Random Dehn function of groups

In this note, we study the notion of random Dehn function and compute an asymptotic upper bound for finitely presented acylindrically hyperbolic groups whose Dehn function is at most polynomial. By showing that in these cases, if the group is not hyperbolic, then the random Dehn function is strictly smaller than the usual Dehn function we confirm Gromov's intuition albeit in a different model. In fact, we show that in these cases the random Dehn function is at most quadratic.

Induced quasi-isometries of hyperbolic spaces, Markov chains, and acylindrical hyperbolicity

We show that quasi-isometries of (well-behaved) hierarchically hyperbolic groups descend to quasi-isometries of their maximal hyperbolic space. This has two applications, one relating to quasi-isometry invariance of acylindrical hyperbolicity, and the other a linear progress result for Markov chains. The appendix, by Jacob Russell, contains a partial converse under the (necessary) condition that the maximal hyperbolic space is one-ended.

Characterising quasi-isometries of the free group

We introduce the notion of mixed subtree quasi-isometries, which are self quasi-isometries of regular trees built in a specific inductive way. We then show that any self quasi-isometry of a regular tree is at bounded distance from a mixed-subtree quasi-isometry. Since the free group is quasi-isometric to a regular tree, this provides a way to describe all self quasi-isometries of the free group. In doing this, we also give a way of constructing quasi-isometries of the free group.

Some properties of Markov chains on the free group $\mathbb F_2$

Random walks cannot, in general, be pushed forward by quasi-isometries. Tame Markov chains were introduced as a `quasi-isometry invariant' are a generalization of random walks. In this paper, we construct several examples of tame Markov chains on the free group exhibiting `exotic' behaviour; one, where the drift is not well defined and one where the drift is well defined but the Central Limit Theorem does not hold. We show that this is not a failure of the notion of tame Markov chain, but rather that any quasi-isometry invariant theory that generalizes random walks will include examples without well-defined drift.

Random divergence of groups

The divergence of a group is a quasi-isometry invariant defined in terms of pairs of points and lengths of paths avoiding a suitable ball around the identity. In this paper we study "random divergence'', meaning the divergence at two points chosen according to independent random walks or Markov chains; the Markov chains version can be turned into a quasi-isometry invariant. We show that in many cases, such as for relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and right-angled Artin groups, the divergence at two randomly chosen points is with high probability equivalent to the divergence of the group. That is, generic points realise the largest possible divergence.

Random Artin groups

We introduce a new model of random Artin groups. The two variables we consider are the rank of the Artin groups and the set of permitted coefficients of their defining graphs. The heart of our model is to control the speed at which we make that set of permitted coefficients grow relatively to the growth of the rank of the groups, as it turns out different speeds yield very different results. We describe these speeds by means of (often polynomial) functions. In this model, we show that for a large range of such functions, a random Artin group satisfies most conjectures about Artin groups asymptotically almost surely. Our work also serves as a study of how restrictive the commonly studied families of Artin groups are, as we compute explicitly the probability that a random Artin group belongs to various families of Artin groups, such as the classes of $2$-dimensional Artin groups, $FC$-type Artin groups, large-type Artin groups, and others.

Markov chains on hyperbolic-like groups and quasi-isometries

We propose the study of Markov chains on groups as a "quasi-isometry invariant" theory that encompasses random walks. In particular, we focus on certain classes of groups acting on hyperbolic spaces including (non-elementary) hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, acylindrically hyperbolic 3-manifold groups, as well as fundamental groups of certain graphs of groups with edge groups of subexponential growth. For those, we prove a linear progress result and various applications, and these lead to a Central Limit Theorem for random walks on groups quasi-isometric to the ones we consider.
