Multiband transport in RuO$_2$

We present electrical and thermal transport measurements in single crystals of the metallic oxide RuO$_2$. The resistivity and Seebeck coefficient measured up to 970K confirm the metallic nature of transport. Magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements as a function of orientation can be most easily described by a multiband transport model. We find that the ordinary Hall effect dominates any anomalous Hall signal in single crystals.

Investigation of Planckian behavior in a high-conductivity oxide: PdCrO$_2$

The layered delafossite metal PdCrO$_2$ is a natural heterostructure of highly conductive Pd layers Kondo coupled to localized spins in the adjacent Mott insulating CrO$_2$ layers. At high temperatures $T$ it has a $T$-linear resistivity which is not seen in the isostructural but non-magnetic PdCoO$_2$. The strength of the Kondo coupling is known, as-grown crystals are extremely high purity and the Fermi surface is both very simple and experimentally known. It is therefore an ideal material platform in which to investigate 'Planckian metal' physics. We do this by means of controlled introduction of point disorder, measurement of the thermal conductivity and Lorenz ratio and studying the sources of its high temperature entropy. The $T$-linear resistivity is seen to be due mainly to elastic scattering and to arise from a sum of several scattering mechanisms. Remarkably, this sum leads to a scattering rate within 10$\%$ of the Planckian value of $k_BT/$$\hbar$.

Structural study and evaluation of thermoelectric properties of single-phase isocubanite (CuFe2S3) synthesized via an ultra-fast efficient microwave radiation technique

The current state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials are generally composed of expensive, scarce, and toxic elements. In this respect, copper-based sulfide compounds have emerged as viable alternatives. Herein, we report for the first time the successful synthesis of single-phase cubic isocubanite CuFe2S3 using mechanical-alloying combined with microwave-assisted synthesis. The isocubanite phase synthesized via this ultra-fast out-of-equilibrium process exhibits a maximum thermoelectric figure of merit, zTmax ~ 0.14 at 673 K. Besides the thermoelectric properties, insights about the structure of isocubanite, based on the refinement of X-ray diffraction data and first principles calculations, are also investigated in detail. It confirms that the Cu-Fe cations in synthetic isocubanite overwhelmingly occupy the 4d sites of the cubic structure in an inherently disordered fashion.

Origin of Ising magnetism in Ca3Co2O6 unveiled by orbital imaging

The one-dimensional cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 is an intriguing material having an unconventional magnetic structure, displaying quantum tunneling phenomena in its magnetization. Using a newly developed experimental method, s-core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (s-NIXS), we were able to image the atomic Co 3d orbital that is responsible for the Ising magnetism in this system. We show that we can directly observe that it is the complex d2 orbital occupied by the sixth electron at the high-spin Co-trig{3+} (d6) sites that generates this behavior. This is extremely rare in the research field of transition metal compounds, and is only made possible by the delicately balanced prismatic trigonal coordination. The ability to directly relate the orbital occupation with the local crystal structure is essential to model the magnetic properties of this system.

The electrochemical storage mechanism in oxy-hydroxyfluorinated anatase for sodium-ion batteries

Replacing lithium ions with sodium ions as the charge carriers in rechargeable batteries can induce noticeable differences in the electrochemical storage mechanisms of electrode materials. Many material parameters, such as particle size, morphology, and the presence of defects, are known to further affect the storage mechanism. Here, we report an investigation of how the introduction of titanium vacancies into anatase TiO2 affects the sodium storage mechanism. From pair distribution function analysis, we observe that sodium ions are inserted into titanium vacancies at the early stage of the discharge process. This is supported by density functional theory calculations, which predict that sodium insertion is more favourable at vacancies than at interstitial sites. Our calculations also show that the intercalation voltage is sensitive to the anion coordination environment of the vacancy. Sodiation to higher concentrations induces a phase transition toward a disordered rhombohedral structure, similar to that observed in defect-free TiO2. Finally, we find that the X-ray diffraction pattern of the rhombohedral phase drastically changes depending on the composition and degree of disorder, providing further comprehension on the sodium storage mechanism of anatase.

Anisotropic thermal transport in magnetic intercalates Fe$_{x}$TiS$_2$

We present a study of the of thermal transport in thin single crystals of iron-intercalated titanium disulphide, Fe$_{x}$TiS$_2$ for $0\leq x \leq 0.20$. We determine the distribution of intercalants using high-resolution crystallographic and magnetic measurements, confirming the insertion of Fe without long-range ordering. We find that iron intercalation perturbs the lattice very little, and suppresses the tendency of TiS$_2$ to self-intercalate with excess Ti. We observe trends in the thermal conductivity that are compatible with our ab initio calculations of thermal transport in perfectly stoichiometric TiS$_2$.

