Modified weighted power variations of the Hermite process and applications to integrated volatility

We study the asymptotic behaviour of modified weighted power variations of the Hermite process of arbitrary order. By selecting suitable "good" increments and exploiting their decomposition into dominant independent components, we establish a central limit theorem for weighted $p$-variations using tools from Stein-Malliavin calculus. Our results extend previous works on modified quadratic and wavelet-based variations to general powers and to weighted settings, with explicit bounds in Wasserstein distance. We further apply these limit theorems to construct asymptotically Gaussian estimators of integrated volatility in Hermite-driven models, thereby extending fBm-based methods to non-Gaussian settings. The last part of our work contains numerical simulations which illustrate the practical performance of the proposed estimators.

Numerical simulation of Generalized Hermite Processes

Hermite processes are paradigmatic examples of stochastic processes which can belong to any Wiener chaos of an arbitrary order; the wellknown fractional Brownian motion belonging to the Gaussian first order Wiener chaos and the Rosenblatt process belonging to the non-Gaussian second order Wiener chaos are two particular cases of them. Except these two particular cases no simulation method for sample paths of Hermite processes is available so far. The goal of our article is to introduce a new method which potentially allows to simulate sample paths of any Hermite process and even those of any generalized Hermite process. Our starting point is the representation for the latter process as random wavelet-typeseries, obtained in our very recent paper [3]. We construct from it a "concrete" sequence of piecewise linear continuous random functions which almost surely approximate sample paths of this process for the uniform norm on any compact interval, and we provide an almost sure estimate of the approximation error. Then, for the Rosenblatt process and more importantly for the third order Hermite process, we propose algorithms allowing to implement this sequence and we illustrate them by several simulations. Python routines implementing these synthesis procedures are available upon request.

On Construction, Properties and Simulation of Haar-Based Multifractional Processes

Multifractional processes extend the concept of fractional Brownian motion by replacing the constant Hurst parameter with a time-varying Hurst function. This extension allows for modulation of the roughness of sample paths over time. The paper introduces a new class of multifractional processes, the Gaussian Haar-based multifractional processes (GHBMP), which is based on the Haar wavelet series representations. The resulting processes cover a significantly broader set of Hurst functions compared to the existing literature, enhancing their suitability for both practical applications and theoretical studies. The theoretical properties of these processes are investigated. Simulation studies conducted for various Hurst functions validate the proposed model and demonstrate its applicability, even for Hurst functions exhibiting discontinuous behaviour.

On filter-type estimation of discretely sampled cyclic long-memory processes

The generalized filtered method of moments was developed in the recent papers by Alomari et al., 2020, and Ayache et al., 2022. It used functional data obtained from continuously sampled cyclic long-memory stochastic processes to simultaneously estimate their parameters. However, the majority of applications deal with discretely sampled processes or time series. This paper extends the approach to accommodate discrete-time scenarios. It proves that the new discrete estimates exhibit analogous properties to the continuous case and are strongly consistent with the same rates of convergence. The numerical study results are presented to illustrate the theoretical findings and to indicate the sampling rates and resolution levels required for accurate estimates.

An Optimal Uniform Modulus of Continuity for Harmonizable Fractional Stable Motion

Non-Gaussian Harmonizable Fractional Stable Motion (HFSM) is a natural and important extension of the well-known Fractional Brownian Motion to the framework of heavy-tailed stable distributions. It was introduced several decades ago; however its properties are far from being completely understood. In our present paper we determine the optimal power of the logarithmic factor in a uniform modulus of continuity for HFSM, which solves an open old problem. The keystone of our strategy consists in Abel transforms of the LePage series expansions of the random coefficients of the wavelets series representation of HFSM. Our methodology can be extended to more general harmonizable stable processes and fields.

Asymptotic normality for a modified quadratic variation of the Hermite process

We consider a modified quadratic variation of the Hermite process based on some well-chosen increments of this process. These special increments have the very useful property to be independent and identically distributed up to asymptotically negligible remainders. We prove that this modified quadratic variation satisfies a Central Limit Theorem and we derive its rate of convergence under the Wasserstein distance via Stein-Malliavin calculus. As a consequence, we construct, for the first time in the literature related to Hermite processes, a strongly consistent and asymptotically normal estimator for the Hurst parameter.

