Discrete gauging and Hasse diagrams

We analyse the Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD gauge theories with non-connected gauge groups $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N) = \mathrm{SU}(N) \rtimes_{I,II} \mathbb{Z}_2$ whose study was initiated in arXiv:1804.01108. We derive the Hasse diagrams corresponding to the Higgs mechanism using adapted characters for representations of non-connected groups. We propose 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ magnetic quivers for the Higgs branches in the type $I$ discrete gauging case, in the form of recently introduced wreathed quivers, and provide extensive checks by means of Coulomb branch Hilbert series computations.

Branes, Quivers, and the Affine Grassmannian

Brane systems provide a large class of gauge theories that arise in string theory. This paper demonstrates how such brane systems fit with a somewhat exotic geometric object, called the affine Grassmannian. This gives a strong motivation to study physical aspects of the affine Grassmannian. Explicit quivers are presented throughout the paper, and a quiver addition algorithm to generate the affine Grassmannian is introduced. An important outcome of this study is a set of quivers for new elementary slices.

Orthosymplectic Implosions

We propose quivers for Coulomb branch constructions of universal implosions for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending the work on special unitary groups in arXiv:2004.09620. The quivers are unitary-orthosymplectic as opposed to the purely unitary quivers in the A-type case. Where possible we check our proposals using Hilbert series techniques.

Magnetic Lattices for Orthosymplectic Quivers

For any gauge theory, there may be a subgroup of the gauge group which acts trivially on the matter content. While many physical observables are not sensitive to this fact, the identification of the precise gauge group becomes crucial when the magnetic spectrum of the theory is considered. This question is addressed in the context of Coulomb branches for $3$d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories, which are moduli spaces of dressed monopole operators. Since monopole operators are characterized by their magnetic charge, the identification of the gauge group is imperative for the determination of the magnetic lattice. It is well-known that the gauge group of unframed unitary quivers is the product of all unitary nodes in the quiver modded out by the diagonal $\mathrm{U}(1)$ acting trivially on the matter representation. This reasoning generalises to the notion that a choice of gauge group associated to a quiver is given by the product of the individual nodes quotiented by any subgroup that acts trivially on the matter content. For unframed (unitary-) orthosymplectic quivers composed of $\mathrm{SO}(\textrm{even})$, $\mathrm{USp}$, and possibly $\mathrm{U}$ gauge nodes, the maximal subgroup acting trivially is a diagonal $\mathbb{Z}_2$. For unframed unitary quivers with a single $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ node it is $\mathbb{Z}_N$. We use this notion to compute the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of many unitary-orthosymplectic quivers. Examples include nilpotent orbit closures of the exceptional E-type algebras and magnetic quivers that arise from brane physics. This includes Higgs branches of theories with 8 supercharges in dimensions $4$, $5$, and $6$. A crucial ingredient in the calculation of exact refined Hilbert series is the alternative construction of unframed magnetic quivers from resolved Slodowy slices, whose Hilbert series can be derived from Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

(5d RG-flow) Trees in the Tropical Rain Forest

5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) can be obtained from 6d SCFTs by circle compactification and mass deformation. Successive decoupling of hypermultiplet matter and RG-flow generates a decoupling tree of descendant 5d SCFTs. In this paper we determine the magnetic quivers and Hasse diagrams, that encode the Higgs branches of 5d SCFTs, for entire decoupling trees. Central to this undertaking is the approach in arXiv:2008.05577, which, starting from the generalized toric polygons (GTPs) dual to 5-brane webs/tropical curves, provides a systematic and succinct derivation of magnetic quivers and their Hasse diagrams. The decoupling in the GTP description is straightforward, and generalizes the standard flop transitions of curves in toric polygons. We apply this approach to a large class of 5d KK-theories, and compute the Higgs branches for their descendants. In particular we determine the decoupling tree for all rank 2 5d SCFTs. For each tree, we also identify the flavor symmetry algebras from the magnetic quivers, including non-simply-laced flavor symmetries.

(Symplectic) Leaves and (5d Higgs) Branches in the Poly(go)nesian Tropical Rain Forest

We derive the structure of the Higgs branch of 5d superconformal field theories or gauge theories from their realization as a generalized toric polygon (or dot diagram). This approach is motivated by a dual, tropical curve decomposition of the $(p,q)$ 5-brane-web system. We define an edge coloring, which provides a decomposition of the generalized toric polygon into a refined Minkowski sum of sub-polygons, from which we compute the magnetic quiver. The Coulomb branch of the magnetic quiver is then conjecturally identified with the 5d Higgs branch. Furthermore, from partial resolutions, we identify the symplectic leaves of the Higgs branch and thereby the entire foliation structure. In the case of strictly toric polygons, this approach reduces to the description of deformations of the Calabi-Yau singularities in terms of Minkowski sums.

