terminology guidance, readability metrics, peer-support standards from National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA), and a public empathy dataset. Results show that the TA-RAG's components improve their targeted communication quality while preserving key content. These findings emphasise that prompt-based tone control is a potential direction for making RAG outputs suitable for sensitive peer-support health communication.

Analysis of Terms of Service on Social Media Platforms: Consent Challenges and Assessment Metrics

Social media platforms typically obtain user consent through Terms of Service (ToS) presented at account creation, rather than through dedicated consent forms. This study investigates whether consent-related information is clearly communicated within these ToS documents. We propose and apply a three-dimensional consent evaluation framework encompassing Textual Accessibility, Semantic Transparency, and Interface Design as declared in ToS documents. Using a combination of computational and qualitative analyses, we assess ToS from 13 major social media platforms. Our findings reveal important shortcomings across platforms, including high linguistic complexity, widespread use of non-committal language, limited disclosure of data retention and sharing practices, and the absence of explicit interface-level commitments to granular or revocable consent. These results indicate that while consent is formally embedded in ToS, it is often presented in ways that constrain clarity and meaningful choice. Rather than treating ToS documents as informed consent instruments, this study positions them as consent-bearing documents whose design and content shape the conditions under which users are asked to agree to data practices. The proposed framework offers a systematic method for evaluating consent information within ToS in the absence of explicit consent forms and informs the design of clearer, more ethically robust consent mechanisms for data-intensive digital platforms.

Missing the human touch? A computational stylometry analysis of GPT-4 translations of online Chinese literature

Existing research indicates that machine translations (MTs) of literary texts are often unsatisfactory. MTs are typically evaluated using automated metrics and subjective human ratings, with limited focus on stylistic features. Evidence is also limited on whether state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) will reshape literary translation. This study examines the stylistic features of LLM translations, comparing GPT-4's performance to human translations in a Chinese online literature task. Computational stylometry analysis shows that GPT-4 translations closely align with human translations in lexical, syntactic, and content features, suggesting that LLMs might replicate the 'human touch' in literary translation style. These findings offer insights into AI's impact on literary translation from a posthuman perspective, where distinctions between machine and human translations become increasingly blurry.

Designing and Evaluating Presentation Strategies for Fact-Checked Content

With the rapid growth of online misinformation, it is crucial to have reliable fact-checking methods. Recent research on finding check-worthy claims and automated fact-checking have made significant advancements. However, limited guidance exists regarding the presentation of fact-checked content to effectively convey verified information to users. We address this research gap by exploring the critical design elements in fact-checking reports and investigating whether credibility and presentation-based design improvements can enhance users' ability to interpret the report accurately. We co-developed potential content presentation strategies through a workshop involving fact-checking professionals, communication experts, and researchers. The workshop examined the significance and utility of elements such as veracity indicators and explored the feasibility of incorporating interactive components for enhanced information disclosure. Building on the workshop outcomes, we conducted an online experiment involving 76 crowd workers to assess the efficacy of different design strategies. The results indicate that proposed strategies significantly improve users' ability to accurately interpret the verdict of fact-checking articles. Our findings underscore the critical role of effective presentation of fact reports in addressing the spread of misinformation. By adopting appropriate design enhancements, the effectiveness of fact-checking reports can be maximized, enabling users to make informed judgments.

Integrity 2022: Integrity in Social Networks and Media

This is the proposal for the third edition of the Workshop on Integrity in Social Networks and Media, Integrity 2022, following the success of the first two Workshops held in conjunction with the 13th & 14th ACM Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM) in 2020 and 2021. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss content and interaction integrity challenges in social networks and social media platforms. The event consists of (1) a series of invited talks by reputed members of the Integrity community from both academia and industry, (2) a call-for-papers for contributed talks and posters, and (3) a panel with the speakers.