Wavelet-Type Expansion of Generalized Hermite Processes with rate of convergence

Wavelet-type random series representations of the well-known Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) and many other related stochastic processes and fields have started to be introduced since more than two decades. Such representations provide natural frameworks for approximating almost surely and uniformly rough sample paths at different scales and for study of various aspects of their complex erratic behavior. Hermite process of an arbitrary integer order $d$, which extends FBM, is a paradigmatic example of a stochastic process belonging to the $d$th Wiener chaos. It was introduced very long time ago, yet many of its properties are still unknown when $d\ge 3$. In a paper published in 2004, Pipiras raised the problem to know whether wavelet-type random series representations with a well-localized smooth scaling function, reminiscent to those for FBM due to Meyer, Sellan and Taqqu, can be obtained for a Hermite process of any order $d$. He solved it in this same paper in the particular case $d=2$ in which the Hermite process is called the Rosenblatt process. Yet, the problem remains unsolved in the general case $d\ge 3$. The main goal of our article is to solve it, not only for usual Hermite processes but also for generalizations of them. Another important goal of our article is to derive almost sure uniform estimates of the errors related with approximations of such processes by scaling functions parts of their wavelet-type random series representations.

Asymptotic normality of simultaneous estimators of cyclic long-memory processes

Spectral singularities at non-zero frequencies play an important role in investigating cyclic or seasonal time series. The publication [2] introduced the generalized filtered method-of-moments approach to simultaneously estimate singularity location and long-memory parameters. This paper continues studies of these simultaneous estimators. A wide class of Gegenbauer-type semi-parametric models is considered. Asymptotic normality of several statistics of the cyclic and long-memory parameters is proved. New adjusted estimates are proposed and investigated. The theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical results. The methodology includes wavelet transformations as a particular case.

Wavelet series representation for multifractional multistable Riemann-Liouville process

The main goal of this paper is to construct a wavelet-type random series representation for a random field $X$, defined by a multistable stochastic integral, which generates a multifractional multistable Riemann-Liouville (mmRL) process $Y$. Such a representation provides, among other things, an efficient method of simulation of paths of $Y$. In order to obtain it, we expand in the Haar basis the integrand associated with $X$ and we use some fundamental properties of multistable stochastic integrals. Then, thanks to the Abel's summation rule and the Doob's maximal inequality for discrete submartingales, we show that this wavelet-type random series representation of $X$ is convergent in a strong sense: almost surely in some spaces of continuous functions. Also, we determine an estimate of its almost sure rate of convergence in these spaces.

Wavelet Series Representation and Geometric Properties of Harmonizable Fractional Stable Sheets

Let $Z^H= \{Z^H(t), t \in \R^N\}$ be a real-valued $N$-parameter harmonizable fractional stable sheet with index $H = (H_1, \ldots, H_N) \in (0, 1)^N$. We establish a random wavelet series expansion for $Z^H$ which is almost surely convergent in all the Hölder spaces $C^γ([-M,M]^N)$, where $M>0$ and $γ\in (0, \min\{H_1,\ldots, H_N\})$ are arbitrary. One of the main ingredients for proving the latter result is the LePage representation for a rotationally invariant stable random measure. Also, let $X=\{X(t), t \in \R^N\}$ be an $\R^d$-valued harmonizable fractional stable sheet whose components are independent copies of $Z^H$. By making essential use of the regularity of its local times, we prove that, on an event of positive probability, the formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the inverse image $X^{-1}(F)$ holds for all Borel sets $F \subseteq \R^d$. This is referred to as a uniform Hausdorff dimension result for the inverse images.