Classification of all $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ moduli space orbifold geometries at rank 2

We classify orbifold geometries which can be interpreted as moduli spaces of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ superconformal field theories up to rank 2 (complex dimension 6). The large majority of the geometries we find correspond to moduli spaces of known theories or discretely gauged version of them. Remarkably, we find 6 geometries which are not realized by any known theory, of which 3 have an $\mathcal{N}=2$ Coulomb branch slice with a non-freely generated coordinate ring, suggesting the existence of new, exotic $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories.

S-fold magnetic quivers

Magnetic quivers and Hasse diagrams for Higgs branches of rank $r$ 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs arising from $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ $\mathcal{S}$-fold constructions are discussed. The magnetic quivers are derived using three different methods: 1) Using clues like dimension, global symmetry, and the folding parameter $\ell$ to guess the magnetic quiver. 2) From 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs as UV completions of 5d marginal theories, and specific FI deformations on their magnetic quiver, which is further folded by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$. 3) From T-duality of Type IIA brane systems of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs and explicit mass deformation of the resulting brane web followed by $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ folding. A choice of the ungauging scheme, either on a long node or on a short node, yields two different moduli spaces related by an orbifold action, thus suggesting a larger set of SCFTs in four dimensions than previously expected.

Quiver origami: discrete gauging and folding

We study two types of discrete operations on Coulomb branches of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theories using both abelianisation and the monopole formula. We generalise previous work on discrete quotients of Coulomb branches and introduce novel wreathed quiver theories. We further study quiver folding which produces Coulomb branches of non-simply laced quivers.

Magnetic Quivers from Brane Webs with O5 Planes

Magnetic quivers have led to significant progress in the understanding of gauge theories with 8 supercharges at UV fixed points. For a given low-energy gauge theory realised via a Type II brane construction, there exist magnetic quivers for the Higgs branches at finite and infinite gauge coupling. Comparing these moduli spaces allows to study the non-perturbative effects when transitioning to the fixed point. For 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SQCD, 5-brane webs have been an important tool for deriving magnetic quivers. In this work, the emphasis is placed on 5-brane webs with orientifold 5-planes which give rise to 5d theories with orthogonal or symplectic gauge groups. For this set-up, the magnetic quiver prescription is derived and contrasted against a unitary magnetic quiver description extracted from an O$7^-$ construction. Further validation is achieved by a derivation of the associated Hasse diagrams. An important class of families considered are the orthogonal exceptional $E_n$ families ($-\infty < n \leq 8$), realised as infinite coupling Higgs branches of $\mathrm{Sp}(k)$ gauge theories with fundamental matter. In particular, the moduli spaces are realised by a novel type of magnetic quivers, called unitary-orthosymplectic quivers.

Magnetic quivers for rank 1 theories

Magnetic quivers and Hasse diagrams for Higgs branches of rank 1 $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs are provided. These rank 1 theories fit naturally into families of higher rank theories, originating from higher dimensions, which are addressed.

Brane Webs and Magnetic Quivers for SQCD

It is widely considered that the classical Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD is a well understood object. However there is no satisfactory understanding of its structure. There are two complications: (1) the Higgs branch chiral ring contains nilpotent elements, as can easily be checked in the case of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ with 1 flavour. (2) the Higgs branch as a geometric space can in general be decomposed into two cones with nontrivial intersection, the baryonic and mesonic branches. To study the second point in detail we use the recently developed tool of magnetic quivers for five-brane webs, using the fact that the classical Higgs branch for theories with 8 supercharges does not change through dimensional reduction. We compare this approach with the computation of the hyper-Kähler quotient using Hilbert series techniques, finding perfect agreement if nilpotent operators are eliminated by the computation of a so called radical. We study the nature of the nilpotent operators and give conjectures for the Hilbert series of the full Higgs branch, giving new insights into the vacuum structure of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD. In addition we demonstrate the power of the magnetic quiver technique, as it allows us to identify the decomposition into cones, and provides us with the global symmetries of the theory, as a simple alternative to the techniques that were used to date.