Unconventional aspects of electronic transport in delafossite oxides

The electronic transport properties of the delafossite oxides ABO$_2$ are usually understood in terms of two well separated entities, namely, the triangular A$^+$ and (BO$_2$)$^-$ layers. Here we review several cases among this extensive family of materials where the transport depends on the interlayer coupling and displays unconventional properties. We review the doped thermoelectrics based on CuRhO$_2$ and CuCrO$_2$, which show a high-temperature recovery of Fermi-liquid transport exponents, as well as the highly anisotropic metals PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and PdCrO$_2$ where the sheer simplicity of the Fermi surface leads to unconventional transport. We present some of the theoretical tools that have been used to investigate these transport properties and review what can and cannot be learned from the extensive set of electronic structure calculations that have been performed.

Magnetization reversal in mixed ferrite-chromite perovskites with non magnetic cation on the A-site

In this work, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations in a classical model for RFe$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$O$_3$ with R=Y and Lu, comparing the numerical simulations with experiments and mean field calculations. In the analyzed compounds, the antisymmetric exchange or Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction induced a weak ferromagnetism due to a canting of the antiferromagnetically ordered spins. This model is able to reproduce the magnetization reversal (MR) observed experimentally in a field cooling process for intermediate $x$ values and the dependence with $x$ of the critical temperatures. We also analyzed the conditions for the existence of MR in terms of the strength of DM interactions between Fe$^{3+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions with the x values variations.

Impact of short-range order on transport properties of the two-dimensional metal PdCrO$_2$

We study the Hall and Nernst effects across the antiferromagnetic transition that reconstructs the quasi-2D Fermi surface of the metallic local moment antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$. We show that non- monotonic temperature dependence in the Hall effect and a sign change in the Nernst effect above the ordering temperature cannot be understood within a simple single-band transport model. The inclusion of coherent scattering by critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations can qualitatively account for these features in the transport coefficients. We discuss the implications of this for the pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductors, which have a similar Fermi surface and where the same transport signatures are observed.

Intrinsic effects of substitution and intercalation on thermal transport in two-dimensional TiS$_2$ single crystals

The promising thermoelectric material TiS$_2$ can be easily chemically doped and intercalated. We present here studies of single crystals that are intercalated with excess Ti or Co, or substituted with Ta. We demonstrate the intrinsic impact of these dopants on the thermal transport in the absence of grain boundary scattering. We show that Ta doping has the greatest impact on the thermal scattering rate per ion added, leading to a five-fold reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity as compared to stoichiometric single crystals.

Large anisotropic thermal conductivity of intrinsically two-dimensional metallic oxide PdCoO$_2$

The highly conductive layered metallic oxide \pdcoo{} is a near-perfect analogue to an alkali metal in two dimensions. It is distinguished from other two-dimensional electron systems where the Fermi surface does not reach the Brillouin zone boundary by a high planar electron density exceeding $10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. The simple single-band quasi-2D electronic structure results in strongly anisotropic transport properties and limits the effectiveness of electron-phonon scattering. Measurements on single crystals in the temperature range from 10-300K show that the thermal conductivity is much more weakly anisotropic than the electrical resistivity, as a result of significant phonon heat transport. The in-plane thermoelectric power is linear in temperature at 300\,K and displays a purity-dependent peak around 50K. Given the extreme simplicity of the band-structure, it is possible to identify this peak with phonon drag driven by normal electron-phonon scattering processes.

Mg substitution in CuCrO2 delafossite compounds

A detailed investigation of the series CuCr(1-x)MgxO2 (x = 0.0 - 0.05) has been performed by making high-temperature resistivity and thermopower measurements, and by performing a theoretical analysis of the latter. Microstructure characterization has been carried out as well. Upon Mg2+ for Cr3+ substitution, a concomitant decrease in the electrical resistivity and thermopower values is found, up to x ~ 0.02 - 0.03, indicating a low solubility limit of Mg in the structure. This result is corroborated by scanning electron microscopy observations, showing the presence of MgCr2O4 spinels as soon as x = 0.005. The thermopower is discussed in the temperature-independent correlation functions ratio approximation as based on the Kubo formalism, and the dependence of the effective charge carrier density on the nominal Mg substitution rate is addressed. This leads to a solubility limit of 1.1% Mg in the delafossite, confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis.

Magneto-elastic coupling and unconventional magnetic ordering in triangular multiferroic AgCrS2

The temperature evolution of the crystal and magnetic structures of ferroelectric sulfide AgCrS2 have been investigated by means of neutron scattering. AgCrS2 undergoes at TN = 41.6 K a first-order phase transition, from a paramagnetic rhombohedral R3m to an antiferromagnetic monoclinic structure with a polar Cm space group. In addition to being ferroelectric below TN, the low temperature phase of AgCrS2 exhibits an unconventional collinear magnetic structure that can be described as double ferromagnetic stripes coupled antiferromagnetically, with the magnetic moment of Cr+3 oriented along b within the anisotropic triangular plane. The magnetic couplings stabilizing this structure are discussed using inelastic neutron scattering results. Ferroelectricity below TN in AgCrS2 can possibly be explained in terms of atomic displacements at the magneto-elastic induced structural distortion. These results contrast with the behavior of the parent frustrated antiferromagnet and spin-driven ferroelectric AgCrO2.