Lower bound for local oscillations of Hermite processes

The most known example of a class of non-Gaussian stochastic processes which belongs to the homogenous Wiener chaos of an arbitrary order N > 1 are probably Hermite processes of rank N. They generalize fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and Rosenblatt process in a natural way. They were introduced several decades ago. Yet, in contrast with fBm and many other Gaussian and stable stochastic processes and fields related to it, few results on path behavior of Hermite processes are available in the literature. For instance the natural issue of whether or not their paths are nowhere differentiable functions has not yet been solved even in the most simple case of the Rosenblatt process. The goal of our article is to derive a quasi-optimal lower bound of the asymptotic behavior of local oscillations of paths of Hermite processes of any rank N, which, among other things, shows that these paths are nowhere differentiable functions.

Estimation of seasonal long-memory parameters

This paper studies seasonal long-memory processes with Gegenbauer-type spectral densities. Estimates for singularity location and long-memory parameters based on general filter transforms are proposed. It is proved that the estimates are almost surely convergent to the true values of parameters. Solutions of the estimation equations are studied and adjusted statistics are proposed. Numerical results are presented to confirm the theoretical findings.

A new Multifractional Process with Random Exponent

A first type of Multifractional Process with Random Exponent (MPRE) was constructed several years ago in (Ayache, Taqqu, 2005) by replacing in a wavelet series representation of Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) the Hurst parameter by a random variable depending on the time variable. In the present article, we propose another approach for constructing another type of MPRE. It consists in substituting to the Hurst parameter, in a stochastic integral representation of the high-frequency part of FBM, a random variable depending on the integration variable. The MPRE obtained in this way offers, among other things, the advantages to have a representation through classical Itô integral and to be less difficult to simulate than the first type of MPRE, previously introduced in (Ayache, Taqqu, 2005). Yet, the study of Hölder regularity of this new MPRE is a significantly more challenging problem than in the case of the previous one. Actually, it requires to develop a new methodology relying on an extensive use of the Haar basis.

Behaviour of linear multifractional stable motion: membership of a critical Hölder space

The study of path behaviour of stochastic processes is a classical topic in probability theory and related areas. In this frame, a natural question one can address is: whether or not sample paths belong to a critical Hölder space? The answer to this question is negative in the case of Brownian motion and many other stochastic processes: it is well-known that despite the fact that Brownian paths satisfy, on each compact interval $I$, a Hölder condition of any order strictly less than $1/2$, they fail to belong to the critical Hölder space $\mathcal{C}^{1/2}(I)$. In this article, we show that a different phenomenon happens in the case of linear multifractional stable motion (LMSM): for any given compact interval one can find a critical Hölder space to which sample paths belong. Among other things, this result improves an upper estimate, recently derived in Biermé, Lacaux (2013), on behaviour of LMSM, by showing that the logarithmic factor in it is not needed.

Stationary increments harmonizable stable fields: upper estimates on path behaviour

Studying sample path behaviour of stochastic fields/processes is a classical research topic in probability theory and related areas such as fractal geometry. To this end, many methods have been developed since a long time in Gaussian frames. They often rely on some underlying "nice" Hilbertian structure, and can also require finiteness of moments of high order. Therefore, they can hardly be transposed to frames of heavy-tailed stable probability distributions. However, in the case of some linear non-anticipative moving average stable fields/processes, such as the linear fractional stable sheet and the linear multifractional stable motion, rather new wavelet strategies have already proved to be successful in order to obtain sharp moduli of continuity and other results on sample path behaviour. The main goal of our article is to show that, despite the difficulties inherent in the frequency domain, such kind of a wavelet methodology can be generalized and improved, so that it also becomes fruitful in a general harmonizable stable setting with stationary increments. Let us point out that there are large differences between this harmonizable setting and the moving average stable one.

Uniformly and strongly consistent estimation for the Hurst function of a Linear Multifractional Stable Motion

