Geometric realizations of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces from hyperkähler contractions

Elements of the Brauer group $\operatorname{Br}(S)$ of a variety $S$ have geometric incarnations as étale-projective $S$-bundles, yet producing minimalist constructions of such bundles, which often power arithmetic applications, remains a difficult problem. When $S$ is a K3 surface with Picard rank $1$, we use the birational geometry of moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on $S$ to construct geometric realizations of nontrivial elements of $\operatorname{Br}(S)$. We recover many known geometric constructions of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces while providing a common moduli-theoretic framework for them. As a by-product, we give a new proof of the period-index theorem for very general K3 surfaces.

Generic Recovery of Permittivity and Permeability in Anisotropic Maxwell Systems

We study the inverse problem of recovering the constitutive tensors of a homogeneous anisotropic electromagnetic medium without magnetoelectric coupling (non-chiral) from its Fresnel surface, the characteristic variety of Maxwell's equations governing electromagnetic wave propagation. For known isotropic permeability, normalized to $μ= I$, we prove that the Fresnel surface uniquely determines the permittivity tensor $\varepsilon$, and that the associated Fresnel polynomial is reducible precisely when $\varepsilon$ has a repeated eigenvalue. For general, positive-definite symmetric tensors $(\varepsilon,μ)$, we prove that the Fresnel polynomial is generically irreducible over $\mathbb{C}$ and we identify the natural gauge symmetry under which it is invariant. Using geometric invariant theory, a powerful tool of modern algebraic geometry, we construct an affine quotient of the parameter space by this gauge action and prove that the induced Fresnel-polynomial map is birational onto its image. We deduce that, outside a proper real algebraic exceptional set, the real Fresnel surface determines $(\varepsilon,μ)$ up to gauge. This establishes generic uniqueness for the inverse problem and, to our knowledge, provides a new application of affine geometric invariant theory to gauge freedom in a PDE inverse problem.

Locally recoverable algebro-geometric codes from projective bundles

A code is locally recoverable when each symbol in one of its code words can be reconstructed as a function of $r$ other symbols. We use bundles of projective spaces over a line to construct locally recoverable codes with availability; that is, evaluation codes where each code word symbol can be reconstructed from several disjoint sets of other symbols. The simplest case, where the code's underlying variety is a plane, exhibits noteworthy properties: When $r = 1$, $2$, $3$, they are optimal; when $r \geq 4$, they are optimal with probability approaching $1$ as the alphabet size grows. Additionally, their information rate is close to the theoretical limit. In higher dimensions, our codes form a family of asymptotically good codes.

The Degree of Irrationality of del Pezzo Surfaces

For an irreducible variety $X$ over a field $k$, the degree of irrationality $\operatorname{irr}_k X$ is the minimal degree of a dominant rational map $X \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^{\operatorname{\dim} X}$. When $X$ is a curve, this is simply the gonality of $X$. We determine the possible degrees of irrationality of del Pezzo surfaces over an assortment of field types: number fields, local fields, finite fields, and arbitrary fields.

Moduli of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces and boundedness of Brauer groups

Inspired by constructions over the complex numbers of Dolgachev and Alexeev-Engel, we define moduli stacks $\mathcal{M}_{(L,\mathcal{A})/\mathbb{Z}}$ of lattice-polarized K3 surfaces over arbitrary bases, paying particular attention to the open locus $\mathcal{P}_{(L,\mathcal{A})/\mathbb{Z}}$ of primitive lattice polarizations. We introduce the notion of very small ample cones $\mathcal{a}$, after Alexeev and Engel's small cones, to construct smooth, separated stacks of lattice polarized K3 surfaces $\mathcal{P}_{(L,\mathcal{a})/\mathbb{Z}[1/N]}$ over suitable open subsets of $\textrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$. We add level structures, coming from classes in $\mathrm{H}^2(X,μ_n)$, to build moduli stacks $\mathcal{P}^{[n]}_{(L,\mathcal{A})/\mathbb{Z}}$ with a natural action by $\mathcal{P}_{(L,\mathcal{A})}\otimes \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ whose associated quotient $\mathcal{Q}^{[n]}_{(L,\mathcal{A})}$ contains an open substack $\mathcal{Q}^{(n)}_{(L,\mathcal{A})}$ whose points parametrize pairs K3 surfaces $X$ such that $\textrm{Pic}(X) \simeq L$, together with a class $α\in \textrm{Br}(X)$ of order $n$. When $L$ has rank 19, we show that the coarse moduli space $\mathrm{Q}_{(L,\mathcal{a}),\mathbb{C}}^{(n)}$ is a union of quasi-projective curves, each isomorphic to an open subvariety of the quotient of the upper half plane by a discrete subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. Fixing a prime $\ell$, we use this comparison to prove that the genus and the gonality of the components of $\mathrm{Q}_{(L,\mathcal{a}),\mathbb{C}}^{(\ell^{m})}$ grows with $m$, and hence that they have finitely many points over number fields of bounded degree. As an application, we furnish a new proof of a result by Cadoret--Charles, showing uniform boundedness of the $\ell$-primary torsion of Brauer groups of K3 surfaces over number fields varying in a $1$-dimensional lattice-polarized family.

