Local min-max surfaces and strongly irreducible minimal Heegaard splittings

Let $(M,g)$ be a closed oriented Riemannian $3$-manifold and suppose that there is a strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting $H$. We prove that $H$ is either isotopic to a minimal surface of index at most one or isotopic to the stable oriented double cover of a non-orientable minimal surface with a vertical handle attached. In particular, this proves a result conjectured by Rubinstein. Some consequences include the existence in any $\mathbb{R}P^3$ of either a minimal torus or a minimal projective plane with stable universal cover. In the case of positive scalar curvature, it is shown for spherical space forms not diffeomorphic to $S^3$ or $\mathbb{R}P^3$ that any strongly irreducible Heegaard splitting admits a minimal representative in its isotopy class, and that there is a minimal Heegaard splitting of area less than $4π$ if $R\geq 6$.

Equidistribution of minimal hypersurfaces for generic metrics

For almost all Riemannian metrics (in the $C^\infty$ Baire sense) on a closed manifold $M^{n+1}$, $3\leq (n+1)\leq 7$, we prove that there is a sequence of closed, smooth, embedded, connected minimal hypersurfaces that is equidistributed in $M$. This gives a quantitative version of the main result of \cite{irie-marques-neves}, by Irie and the first two authors, that established denseness of minimal hypersurfaces for generic metrics. As in \cite{irie-marques-neves}, the main tool is the Weyl Law for the Volume Spectrum proven by Liokumovich and the first two authors in \cite{liokumovich-marques-neves}.

Appearance of stable minimal spheres along the Ricci flow in positive scalar curvature

We construct examples of spherical space forms $(S^3/Γ,g)$ with positive scalar curvature and containing no stable embedded minimal surfaces, such that the following happens along the Ricci flow starting at $(S^3/Γ,g)$: a stable embedded minimal two-sphere appears and a non-trivial singularity occurs. We also give in dimension $3$ a general contruction of Type I neckpinching and clarify the relationship between stable spheres and non-trivial Type I singularities of the Ricci flow. Some symmetry assumptions prevent the appearance of stable spheres, and this has consequences on the types of singularities which can occur for metrics with these symmetries.

Embeddedness of least area minimal hypersurfaces

E. Calabi and J. Cao showed that a closed geodesic of least length in a two-sphere with nonnegative curvature is always simple. Using min-max theory, we prove that for some higher dimensions, this result holds without assumptions on the curvature. More precisely, in a closed $(n+1)$-manifold with $2 \leq n \leq 6$, a least area closed minimal hypersurface exists and any such hypersurface is embedded. As an application, we give a short proof of the fact that if a closed three-manifold $M$ has scalar curvature at least $6$ and is not isometric to the round three-sphere, then $M$ contains an embedded closed minimal surface of area less than $4π$. This confirms a conjecture of F. C. Marques and A. Neves.

A maximum principle for self-shrinkers and some consequences

Using a maximum principle for self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow, we give new proofs of a rigidity theorem for rotationally symmetric compact self-shrinkers and a result about the asymptotic behavior of self-shrinkers. This comparison argument also implies a linear bound for the second fundamental form of self-shrinking surfaces under natural assumptions. As a consequence, translating solitons can be related to these self-shrinkers.
