An optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality in Gauss space

Let $Ω$ be a smooth, convex, unbounded domain of $\R^N$. Denote by $μ_1(Ω)$ the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the Hermite operator in $Ω$; we prove that $μ_1(Ω) \ge 1$. The result is sharp since equality sign is achieved when $Ω$ is a $N$-dimensional strip. Our estimate can be equivalently viewed as an optimal Poincaré-Wirtinger inequality for functions belonging to the weighted Sobolev space $H^1(Ω,dγ_N)$, where $γ_N$ is the $N$-dimensional Gaussian measure.

An isoperimetric inequality for a nonlinear eigenvalue problem

We prove an isoperimetric inequality of the Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn type for a nonlinear generalization of the first twisted Dirichlet eigenvalue. More precisely, we show that the minimizer among sets of given volume is the union of two equal balls.

Optimal sets for a class of minimization problems with convex constraints

We look for the minimizers of the functional $\jla{\la}(\oo)=\la|\oo|-P(\oo)$ among planar convex domains constrained to lie into a given ring. We prove that, according to the values of the parameter $\la$, the solutions are either a disc or a polygon. In this last case, we describe completely the polygonal solutions by reducing the problem to a finite dimensional optimization problem. We recover classical inequalities for convex sets involving area, perimeter and inradius or circumradius and find a new one.

Minimization of $λ_2(Ω)$ with a perimeter constraint

We study the problem of minimizing the second Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplacian operator among sets of given perimeter. In two dimensions, we prove that the optimum exists, is convex, regular, and its boundary contains exactly two points where the curvature vanishes. In $N$ dimensions, we prove a more general existence theorem for a class of functionals which is decreasing with respect to set inclusion and $γ$ lower semicontinuous.

On the maximization of a class of functionals on convex regions, and the characterization of the farthest convex set

We consider a family of functionals $J$ to be maximized over the planar convex sets $K$ for which the perimeter and Steiner point have been fixed. Assuming that $J$ is the integral of a quadratic expression in the support function $h$, we show that the maximizer is always either a triangle or a line segment (which can be considered as a collapsed triangle). Among the concrete consequences of the main theorem is the fact that, given any convex body $K_1$ of finite perimeter, the set in the class we consider that is farthest away in the sense of the $L^2$ distance is always a line segment. We also prove the same property for the Hausdorff distance.

What is the optimal shape of a pipe?

We consider an incompressible fluid in a three-dimensional pipe, following the Navier-Stokes system with classical boundary conditions. We are interested in the following question: is there any optimal shape for the criterion "energy dissipated by the fluid"? Moreover, is the cylinder the optimal shape? We prove that there exists an optimal shape in a reasonable class of admissible domains, but the cylinder is not optimal. For that purpose, we explicit the first order optimality condition, thanks to adjoint state and we prove that it is impossible that the adjoint state be a solution of this over-determined system when the domain is the cylinder. At last, we show some numerical simulations for that problem.

Shape Minimization of Dendritic Attenuation

What is the optimal shape of a dendrite? Of course, optimality refers to some particular criterion. In this paper, we look at the case of a dendrite sealed at one end and connected at the other end to a soma. The electrical potential in the fiber follows the classical cable equations as established by W. Rall. We are interested in the shape of the dendrite which minimizes either the attenuation in time of the potential or the attenuation in space. In both cases, we prove that the cylindrical shape is optimal.