Reconstruction of anisotropic stiffness tensors from partial data around one polarization

We study inverse problems in anisotropic elasticity using tools from algebraic geometry. The singularities of solutions to the elastic wave equation in dimension $n$ with an anisotropic stiffness tensor have propagation kinematics captured by so-called slowness surfaces, which are hypersurfaces in the cotangent bundle of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that turn out to be algebraic varieties. Leveraging the algebraic geometry of families of slowness surfaces we show that, for tensors in a dense open subset in a space of anisotropic two-dimensional stiffness tensors, a small amount of data around one polarization in an individual slowness surface uniquely determines the entire slowness surface and its stiffness tensor. In three dimensions, for generic orthorhombic and monoclinic stiffness tensors, a small number of anomalous companions give rise to the same slowness surface; nevertheless, we conjecture that in the most anisotropic setting (triclinic) the tensor is unique, as in two dimensions. The partial data needed to determine a tensor arises naturally from seismological measurements or geometrized versions of seismic inverse problems. Additionally, we explain how the reconstruction of the stiffness tensor can be carried out effectively, using Gröbner bases. Our uniqueness or finiteness results fail for symmetric materials (e.g., fully isotropic), evidencing the counterintuitive claim that inverse problems in elasticity can become more tractable with increasing asymmetry.

Reduction of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces, rationality and derived equivalence

We consider the reduction of Brauer classes on surfaces over number fields, with a view toward applications to rationality and derived equivalence. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial upon reduction for a set of places of positive natural density. As a consequence, there are cubic fourfolds which become rational upon reduction for a positive proportion of places, and there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent upon reduction for a positive proportion of places.

Explicit computation of symmetric differentials and its application to quasi-hyperbolicity

We develop explicit techniques to investigate algebraic quasi-hyperbolicity of singular surfaces through the constraints imposed by symmetric differentials. We apply these methods to prove that rational curves on Barth's sextic surface, apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least four singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. On the surface classifying perfect cuboids, our methods show that rational curves, again apart from some well-known ones, must pass through at least seven singularities, and that genus 1 curves must pass through at least two. We also improve lower bounds on the dimension of the space of symmetric differentials on surfaces with $A_1$-singularities, and use our work to show that Barth's decic, Sarti's surface, and the surface parametrizing $3\times 3$ magic squares of squares are all algebraically quasi-hyperbolic.

Locally recoverable codes on surfaces

A linear error correcting code is a subspace of a finite-dimensional space over a finite field with a fixed coordinate system. Such a code is said to be locally recoverable with locality $r$ if, for every coordinate, its value at a codeword can be deduced from the value of (certain) $r$ other coordinates of the codeword. These codes have found many recent applications, e.g., to distributed cloud storage. We will discuss the problem of constructing good locally recoverable codes and present some constructions using algebraic surfaces that improve previous constructions and sometimes provide codes that are optimal in a precise sense. The main conceptual contribution of this paper is to consider surfaces fibered over a curve in such a way that each recovery set is constructed from points in a single fiber. This allows us to use the geometry of the fiber to guarantee the local recoverability and use the global geometry of the surface to get a hold on the standard parameters of our codes. We look in detail at situations where the fibers are rational or elliptic curves and provide many examples applying our methods.

Campana points of bounded height on vector group compactifications

We initiate a systematic quantitative study of subsets of rational points that are integral with respect to a weighted boundary divisor on Fano orbifolds. We call the points in these sets Campana points. Earlier work of Campana and subsequently Abramovich shows that there are several reasonable competing definitions for Campana points. We use a version that delineates well different types of behaviour of points as the weights on the boundary divisor vary. This prompts a Manin-type conjecture on Fano orbifolds for sets of Campana points that satisfy a klt (Kawamata log terminal) condition. By importing work of Chambert-Loir and Tschinkel to our set-up, we prove a log version of Manin's conjecture for klt Campana points on equivariant compactifications of vector groups.

Abelian $n$-division fields of elliptic curves and Brauer groups of product Kummer & abelian surfaces

Let $Y$ be a principal homogeneous space of an abelian surface, or a K3 surface, over a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In 2008, Skorobogatov and Zarhin showed that the Brauer group modulo algebraic classes $\text{Br}\, Y/ \text{Br}_1\, Y$ is finite. We study this quotient for the family of surfaces that are geometrically isomorphic to a product of isogenous non-CM elliptic curves, as well as the related family of geometrically Kummer surfaces; both families can be characterized by their geometric Néron-Severi lattices. Over a field of characteristic $0$, we prove that the existence of a strong uniform bound on the size of the odd-torsion of $\text{Br}\, Y / \text{Br}_1\, Y$ is equivalent to the existence of a strong uniform bound on integers $n$ for which there exist non-CM elliptic curves with abelian $n$-division fields. Using the same methods we show that, for a fixed prime $p$, a number field $k$ of fixed degree $r$, and a fixed discriminant of the geometric Néron-Severi lattice, $(\text{Br}\, Y / \text{Br}_1\, Y)[p^\infty]$ is bounded by a constant that depends only on $p$, $r$, and the discriminant.

