Addition energies of a Quantum Dot with harmonic electron-electron interactions

We study a two dimensional electron system in a parabolic confining potential and constant magnetic field for the case of harmonic electron-electron interaction. We present analytic results for the electrochemical potential versus magnetic field and discuss the effects of correlation in connection with the addition energy of a Quantum Dot with few electrons.

Some exact results for the multicomponent t-J model

We present a generalization of the Sutherland's multicomponent model. Our extension includes both the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic t-J model for any value of the exchange coupling J and the hopping parameter t. We prove rigorously that for one dimensional chains the ground-state of the generalized model is non-degenerate. As a consequence, the ordering of energy levels of the antiferromagnetic t-J model is determined. Our result rigorously proves and extends the analysis carried out by Sutherland in establishing the phase diagram of the model as a function of the number of components.

Effective lattice actions for correlated electrons

We present an exact, unconstrained representation of the electron operators in terms of operators of opposite statistics. We propose a path--integral representation for the $t$-$J$ model and introduce a parameter controlling the semiclassical behaviour. We extend the functional approach to the Hubbard model and show that the mean--field theory is equivalent to considering, at Hamiltonian level, the Falikov--Kimball model. Connections with a bond-charge model are also discussed.

Phase separation in the large-spin {\it t}-{\it J} model

We investigate the phase diagram of the two dimensional {\it t}-{\it J} model using a recently developed technique that allows to solve the mean-field model hamiltonian with a variational calculation. The accuracy of our estimate is controlled by means of a small parameter $1/q$, analogous to the inverse spin magnitude $1/s$ employed in studying quantum spin systems. The mathematical aspects of the method and its connection with other large-spin approaches are discussed in details. In the large-$q$ limit the problem of strongly correlated electron systems turns in the minimization of a total energy functional. We have performed numerically this optimization problem on a finite but large $L\times L$ lattice. For a single hole the static small-polaron solution is stable unless for small values of $J$, where polarons of increasing sizes have lower energy. At finite doping we recover phase separation above a critical $J$ and for any electron density, showing that the Emery {\it et al.} picture represents the semiclassical behaviour of the {\it t}-{\it J} model. Quantum fluctuations are expected to be very important especially in the small $J$ -- small doping region, where phase separation may also be suppressed.