On the strong impact of doping in the triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2

Electronic band structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method have been performed for CuCrO2. For this antiferromagnetic (T_N = 24 K) semiconductor crystallizing in the delafossite structure, it is found that the valence band maximum is mainly due to the t_2g orbitals of Cr^3+ and that spin polarization is predicted with 3 mu_B per Cr^3+. The structural characterizations of CuCr1-xMgxO2 reveal a very limited range of Mg^2+ substitution for Cr^3+ in this series. As soon as x = 0.02, a maximum of 1% Cr ions substituted by Mg site is measured in the sample. This result is also consistent with the detection of Mg spinel impurities from X-ray diffraction for x = 0.01. This explains the saturation of the Mg^2+ effect upon the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power observed for x > 0.01. Such a very weak solubility limit could also be responsible for the discrepancies found in the literature. Furthermore, the measurements made under magnetic field (magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient) support that the Cr^4+ "holes", created by the Mg^2+ substitution, in the matrix of high spin Cr^3+ (S = 3/2) are responsible for the transport properties of these compounds.

Electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of CuRh(1-x)MgxO2

Electronic structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method have been performed for CuRhO2. For this semiconductor crystallizing in the delafossite structure, it is found that the valence band maximum is mainly due to the 4d t2g orbitals of Rh^{3+}. The structural characterizations of CuRh(1-x)MgxO2 show a broad range of Mg^{2+} substitution for Rh^{3+} in this series, up to about 12%. Measurements of the resistivity and thermopower of the doped systems show a Fermi liquid-like behavior for temperatures up to about 1000K, resulting in a large weakly temperature dependent power factor. The thermopower is discussed both within the Boltzmann equation approach as based on the electronic structure calculations and the temperature independent correlation functions ratio approximation as based on the Kubo formalism.

Zig-zag ladders with staggered magnetic chirality in S = 3/2 compound beta-CaCr2O4

The crystal and magnetic structures of the S = 3/2 chain antiferromagnet beta-CaCr2O4 have been investigated by means of specific heat, magnetization, muon relaxation and neutron powder diffraction between 300K and 1.5K. Owing to the original topology of the Cr3+ magnetic lattice, which can be described as a network of triangular ladders, equivalent to chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbors interactions, evolution of the magnetic scattering intensity in this compound evidences two magnetic regimes : for 21K < T < 270K, a low-dimensionality magnetic ordering of the Cr3+ spins is observed, simultaneously with a strong contraction of the ladder legs, parallel to c. Below TN = 21K, a complex antiferromagnetic ordering is evidenced, with an incommensurate propagation vector k = (0, 0, q) (q ~ 0.477 at 1.5K), as exchange interactions between ladders become significant. This complex magnetic ordering can be described as a honeycomb-like arrangement of cycloids, running along c, with staggered chiralities. The experimental observation of this staggered chirality can be understood by taking into account antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange terms.

Magnetic field induced ferroelectric loop in Bi0.75Sr0.25FeO3

Magnetic field induced ferroelectric hysteresis loop observed in Bi0.75Sr0.25FeO3-delta is of prime importance. The coexistence of antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism is responsible for the original magnetoelastic and magnetoferroelectric properties. Upon external magnetic field application, the existence of a magnetostrictive effect supports a structural transition towards a homogeneous antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase. The magnetic field induced polarization is among the highest reported for BiFeO3 based systems in either thin film or bulk forms (Pr=96 microC/cm2 at 10T) while the ferroelectric coercive field is among the lowest reported (Hc=661(V/cm) at 10T). These properties make this material very attractive for technical applications.

Magnetodielectric coupling in a triangular Ising lattice

Dielectric constant measurement under magnetic field is an efficient technique to study the coupling between charges and spins in insulating materials. For magnetic oxides, the geometric frustration is known to be a key ingredient to observe such a coupling. Measurements for the triangular Ising-like cobaltite Ca3Co2O6 have been made. Single crystals of Ca3Co2O6 are found to exhibit a magnetodielectric effect below TN=25K with a peak in the e(H) curve at the ferri to ferromagnetic transition. This relation between e and magnetization has been modelized by using two order parameters in an energy expansion derived from the Landau formalism and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. This result emphasizes the great potential of insulating transition metal oxides for the search of magnetodielectric effect.