Since the middle of the 90's, multifractional processes have been introduced for overcoming some limitations of the classical Fractional Brownian Motion model. In their context, the Hurst parameter becomes a Holder continuous function H(?) of the time variable t. Linear Multifractional Stable Motion (LMSM) is the most known one of them with heavy-tailed distributions. Generally speaking, global and local sample path roughness of a multifractional process are determined by values of its parameter $H(\cdot)$; therefore, since about two decades, several authors have been interested in their statistical estimation, starting from discrete variations of the process. Because of complex dependence structures of variations, in order to show consistency of estimators one has to face challenging problems. The main goal of our article is to introduce, in the setting of the symmetric alpha-stable non-anticipative moving average LMSM, where $α\in (1; 2)$, a new strategy for dealing with such kind of problems. It can also be useful in other contexts. In contrast with previously developed strategies, this new one does not require to look for sharp estimates of covariances related to functionals of variations. Roughly speaking, it consists of expressing variations in such a way that they become independent random variables up to negligible remainders. Thanks to it, we obtain, an almost surely and $L^p(Ω), p\in(0; 4]$, consistent estimator of the whole function $H(\cdot)$, which converges, uniformly in t, and even for some Holder norms. Also, we obtain estimates for the rates of convergence. Such kind of strong consistency results in uniform and Holder norms are rather unusual in the literature on statistical estimation of functions.

Linear Multifractional Stable Motion: wavelet estimation of $H(\cdot)$ and $\al$ parameters

Linear Fractional Stable Motion (LFSM) of Hurst parameter $H$ and of stability parameter $\al$, is one of the most classical extensions of the well-known Gaussian Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM), to the setting of heavy-tailed stable distributions \cite{SamTaq,EmMa}. In order to overcome some limitations of its areas of application, coming from stationarity of its increments as well as constancy over time of its self-similarity exponent, Stoev and Taqqu introduced in \cite{stoev2004stochastic} an extension of LFSM, called Linear Multifractional Stable Motion (LMSM), in which the Hurst parameter becomes a function $H(\cdot)$ depending on the time variable $t$. Similarly to LFSM, the tail heaviness of the marginal distributions of LMSM is determined by $\al$; also, under some conditions, its self-similarity is governed by $H(\cdot)$ and its path roughness is closely related to $H(\cdot)-1/\al$. Namely, it was shown in \cite{stoev2004stochastic} that $H(t_0)$ is the self-similarity exponent of LMSM at a time $t_0\neq 0$; moreover, very recently, it was established in \cite{hamonier2012lmsm}, that the quantities $\min_{t\in I} H(t)-1/\al$, and $H(t_0)-1/\al$, are respectively the uniform Hölder exponent of LMSM on a compact interval $I$, and its local Hölder exponent at $t_0$. The main goal of our article, is to construct, using wavelet coefficients of LMSM, strongly consistent (i.e. almost surely convergent) statistical estimators of $\min_{t\in I} H(t)$, $H(t_0)$, and $\al$; our estimation results, are obtained when $\al\in (1,2)$, and, $H(\cdot)$ is a Hölder function smooth enough, with values in a compact subinterval $[\underline{H},\bar{H}]$ of $(1/\al,1)$.

Linear Multifractional Stable Motion: fine path properties

Linear Multifractional Stable Motion (LMSM), denoted by $\{Y(t):t\in\R\}$, has been introduced by Stoev and Taqqu in 2004-2005, by substituting to the constant Hurst parameter of a classical Linear Fractional Stable Motion (LFSM), a deterministic function $H(\cdot)$ depending on the time variable $t$; we always suppose $H(\cdot)$ to be continuous and with values in $(1/\al,1)$, also, in general we restrict its range to a compact interval. The main goal of our article is to make a comprehensive study of the local and asymptotic behavior of $\{Y(t):t\in\R\}$; to this end, one needs to derive fine path properties of $\{X(u,v) : (u,v)\in\R \times (1/α,1)\}$, the field generating the latter process (i.e. one has $Y(t)=X(t,H(t))$ for all $t\in\R$). This leads us to introduce random wavelet series representations of $\{X(u,v) : (u,v)\in\R \times (1/α,1)\}$ as well as of all its pathwise partial derivatives of any order with respect to $v$. Then our strategy consists in using wavelet methods. Among other things, we solve a conjecture of Stoev and Taqqu, concerning the existence for LMSM of a modification with almost surely continuous paths; moreover we provides some bounds for the local Hölder exponent of LMSM: namely, we obtain a quasi-optimal global modulus of continuity for it, and also an optimal local one. It is worth noticing that, even in the quite classical case of LFSM, the latter optimal local modulus of continuity provides a new result which was unknown so far.