Cubic fourfolds fibered in sextic del Pezzo surfaces

We exhibit new examples of rational cubic fourfolds, parametrized by a countably infinite union of codimension-two subvarieties in the moduli space. Our examples are fibered in sextic del Pezzo surfaces over the projective plane; they are rational whenever the fibration has a rational section.

Odd order obstructions to the Hasse principle on general K3 surfaces

We show that odd order transcendental elements of the Brauer group of a K3 surface can obstruct the Hasse principle. We exhibit a general K3 surface $Y$ of degree 2 over $\mathbb{Q}$ together with a three torsion Brauer class $α$ that is unramified at all primes except for 3, but ramifies at all 3-adic points of $Y$. Motivated by Hodge theory, the pair $(Y, α)$ is constructed from a cubic fourfold $X$ of discriminant 18 birational to a fibration into sextic del Pezzo surfaces over the projective plane. Notably, our construction does not rely on the presence of a central simple algebra representative for $α$. Instead, we prove that a sufficient condition for such a Brauer class to obstruct the Hasse principle is insolubility of the fourfold $X$ (and hence the fibers) over $\mathbb{Q}_3$ and local solubility at all other primes.

Locally recoverable codes from algebraic curves and surfaces

A locally recoverable code is a code over a finite alphabet such that the value of any single coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from the values of a small subset of other coordinates. Building on work of Barg, Tamo, and Vlăduţ, we present several constructions of locally recoverable codes from algebraic curves and surfaces.

Level structures on abelian varieties, Kodaira dimensions, and Lang's conjecture

Assuming Lang's conjecture, we prove that for a fixed prime $p$, number field $K$, and positive integer $g$, there is an integer $r$ such that no principally polarized abelian variety $A/K$ of dimension $g$ has full level $p^r$ structure. To this end, we use a result of Zuo to prove that for each closed subvariety $X$ in the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, there exists a level $m_X$ such that the irreducible components of the preimage of $X$ in $\mathcal{A}_g^{[m]}$ are of general type for $m > m_X$.

Campana points, Vojta's conjecture, and level structures on semistable abelian varieties

We introduce a qualitative conjecture, in the spirit of Campana, to the effect that certain subsets of rational points on a variety over a number field, or a Deligne-Mumford stack over a ring of S-integers, cannot be Zariski dense. The conjecture interpolates, in a way that we make precise, between Lang's conjecture for rational points on varieties of general type over number fields, and the conjecture of Lang and Vojta that asserts that S-integral points on a variety of logarithmic general type are not Zariski-dense. We show our conjecture follows from Vojta's conjecture. Assuming our conjecture, we prove the following theorem: Fix a number field K, a finite set S of places of K containing the infinite places, and a positive integer g. Then there is an integer m_0 such that, for any m > m_0, no principally polarized abelian variety A/K of dimension g with semistable reduction outside of S has full level-m structure.

Kodaira dimension of moduli of special cubic fourfolds

A special cubic fourfold is a smooth hypersurface of degree three and dimension four that contains a surface not homologous to a complete intersection. Special cubic fourfolds give rise to a countable family of Noether-Lefschetz divisors C_d in the moduli space C of smooth cubic fourfolds. These divisors are irreducible 19-dimensional varieties birational to certain orthogonal modular varieties. We use the "low-weight cusp form trick" of Gritsenko, Hulek, and Sankaran to obtain information about the Kodaira dimension of C_d. For example, if d = 6n + 2, then we show that C_d is of general type for n > 18, n not in {20,21,25}, it has nonnegative Kodaira dimension if n > 13 and if n is not equal to 15. In combination with prior work of Hassett, Lai, and Nuer, our investigation leaves only 20 values of d for which no information on the Kodaira dimension of C_d is known. We discuss some questions pertaining to the arithmetic of K3 surfaces raised by our results.

Level structures on abelian varieties and Vojta's conjecture

Assuming Vojta's conjecture, and building on recent work of the authors, we prove that, for a fixed number field $K$ and positive integer $g$, there is an integer $m_0$ such that for any $m > m_0$ there is no principally polarized abelian variety $A/K$ of dimension $g$ with full level-$m$ structure. To this end, we develop a version of Vojta's conjecture for Deligne-Mumford stacks, which we deduce from Vojta's conjecture for schemes.