Discrete gauge theories of charge conjugation

We define gauge theories whose gauge group includes charge conjugation as well as standard $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ transformations. When combined, these transformations form a novel type of group with a semidirect product structure. For $N$ even, we show that there are exactly two possible such groups which we dub $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$. We construct the transformation rules for the fundamental and adjoint representations, allowing us to explicitly build four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories based on $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$ and understand from first principles their global symmetry. We compute the Haar measure on the groups, which allows us to quantitatively study the operator content in protected sectors by means of the superconformal index. In particular, we find that both types of $\widetilde{\mathrm{SU}}(N)_{\mathrm{I,II}}$ groups lead to non-freely generated Coulomb branches.

On the moduli spaces of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 3$ SCFTs I: triple special Kähler structure

We initiate a systematic analysis of moduli spaces of vacua of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs. Our analysis is based on the one hand on the properties of $\mathcal{N}=3$ chiral rings --- which we review in detail and contrast with chiral rings of theories with less supersymmetry --- and on the other hand on constraints coming from low-energy supersymmetry. This leads us to introduce a new type of geometric structure, which characterizes $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFT moduli spaces, and that we call $triple\ special\ Kähler$ (TSK). A rank-$n$ TSK moduli space has complex dimension $3n$, and is singular at complex co-dimension 3 subspaces where charged states become massless. The structure of singularities defines a stratification of the TSK space in terms of lower-dimensional TSK manifolds.

The Higgs Mechanism -- Hasse Diagrams for Symplectic Singularities

We explore the geometrical structure of Higgs branches of quantum field theories with 8 supercharges in 3, 4, 5 and 6 dimensions. They are symplectic singularities, and as such admit a decomposition (or foliation) into so-called symplectic leaves, which are related to each other by transverse slices. We identify this foliation with the pattern of partial Higgs mechanism of the theory and, using brane systems and recently introduced notions of magnetic quivers and quiver subtraction, we formalise the rules to obtain the Hasse diagram which encodes the structure of the foliation. While the unbroken gauge symmetry and the number of flat directions are obtainable by classical field theory analysis for Lagrangian theories, our approach allows us to characterise the geometry of the Higgs branch by a Hasse diagram with symplectic leaves and transverse slices, thus refining the analysis and extending it to non-Lagrangian theories. Most of the Hasse diagrams we obtain extend beyond the cases of nilpotent orbit closures known in the mathematics literature. The geometric analysis developed in this paper is applied to Higgs branches of several Lagrangian gauge theories, Argyres-Douglas theories, five dimensional SQCD theories at the conformal fixed point, and six dimensional SCFTs.

Non-Connected Gauge Groups and the Plethystic Program

We present in the context of supersymmetric gauge theories an extension of the Weyl integration formula, first discovered by Robert Wendt, which applies to a class of non-connected Lie groups. This allows to count in a systematic way gauge-invariant chiral operators for these non-connected gauge groups. Applying this technique to $\mathrm{O}(n)$, we obtain, via the ADHM construction, the Hilbert series for certain instanton moduli spaces. We validate our general method and check our results via a Coulomb branch computation, using three-dimensional mirror symmetry.

Gauge theories from principally extended disconnected gauge groups

We introduce gauge theories based on a class of disconnected gauge groups, called principal extensions. Although in this work we focus on 4d theories with N=2 SUSY, such construction is independent of spacetime dimensions and supersymmetry. These groups implement in a consistent way the discrete gauging of charge conjugation, for arbitrary rank. Focusing on the principal extension of SU(N), we explain how many of the exact methods for theories with 8 supercharges can be put into practice in that context. We then explore the physical consequences of having a disconnected gauge group: we find that the Coulomb branch is generically non-freely generated, and the global symmetry of the Higgs branch is modified in a non-trivial way.

Universality of Toda equation in ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories

We show that extremal correlators in all Lagrangian ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories with a simple gauge group are governed by the same universal Toda system of equations, which dictates the structure of extremal correlators to all orders in the perturbation series. A key point is the construction of a convenient orthogonal basis for the chiral ring, by arranging towers of operators in order of increasing dimension, which has the property that the associated two-point functions satisfy decoupled Toda chain equations. We explicitly verify this in all known SCFTs based on $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge groups as well as in superconformal QCD based on orthogonal and symplectic groups. As a by-product, we find a surprising non-renormalization property for the ${\cal N}=2$ $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ SCFT with one hypermultiplet in the rank-2 symmetric representation and one hypermultiplet in the rank-2 antisymmetric representation, where the two-loop terms of a large class of supersymmetric observables identically vanish.
